<h1>Data Science Is the Future of Everything</h1>
<h2>Predictive Modeling and Analytics with R</h2>
Join us for our Predictive Modeling and Analytics workshop on Saturday, November 10th, 2018; featuring Martin Jetton, with 30+ years of advanced supply chain analytics, predictive analytics, and statistical consulting experience. In his previous role, he was the Senior Predictive Consultant at Corios; where he developed predictive models and scorecards, forecast trends, identify uncertainties, and assign the ideal strategies to maximize performance.
The world has now turned into a digital workspace. Online activity and real-world sensors are generating torrents of data about everything from weather to crime to our buying habits. Increasing computer power and new analytical techniques promise to turn masses of raw data into actionable intelligence—and thereby transform a variety of industries and propel us to a data-driven economy. According to analysts, the Data Analytics market will be almost $50B by 2020. Coupled with the estimation that by 2019 there will nearly 1.2 million open data jobs with no one to fill them*, it is clear that understanding and communicating with data will be critical for impact. The skills needed to be a Business Analyst, Data Analyst, or Data Scientist are all about to be in real demand, and our trainings with experience Data Science Practitioners will help you get head start! (*International Data Corporation).
<h1>HOW COMPANIES ARE USING R?</h1>
Facebook - For behavior analysis related to status updates and profile pictures.
Google - For advertising effectiveness and economic forecasting.
Twitter - For data visualization and semantic clustering
Microsoft - Acquired Revolution R company and use it for a variety of purposes.
Xbox uses R for a great gaming experience.
Uber - For statistical analysis
Airbnb - Scale data science.
IBM - To help create IBM Watson, an open, cognitive computing technology platform that represents a new era in computing where systems understand the world like humans do: through senses, learning, and experience.
This course will introduce you to some of the most widely used predictive modeling techniques and their core principles. By taking this course, you will form a solid foundation of predictive analytics, which refers to tools and techniques for building statistical or machine learning models to make predictions based on data. You will learn how to carry out exploratory data analysis to gain insights and prepare data for predictive modeling, an essential skill valued in the business.
<h1>WHY R PROGRAMMING FOR PREDICTIVE ANALYTICS?</h1>
R is a programming language originally written for statisticians to do statistical analysis, including predictive analytics. It’s open-source software, used extensively in academia to teach such disciplines as statistics, bioinformatics, and economics. From its humble beginnings, it has since been extended to do data modeling, data mining, and predictive analysis.
<h1>ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR</h1>
Martin Jetton has 30+ years of advanced supply chain analytics, predictive analytics, and statistical consulting experience. He's currently a Principal at the Liberty Advisor Group, where he works in advanced supply chain analytics. In his previous role, he was the Senior Predictive Consultant at Corios; where he developed predictive models and scorecards, forecast trends, identify uncertainties, and assign the ideal strategies to maximize performance. The firm’s clients are in the banking, brokerage, credit, utilities and healthcare industries.
<h1>SOLD OUT?</h1>
This is one of our high demand classes. In the case, we sale out; email us at ibeafoundation@gmail.com and ask when our next course will be in. |

Alchemy's 2018FreeCodeCamp.org JAMStack Hackathon PDX Edition!
Roll back
description |
nil |
→ |
Free Code Camp is hosting a JAMStack Hackathon in San Fransisco, and we can participate together in Portland! It's a two-day event on Saturday & Sunday, November 3 & 4 from 9AM to 9PM.
Come hang out and participate in the online version of the hackathon in person with teams we'll help you build in downtown Portland at Alchemy Code Lab! ACL lead instructor, mJordan, and Free Code Camp Portland Organizers / awesome developers, Brigette, Kenny, and Daniel will be ready to hack and help. Jason from Gatsby will also be popping in to help and provide some swag!
The online hackathon teams will compete for their own set of prizes. They can interact with the judges, mentors, and other hackathon teams through the chat room and the live stream of the event on the freeCodeCamp YouTube channel.
HOW TO SIGN UP (4 Steps to Officially Participate):
1. RSVP to our MeetUp
2. Check out the official event page: https://hackathon.freecodecamp.org/
3. Build and deploy a JAMStack app by following the included instructions. If you need help, feel free to reach out to mjordan@alchemycodelab.com or join the Free Code Camp Portland slack group [http://bit.ly/freecodecamppdx] and reach out!
4. Once your hello world app is live, apply for a free online ticket here: https://freecodecamp.typeform.com/to/v4mc19
*You can still participate without signing up for the online hackathon ticket, but you won’t be eligible for the official prizes.
SHOULD YOU SIGN UP?
YES! Any skill level should feel welcome to come hang out and learn! Hackathons are a great way to meet new people and learn new skills. Some experience with HTML/CSS/JavaScript would be helpful, but there are always plenty of ways for people to contribute even if you don’t know any code coming in.
EVENT DETAILS:
The main hackathon is from 9am to 9pm on both Saturday and Sunday. The space here will be available for the same hours.
Food carts are just a few blocks away when you need a midday break, and there will be some food provided...stay tuned!
WAIT, WAIT…. WHAT ACTUALLY IS THE JAMStack?
The JAMstack is a simple way of building web apps. JAM stands for JavaScript, APIs, and Markup (HTML and CSS).
If you've built some of the projects in the freeCodeCamp curriculum, you've already been using the JAMstack.
The main difference between the JAMstack and other web development stacks like LAMP and MEAN is this: instead of using a web server back end, you use APIs. |

We'll meet in the Ecotrust Alder Room. Enter the atrium of the Ecotrust building from either side. Feel free to bring food and/or beer up with you from Hot Lips or Laughing Planet! Walk up the inside stairs along the East Wall or take the elevator to the second floor. The Alder Room entrance is right behind the Ecotrust front desk. We'll have the gate open for at least the first part of the meeting. If it's not open, call Tanya at 503-475-7833 or just yell through the gate at us :-) |

This month Chuck Jewell from Sightbox will be sharing how Sightbox is solving legacy app and database transitions using the strangler pattern and GraphQL.
*Legacy app strangulation with GraphQL on AWS AppSync*
Database concepts like linearizability and serializability sound abstract, but they can have real-world consequences. Chris Fauna from Fauna DM will give us a look at consistency in the real world, and how flaws can impact your applications. We’ll take a tour of FaunaDB’s globally consistent transaction pipeline and compare it to the alternative approach taken by Google Spanner.
*Deterministic Global Database Consistency*

In addition to our usual networking format, a representative from Salesforce will tell us about the company and share available opportunities. Charlotte Chipperfield, the founder and CEO of Chipperfield Media, will share the top do’s and “don’ts” of social media and how to leverage social for building either a business or personal brand.
Agenda:
5:00 p.m. - Doors open/networking
5:45 p.m. - Introduction
6:00 p.m. - Speaking segments begin
6:30 p.m. - Networking
7:00 p.m. - Event ends
Event FAQ:
Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms?
A: Yes
Q: Is the space ADA accessible?

Q: Is there secured bike parking?
A: We have some space for bikes inside the building, and racks outside but riders will need to bring locks for those racks.

A: Not necessarily, we are out in the burbs and have plenty of parking. There is, however a max stop (Orenco station, Blue Line) about a 10min walk away.
Q: Can I bring my dog?
A: No, we ask that you leave your furry friend home. Please note there may be office pets present at this event.
Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome. |

AgilePDX: Lean Coffee in the North
Roll back
description |
nil |
→ |
Join us for coffee/tea or beverage of your choice and fun discussions about how to overcome challenges we face or to share about Agile-inspired and other topics we agree or disagree with. This event is aimed at getting people in the North and NE areas of Portland together to facilitate discussions. It's not exclusive to people that live in the North and NE, just closer to those parts of the city to make it easier to come out. (If you want something other than tea or coffee, you'll have to bring it with you. We'll have hot water and cups available.)
**Percipio Consulting Group is opening up their offices to host this event.**
Percipio is a business consulting firm that helps companies identify opportunities for improvement and successfully implement meaningful changes. That means more efficient processes, shored-up controls, a technology solution that really works for you, or all of the above. They have helped many companies, both Fortune 500 and mid-sized, navigate complex projects by truly understanding business needs and defining up front what success will look like.
**Parking:** Use the Gotham Building Parking lot on the corner of N Page St and N Borthwick Ave.
**Building Entry:** Entry to the building is best through the door by Little Gotham Coffee. We'll have someone meeting on time attendees at the door. For those that run a few minutes late due to traffic or other reasons out of your control, there will be directions at the door on how to contact someone to let you in.
We'll spend the first few minutes gathering discussion ideas, then roll right into the smooth easy cadence of the lively chatter.
##**New to Lean Coffee?**
It's a great way to have real, focused dialogue and we often discuss matters of agile, lean and such - but anything goes. As far as the mechanics, here's the format we'll follow:
**Step 1:** Everybody writes down proposed topics on stickies, placing them in the center of the table. Take as much time as needed, but typically takes only 3-5 minutes (or whenever coffee is ready).
**Step 2:** Each topic is briefly described by its writer to get a flavor for the subject (15-30 seconds typically per sticky).
**Step 3:** Each person gets five votes which they indicate by marking the voted-for sticky with their Sharpie. Mark with a plus + if you agree with the topic and want to discuss it, or a minus - if you disagree and want to discuss it, mark it with a dot if you want to hear the discussion and maybe join in. You can put all votes on one, one across many, however you feel. Each mark counts as one vote.
**Step 4:** The top vote-getting stickies are placed in the ToDo column, ordered by the stickies with the most votes at the top. In an Agile fashion, we'll use groupings of ToDo, Doing, Done and Lessons learned.
**Step 5:** Each of these stickies are discussed for 5 minutes, most votes first. The facilitator takes a quick "Cesar" (thumbs up/down) vote at the five-minute timer, and she moves on for three more minutes if the discussion still has majority interest. When complete, move the sticky over to the Done column. Rinse and repeat.
**Step 6:** wrap-up thoughts at the end - what one idea or person did you most enjoy, then break for home/drinks/cover. |

"At regular intervals, the team reflects on how to become more effective, then tunes and adjusts its behavior accordingly"
Great! We can get a lot of juice and improvement tuning and adjusting our behavior within the team. And then....
- We get pressure to share our results outside of the team and as soon as we do the team clams up.
- We hit an impediment that is in the soup - outside of our ability to address within the team.
- We start to see patterns across teams.
**Whether you are a master at organizational change or just starting out, join us in what's bound to be a lively discussion. We'll all walk away with something new to try.** |
