create Calagator::Event 1250475204 Hackboat (Hackers on a Boat!) Roll back

description nil FAQ: WTF is an unconference? There will be talks, but no formal CFP. Registrants will be asked for potential speaking topics, and we will likely set up some voting mechanism closer to the event to decide which speaking topics will get time on the mic. Does this cost money? Yes, $100 for a regular ticket, and premium tickets up to $500. Will there be a free hat? Yes, free hat! (for paying attendees only) What hours will the boat be cruising? Time on the water has not been 100% finalized, but will likely be around 11am-3pm, with a couple hours docked on both ends where you can hang out on the boat. How do I get on the boat? The boat will be docked by the Salmon Street Springs fountain on the Portland waterfront. Food? Lunch buffet provided. Drinks? There will be a bar. Internet? There will be internet, but it will be boat internet. Is this an infinitely sized boat? No, there will a limit of 100 people on this boat. How much money are you making from this? Ticket costs are structured to just *almost* cover costs. No one is making money from any of this. Can I register with my 31337 h4x0r alias? Sorry, due to strict boat law, your legal name will need to match the boat manifest. Are you sure this is a good idea? Too late to back out now. We have the boat, so it's happening either way. This FAQ is boring, is there a better one I can read? The official boat FAQ can be found here: https://www.portlandspirit.com/faq.php

create Calagator::Event 1250475201 PASCAL Hackerspace - Tools That Pwn: A Hacker Symposium Roll back

description nil <p>This Saturday at PASCAL we are offering a Hacker Symposium of sorts, featuring a few handy tools of the trade as well as two major frameworks often used in developing exploits and attacking systems or networks. We will be surveying several of the tools that are part of Kali, and easy to install on any Debian derived distro. It seems many folks, sometimes even the professionals already hip deep in the field of tech, are unaware of the power their packages wield! The wild hacker kidz at PASCAL are going to show you how to get started with packaged/pre-loaded tools like Burp Suite, Binwalk, Wireshark, Kismet and will also provide you with an overview of the Metasploit and Volatility frameworks. Come take your first step with Reverse Engineering at PASCAL using Binwalk! Excuse yourself and set up a proxy with Burp Suite! Breath deep and sniff packets with Kismet! Enjoy these puns and more, in person with Cylon and the rest of the misfit hackers of PDX!</p> <p>We will set aside time to answer questions, and hold demonstrations of each utility discussed. This is all about what YOU want to learn!! Questions? please email Cylon--> [masked]. PASCAL also has a Discord server as means of communication regarding upcoming events, news in infosec and memes (inquire within).<br>If you RSVP and are no longer able to make it, please do take the time to change your RSVP so that someone else may attend, even if it is only an hour before! Thanks!</p>

create Calagator::Event 1250475200 PDXPUG: March Meetup: Let’s talk databases in python! Roll back

description nil Speaker: Hannah Stepanek Let’s talk databases in python! What’s an ORM? Is there a way to write database queries so that they are compatible with multiple types of databases? How do you make database changes (such as adding a new table or a new column) safely? What is a connection pool and why is it useful? What are some things that can go wrong when operating at scale? In this talk we’ll take a deep dive into how the python libraries sqlalchemy and alembic make managing production databases simple, efficient, and painless so you can get back to feature development. Hannah has been working in industry for over 6 years as a python software engineer. She currently works at Hypothesis, a web application for annotating web pages and pdfs. In her spare time she enjoys riding her horse Sophie and playing board games.

create Calagator::Event 1250475199 Nike Tech Talks Roll back

description nil Join Beth Long, DevOps Solutions Strategist at New Relic, at the Nike Tech Talks on March 14. Beth will give a talk titled, Brains, Bytes & Blowups: How Humans Learn to Keep Complex Systems Alive. Enjoy snacks and beverages, as you network with fellow tech enthusiasts before and after the talk. Abstract: As software systems become more complex, we look for strategies to move faster and produce more reliable systems. Yet the price of success is new and more challenging failures. If failure is inevitable, how do we cope? How do we learn from incidents and other types of failure? And how do our ways of collaborating shape the systems we create? Bio: Beth Long is a software engineer who sneaked into a solutions strategist role at New Relic. Many years ago, she abandoned a potential career as a rocket scientist to tinker with websites. She has written, tested, broken, rescued, and taught code. She's the project lead for New Relic's collaboration with the SNAFUcatchers research project, investigating how tech companies cope with complexity and learn from incidents, a project which has caused her to randomly point and declare, "joint cognitive system!"

update Calagator::Event 1250475197 The Perpetual Lineup Roll back

description ** Note: This meeting will start at 7:00 PM, NOT at our usual time. Doors will be monitored for access until 7:20 PM. If you arrive later, please post a note to the meeting page on Meetup, and we'll work to respond and let you in. ** Join us for a combined meeting with Seattle TA3M! Details about the meeting location and parking are listed at the end. You are probably in a criminal face recognition network. Did you know that half of US adults are in a face-recognition database? If you live in Oregon or Washington state, your face data is stored in your state's driver license database. Both states use facial recognition software to prevent driver license fraud and neither currently shares their databases with law enforcement. But what if that changes? Facial recognition can be useful for some things, like unlocking our phones, but companies and governments can also use the technology for their own purposes — without our consent. While the technology has made great advances in accuracy, many programs still have difficulty with darker faces, women, and children. And a number of questions still exist in other areas including privacy, consent, discrimination, and whether the technology will be used for general, suspicionless surveillance. Clare Garvie and her colleagues at Georgetown Law's Center on Privacy and Technology did a year-long investigation on police use of facial recognition, and the result of their research is a paper called "The Perpetual Line-Up: Unregulated Police Face Recognition in America" (https://www.perpetuallineup.org/). She'll share insights from the study and tell us how the information has already been put to use in shaping policy for the use of facial recognition technology by government. She'll be speaking to both groups, Seattle TA3M and us, via teleconference. Join us for a great presentation and discussion about facial recognition! We'll have snacks, and there will be an opportunity for networking afterwards. We hope to see you there! Schedule: 6:55 PM: Doors 7:00 PM: Introductions 7:10 PM: Presentation Speaker bio: Clare Garvie joined the Center on Privacy and Technology as a Law Fellow after graduating from Georgetown Law in 2015, and now serves as a Senior Associate. Sometimes, they've even been told that "programming is hard to learn."</p> <p>At The Tech Academy, we work hard to break down the barriers between people and technology. We think that, with the right approach, anyone can learn to code - and whether you end up working in technology or not, the principles behind coding are useful in a lot of areas.</p> <p>The Tech Academy is offering a free course on Introduction to JavaScript. JavaScript is universally recognized as a foundational language. It is present in every platform imaginable: like browsers, mobile, and desktop applications.</p> <p>This course is perfect for people with little to no experience in programming who are curious about a career in software development.</p> <p>In this practical, hands-on class, you'll learn the basics of these popular technologies - and along the way, you should find out for yourself whether technology and coding are something worth looking into a bit more deeply.</p> <p>Please Note:<br>---Make sure to bring your laptop, as this will be a hands on learning process where you get to actually write your own code. If you don't have a laptop, no worries, you will be able to use one of ours.<br>---An RSVP is needed to guarantee a seat in the class, though we may have a few open seats for last minute attendees.</p>
