description nil Join us for May Happy Hour at Vacasa! PDXWIT is looking forward to seeing you at Vacasa for our next happy hour! The theme for this month is Accessibility in Technology. The conversation starters to keep the networking flowing will be “How can tech be more accessible?” and “What does an accessible tech environment mean to you?” While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase some individuals in our community. An employee of Vacasa will provide an introduction to the company and share open job opportunities. Ilana Davis, Creative Director at Ilana Davis LLC, will do a lightning talk titled, “Designing for Inclusion.” Tasha Zuniga, Full Stack Javascript Developer, will talk about fonts and how to make them accessible. During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking: An Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director. Table Topics to help break the ice. A section for job seekers and our sponsors who are hiring, to ensure people get connected. Agenda: 4:30 p.m. - Doors open 5:30 p.m. - Introductions, announcements + speaking segments 6:30 p.m. - Event ends Event FAQ Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms? A: No Q: Should I consider using public transportation? A: 2 hour parking is typically available in the neighborhood in the afternoon. Paid parking ends at 7pm. Q: Can I bring my dog? Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. description Come join us for Pythonic talks! This month: * Why use Python Type Hints? - by Neil Pilgrim Python already has types - what are these newfangled hints you speak of? Are they trying to turn my lovely Python into an overly-verbose strict language like Java or C++? Let's explore what these new(ish) aspects of the language look like, and what benefits they can bring - if you want to use them! * Lessons Learned During Advent of Code 2018 by Chris Freeman Advent of Code (https://adventofcode.com) is an Advent calendar of small programming puzzles. All AoC puzzles have a solution "that complete in at most 15 seconds on ten-year-old hardware". In this talk, Chris will cover strategies and lessons learning during the 2018 AoC to reach this goal using Python. About our speakers: Neil Pilgrim built up his development skills writing scientific physics simulations in C++, but now mainly develops in Python as his language of choice. In the last year or two he has become increasingly engaged with the Open Source Zulip team-chat community after sprinting with them at PyCon 2017, which opened his eyes to the wonder and challenges that Type Hints bring to Python! Chris Freeman is a freelance computer engineer and software developer. In his spare time, he can be found answering Python questions on the Treehouse Community forum. Join us afterward upstairs at Bailey's Upper Lip (213 SW Broadway) to continue our snaky discussions over a beverage. Do you have something you'd like to share? Email us ([email protected]). description nil The study of quantum computation has been motivated, in part, by the possibility that quantum computers can perform certain tasks dramatically faster than classical computers. Many of the known quantum-over-classical speedups, such as Shor’s algorithm for factoring integers and Grover’s search algorithm, can be framed as oracle problems or concept learning problems. In one model of concept learning, a student wishes to learn a concept from a teacher by making queries of the teacher. In the interest of efficiency, the student wishes to learn the concept by making as few queries as possible. For any such concept learning problem, there is a corresponding quantum concept learning problem. In the quantum version, the student is allowed to ask a superposition of queries – mathematically, a linear combination of queries – and the teacher answers with the corresponding superposition of the responses. After making this idea precise, we will examine several concept learning problems and their quantum analogues. We will discuss recent joint work with Daniel Copeland (UCSD), in which we show how tools from representation theory can be used to precisely analyze any quantum learning problem with sufficient symmetry. Will also be streamed live on the Galois YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1TJ20iM_dCa0pq6h0tA79w

description nil Portland Linux/Unix Group General Meeting Who: Heather Wilcox<br> What: Software Quality Engineering<br> Where: PSU, 1930 SW 4th Ave. Room FAB 86-01 (Lower Level)<br> When: Thursday, April 4th, 2019 at 7pm<br> Why: The pursuit of technology freedom<br> Stream: http://pdxlinux.org/live There is no magic bullet for quality. Nor is there a right tool, script, or any amount of automation that can replace actual thought and effort. Building quality in requires that you first understand what it is. This talk will focus first on defining quality, then we will move to strategies for building the goodness in, and finally ways to test to ensure that both you and your "customers" are getting what they want. About Heather Heather Wilcox has spent 24 years working and learning in the software industry, choosing to focus primarily on start-up and small companies. As a result, she has had a broad range of job descriptions which include, but are not limited to: Tech Support Engineer, IS Manager, Technical Writer, QA Engineer, QA Manager, and Configuration Management Engineer. This has given Heather a wide range of experiences to draw from in her current roles as a Senior Quality Assurance engineer and Scrum Master. Many will head to the Lucky Lab at 1945 NW Quimby St. after the meeting. Rideshares to the Lucky Lab available PLUG is open to everyone and does not tolerate abusive behavior on its mailing lists or at its meetings.

update Calagator::Event 1250475350 AgilePDX User Group - Portland Metro - Virtual Pub Lunch: Agile Transformations Roll back

description <p>Missing out on roundtable discussions due to location? Try out this virtual gathering.</p> <p>The topic this month is: Agile Transformation<br>What do we think of, when we hear these words? Do we view it as promises of high performing teams and great business success? Or, maybe the transform reaches the entire company, moving the change process from team to leadership, company culture, and customer relationships. And while the 'Manifesto for Agile Software Development' was written by software developers, we can distill its statement to all professions: "We are uncovering better ways of X by doing it and helping others do it." Is this the core of an agile transformation?</p> <p>What are your thoughts? What have you experienced, good or bad? Please join us and share your story and ask questions of others. There are no sages on stages in this discussion, and your contribution will make our discussion richer. This is us, sharing our experiences, and helping each other build on it.</p> <p>Connect with us via Zoom!<br>Zoom Link: <a href="https://zoom.us/j/674417247" class="linkified">https://zoom.us/j/674417247</a></p> <p>Photo by Danielle MacInnes (@dsmacinnes) on Unsplash.</p> **

update Calagator::Event 1250475349 AgilePDX User Group - Portland Metro - Mob Programming Roll back

description <p>Join us for a hands-on workshop experiencing Mob Programming!<br>Mob Programming is a software development practice with many benefits - it raises code quality, removes knowledge silos, minimizes mental fatigue, and more. In practice it feels more like a bulldozer than a racecar - unstoppable and thorough.</p> <p>The core of mob programming is pointing many pairs of eyes on a single problem, pushing all the code through a single keyboard. Each month we'll explore different methods for learning to mob well and reaping the rewards of this practice as soon as possible on your own team.</p> <p>Directions: The building you are looking for is on 2nd and Taylor (look for the Starbucks on the ground floor). Take the escalators on the 2nd St. entrance to the WTC Building One second floor lobby (ADA access: ground floor elevator). Take an elevator to the 9th floor (press '9' outside the elevators and use the indicated cab). Follow signs to the Cayuse lobby and sign in for the event.</p> <p>Facilitator Bio:</p> <p>Jeff Patterson is a software quality engineer at Jama Software, language agnostic, quality evangelist, and non-traditional CS grad. He has facilitated Global Day of Code Retreat, founded a peer group to support Community College CS students transferring to University, and is often heard saying, "Software is made of people!"</p> **Please RSVP on our Meetup page to reserve your spot: ** https://www.meetup.com/AgilePDX-User-Group-Portland-Metro/events/260087586/ **If you are unable to attend, please update your RSVP to open your seat for another attendee.** <p>Join us for a hands-on workshop experiencing Mob Programming!<br>Mob Programming is a software development practice with many benefits - it raises code quality, removes knowledge silos, minimizes mental fatigue, and more.
