Portland Python User Group: Geohash, PostGIS, GeoDjango, etc
Roll back
| description |

Our first meeting of 2010 is nearly upon us and it's going to be a big one! The theme for January is: Geographic Information. In addition to 3 (count 'em: 3!) great feature presentations, there will be a giveaway of GIS and Python books. And, after, we'll adjourn to the pub for beer. (Map to be provided.)
First up we'll have Michel's Module of the Month, a lightning talk on a randomly chosen stdlib module by an unprepared volunteer.
Then, Michel Pelletier will introduce Geohash, a clever text encoding of latitude and longitude information that is very useful for non-traditional databases, among other things. Geohashing was cooked up by Gustavo Niemeyer of Mocker and Dateutil fame.
Webb Sprague will talk about how to incorporate geographic data into relational databases using PostGIS and PostgreSQL. He will cover making a connection with psycopg2, modeling using geographic data types, and associating geographic data with non-geographic attributes.
Building on Webb's talk, Tim Welch will introduce the geographic capabilities of the Django Framework (aka GeoDjango) which utilizes PostGIS and psycopg2. He'll briefly cover geometric data types, spatial operators, the Django geographic admin and creating geo-enabled web services. In addition to examples, at least one application will also be demoed. |

Portland Functional Programming Study Group
Roll back
| description |
<i>ABOUT: Join programmers, researchers and enthusiasts to discuss functional programming. pdxfunc is a study/user group exploring the world of functional programming based in Portland, Oregon. The group welcomes programmers interested in all functional languages, including Haskell, Erlang, OCaml, Scala, and others. The group meets regularly and provides presentations, demos and discussions applicable to all skill levels, from newbies and experts. The meetings are usually on the second Monday of the month.
VENUE: You can enter the event space through the glass doors on 7th that are close to the intersection with Clay, or through the front door and just look for signs to the event space. There will be signs on both.</i>
PRESENTATIONS
* "Serialist: Lazy web-crawling in Haskell" by Jamey Sharp and Josh Triplett
The http://serialist.net/ site provides a way to find, track and read serialized content (e.g., web comics). It's implemented entirely in Haskell and demonstrates functional web application development, crawling, scraping and distributed architecture. Serialist uses interesting graph algorithms to add and step through content lazily. Work on the site also produced useful, reusable Haskell modules: early-finish monad, HTTP Digest implementation, database layer, recursive monadic data structures, fast/lazy character converter, etc. Jamey and Josh will discuss these topics as well as their experiences analyzing and profiling their Haskell code to improve performance and reduce memory consumption.
- Jamey Sharp's day job involves a computer test for attention deficit disorder, but his biggest projects have been the Portland State Aerospace Society, XCB, and Serialist. Twitter: @jamey_sharp. Projects: http://www.ohloh.net/accounts/jamey
- Josh Triplett is a PhD student at Portland State University and a Free and Open Source Software hacker. He's involved in research on relativistic programming and advanced synchronization techniques for highly parallel systems. Josh builds and launches Linux-powered rockets with the Portland State Aerospace Society, and hacks on numerous other projects. Homepage with projects: http://joshtriplett.org/ |

Server Sky - Data Centers in Orbit
Roll back
| description |

→ |
Monthly meeting, Technology Radio Amateur Club
Server sky is a proposal to build large dispersed arrays of 7 gram paper-thin solar-powered computer satellites and launch them into 6400km earth orbit. Arrays act as large parallel computers, as well as sparse phased array antennas, transmitting thousands of communication beams simultaneously to ground receivers and other arrays in space.
Server-sat arrays use unlimited space solar power, and operate outside the biosphere. The environmental impact of power generation and heat disposal is tiny. Other surprising biological effects will need study. Earth can return to what it is good at – green and growing things – while space can be filled with gray and computing things. |

30 hour day 2
Roll back
| description |

The first 30 hour day--the livestreaming Web-based telethon we put together to raise money for charities in the Portland area--brought in around $7000 for Free Geek, the Oregon Food Bank, and Toys for Tots, a couple of barrels of food, and at least one overflowing barrel of toys. Not to mention generating 30 consecutive hours of entertainment from awesome local artists for more than 70,000 people who tuned in to watch.
Not bad for roughly six weeks from concept to completion.
Now, we're hard at work on 30 hour day 2. And it promises to be bigger and better than the first.
Mark your calendars! We'll see you on July 2, 2010. |

Launch Loop - PSU Physics Seminar
Roll back
| description |
The Launch Loop can launch thousands of tons per day to high orbit for dollars per kilogram.
It stores momentum and energy in a long (5600km) and narrow (5 cm) hypervelocity (14km/s) iron rotor. The Launch Loop is electrically powered and deployed from the ground, protected from space debris by the upper atmosphere, and can be built with existing engineering materials for a few gigadollars. Near term spinoffs will include power storage and transmission, permitting global peak usage leveling. |

January SAO Corvallis Tech Pub - A New Scale for Nuclear Power
Roll back
| description |
PROGRAM:
A New Scale for Nuclear Power
The Corvallis Chapter of the Software Association of Oregon begins 2010 with presentation from NuScale Power, a local nuclear technology start-up that leveraged technology transferred from Oregon State University to create a revolutionary model for modular nuclear reactors. Kent Welter, a Principal Engineer at NuScale, will give an overview of the technology and describe how NuScale has shaped the future nuclear energy.
The world needs clean, reliable ways to generate electricity. The United States is expected to need 300 gigawatts of new capacity â thatâs 150 times the capacity of Hoover Dam â by 2030. Developing nations can only grow as fast as they can power their economies. Global demand for new electric capacity will outpace the U.S. by tenfold in the same period.
Electric companies and government leaders are looking for ways to ensure their citizens have reliable, affordable supplies of electricity. They worry about the volatility of fossil fuel prices and the effects of green house gases.
NuScale Power is providing one of many answers to this problem. NuScale has developed a small nuclear power system that is safe, modular and scalable. The technology was borne of research by leading nuclear scientists with the support of the U.S. government. The design of the NuScale power plant builds on hundreds of combined years of operating experience with commercial light water reactors along with extensive research and laboratory testing of advanced safety systems.
Meeting future demand for electricity requires that we use what we have more efficiently. We must also look to new technologies using wind, solar and wave power and use proven technologies such as nuclear power to meet the needs of future generations.
Join us in for a night of networking and showcase with local technology leaders and entrepreneurs.
AGENDA:
5:30 - 6:15: Business Networking Time with finger food, no host bar
6:15 - 6:25: 30-Second Mic (give us your technology business elevator pitch!!)
6:45 Program: NuScale: A New Scale for Nuclear Power

RSVP TO: SAO by emailing sao-coordinator [AT] corvallis.sao.or.us or on the Willamette Innovators Network
