Come hang out, drink beer, and write code every Monday night.
The meetings are extremely informal, and everyone is welcome!
Maybe we'll be in the middle room, maybe in the back room, just keep walking until you see a table full of laptops.

Content Strategy Meetup - Book Club
Roll back
| description |
Our next Content Strategy Meetup up will be our first Quarterly Book Club and weâre reading Content Rules by Ann Handley and C.C. Chapman.
Weâll meet at 5:30 PM on Thursday, February 24th. This time weâll meet at Katherine Grayâs office for a more sit-down setting.
While we usually meet the third Thursday of the month, weâre going to push this meeting out to the fourth week to give people a little more time to finish the book.
And, speaking of that, even if you donât get to finish the book, come anyway! Weâll have a one-pager of the top points (from at least one personâs perspective) so you can join in. And if youâve ever been in a book club you know that the conversations often wander into areas not specifically covered by the book, though weâll do our best to stay on topic all the same.
If you donât yet have the book please consider buying it at Powellâs Bookstore. You may have heard that they, like most indie bookstores, are really feeling the cash pinch due to changes in the book industry and they laid off people yesterday. Powellâs even has the book available as an e-book through Google. |

See you there! |
→ |
Itâs time for another Portland Data Visualization Meetup! Weâll have three to four main presentations and networking time.
Webtrends will again graciously host us on their top floor. The venue is on the 16th floor of the building right next to Menâs Wearhouse. Hereâs a Google Maps streetview of the entrance of 851 SW 6th Ave # 1600, Portland, OR: http://goo.gl/maps/IDUY. For best results, please arrive before 6:30 Pm.
There should be a guard to let you in the door, but if you donât see anyone to let you in, call 765-314-1599 and someone will come downstairs to get you.
We usually have some conversation and networking, so feel free to bring business cards and/or let people know if youâre hiring. We wonât have a food or drink sponsor for this meeting, so feel free to bring your own snacks and things to eat! (if youâd like to sponsor, see the section at the end of this post).
---Special Guest---
Weâll have a special guest and science journalist from Germany visiting. Please make her feel welcome as sheâs come a long way visit! Sheâs very excited to meet all of you and see whatâs going on with data visualization here.
Speakers for Data Viz #5:
1. Nate Geier will demo a E-learning system he worked on.
2. Kevin Ward of NASAâs Earth Observatory will present a general overview of what he is working on there.
3. Kevin Lynagh will give a 10 minute talk on web-based visualizations and data-driven JavaScript applications.
4. Amber Case will present a short lecture on graph theory, with a process for visualizing Facebook groups.
5. Aaron Parecki and Amber Case may present new data from Geoloqi.com.
---Who Should Go?---
The event is open to everyone interested in or working in the field of data visualization. This means designers, programmers, information architects, data miners, anthropologists, ect. Weâre expecting a similar amount of people to last time (probably around 20-30 people).
---Location and Time---
Wednesday, February 23, 2011 from 6:30â8:30pm
Webtrends
851 SW 6th Ave.
Portland OR 97204
---Interested in Sponsoring?---
Weâre looking for food and drink sponsors for the next meeting, and if you know someone who might be a good sponsor feel free to contact me at [email protected]!
---Google Group:---
Address: http://groups.google.com/group/pdx-visualization.
Ed Borasky started a Google group called pdx-visualization. As the name implies, it is a group for Portland-area people interested in languages and techniques for visualization of data.
---Innovation in Data Visualization Group on Flickr:---
Address: http://www.flickr.com/groups/innovation-dataviz/
Iâve been collecting interesting data viz photos for a while now and posting them to Flickr Most pictures contain descriptions and links to the viz sources. If you have any Flickr photos of data viz work youâve done, or work your find innovative, be sure to add them to the group! |

An Open Source company landing $5million in venture funding from one of the nation's leading venture capital firms?
That's a story in itself. But when you realize it's a Portland firm - Puppet Labs, and that the investment was lead by Kleiner Perkins Caulfield, you will want to hear the story straight from the horse's mouth - CEO Luke Kanies of Puppet Labs, the makers of a leading open source data center automation and configuration management framework.
Joining him to talk about the opportunities and challenges of an open source start-up will be Stuart Cohen, CEO of CSI (Collaborative Software Initiative), a company that introduces a process for companies to collaboratively build software applications.
Open Source has typically been associated with altruism - software that is given away free and is open to modification by users. The concept became a household word when Portlander Linus Torvalds developed the Linux operating system. Now the list of Open Source and Free Software today includes cutting edge solutions to large scale problems in multiple domains. From languages to runtimes, cloud infrastructure to databases, the best solutions are open-sourced. Leading companies are building on top of open-source components, while giving back to the community. But open source is not just about being cost-effective,it is becoming the key to innovation.
How do open source start-ups thrive in this eco-system? Come and learn from the founders of two innovative start-ups!

Engineers Without Borders USA is a fast-growing national non-profit impacting developing communities around the world. EWB provides an opportunity for engineering students and professionals to use their skills to develop sustainable, appropriate technologies for specific applications, to help meet the basic needs of people. Our programs typically start with a focus on providing water and sanitation, but often move into other areas depending on the needs of the people. There is a role for everyone at EWB, from engineers to public health professionals. Rachel will give a background on EWB, our local chapter, and how to get involved. |
