create Calagator::Event 1250460572 PDXPUG Roll back

description nil Normally, Gabrielle ensures that we have thoughtful and informative presentations. Unfortunately for you, I -- Melissa -- am guest-hosting this month. What I'll come up with is anyone's guess, but BYOB is strongly recommended. Muahahaha. Oh, and we may also talk about Postgres or something. And we'll join those folks at the Lucky Lab afterwards.

create Calagator::Event 1250460564 Green Light Movie...The Sustainable Oroville Project www.facebook.com/greenlightmovie Roll back

description nil Open House A call to action for leaders and press. Being from the Pacific Northwest; you are considered a sustainability thought leader. You are cordially invited to our open house, a free solution based networking event. Are you looking to get something out of the time you spend at a networking event? Do you attend green networking events to meet new people, or to participate in a solution? Join the key Sustainable Oroville and Green Light Movie team for an engaging conversation. City leaders are saying YES to “green” through Sustainable Oroville – a civic initiative that already has attracted a canola crushing plant (which will produce canola oil and meal), as well as plans for the nation’s first sustainable, passive haus hotel. Since the launch of this initiative, Oroville is gaining attention from other clean-technology entrepreneurs and sustainability advocates who want to see it succeed. So what’s the big deal? Oroville isn’t waiting around for the world to change … instead, it’s taking steps to change the world. Oroville’s journey into sustainability will create a road map that other agriculture-dependent communities can adopt. Capturing this transformation in a documentary film creates a proof-of-concept that can be distributed worldwide. Through conversations with local leaders, business owners and residents, as well as sustainability movement leaders, we will show a grassroots effort creating change we NEED to see in the world. This is your opportunity to play a part in a "think globally, act locally" solution that is happening right now while being documented in the Green Light Movie, the Sustainable Oroville Project film. This is not your usual networking event. Stop by anytime between 3pm and 6pm. Stay as long as you like. Get one on one talking time with the thought leader visionaries. Listen to the vision, get questions answered, and see how YOU can intersect your experience, skills, and passion into this movement that is providing a solution to improve qualities of life in our very own Pacific Northwest communities. www.greenlightmovie.com www.sustainableoroville.com www.facebook.com/greenlightmovie Feel free to contact myself at kevin.pile@ecotrainmediagroup.com or 360-420-4594

description nil Green Light Movie…The Sustainable Oroville Open House A call to action for leaders and press. This is your opportunity to play a part in a "think globally, act locally" solution that is happening right now while being documented in the Green Light Movie, the Sustainable Oroville Project film. description nil ORGANIZATION AND REGISTRATION Presented by the Developer Forum of the Software Association of Oregon. Online registration is open through the website until 5pm on May 18. EVENT SUMMARY The sudden rise of smart phones interests organizations in extending their existing applications to work with mobile devices. The question immediately rises whether to develop native apps for the mobile platforms or to create a mobile-friendly web site. Both approaches have pros and cons, but some code frameworks make it easy to produce websites that look and feel close to a native app by making use of HTML5 and CSS3. Recently WebMD wanted to make a user’s Personal Health Record available in a mobile friendly manner. This talk will go over the key points which drove us to use the jQTouch framework over native apps, and it will go into technical detail showing how this framework allowed for a very fast and clean implementation. The event includes networking, program, and lunch. PRESENTER Jake Hall, Lead Developer, WebMD Jake Hall has worked in the software industry for 10 years. He has spent the last 6 years at WebMD Health Services Group and is currently Lead Developer and is has been providing leadership on the development team in moving to mobile applications.

description nil Presented by Chad Scherrer. Sampling from a large discrete distribution is a common problem in statistics. In this talk, we'll consider a real-world situation where the properties of the distribution cause common approaches to break down, and we'll arrive at a Haskell-based solution that fixes the problem.

update Calagator::Event 1250460559 Portland Java User Group: What's inside a JVM? Roll back

description This month's topic: What's inside a JVM? Are you interested in learning what a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) is and what it does for your Java applications? This presentation will provide insight into the inner workings of a Java Virtual Machine and some drill down on what compilers and garbage collectors do, so that you don't have to worry about it while programming your Java application. In particular, you will learn about common optimizations, well established garbage collection algorithms, and what the current biggest challenge with Java scalability is today. ---------- Speaker: Eva Andreasson Eva has been involved with Java virtual machine technologies, SOA, Cloud, and other enterprise middleware solutions for the past 10 years. Joined the startup Appeal Virtual Solutions in 2001, as a developer of JRockit JVM, which later was acquired by BEA Systems. Eva holds two patents on Garbage Collection heuristics and algorithms, and pioneered Deterministic Garbage Collection which later became productized through JRockit Real Time. Eva has worked closely with Sun and Intel on many technical partnerships, as well as various integration projects of JRockit Product Group, Weblogic, and Coherence (post the Oracle acquisition in 2008). Most recently Eva joined Azul Systems in 2009, as the Product Manager for the new Zing Java Platform. Eva holds a Master of Science from the Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, and a B.S with a Minor in Economics from the University of Stockholm. ---------- PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :) Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't *have* to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. Go ahead and just show up! Many people also go for a drink and further discussion following the meeting, at a location determined ad hoc (lately, Trees restaurant in the same building). http://twitter.com/pjug http://pjug.org/ (join our mailing list, linked from the website!) description nil WhereCampPDX is a free unconference focusing on all things geographical. This informal meeting of minds welcomes all geo-locative enthusiasts, anyone who asks “where am I” or feels the need to “know their place”. An unconference is a conference planned by the participants, we all convene together, plan sessions, and have break-outs into sessions. This gives everybody an opportunity to bring to the table the things that interest them the most and lets us talk about new topics that are still new and exploratory. Part of what is important to hearing new voices and getting new ideas is lowering barriers to participation – this event is free and it is driven by the participants.
