description nil This month's meeting will be a roundtable discussion about modern web serving. The CGI era gave way to LAMP and we're now onto the next generation: - node.js and NoSQL make LAMP overkill for many situations - AJAX/JavaScript are moving much application logic to the browser - Apache is giving way to lighttpd, node.js, nginx and others - We've gone from 9" Mac support to 1024 X 768 and now to 4" phones - Users now routinely block ads, scripting and Flash - Apple has declared war on Flash! - HTML 5 and CSS 3 are starting to appear in the wild - Security is finally coming first, not last How have these factors changed the way you serve web content? Are the fundamental problems being solved and making your job easier? Please share your experiences at this roundtable and bring your questions. When: Tuesday, September 20th, 7PM Where: Free Geek: 1731 SE 10th Avenue, not far from the Lucky Lab Food and Drink: Bring your own, consider Lucky Lab take-out

create Calagator::Event 1250461307 Portland Perl Mongers -- "Last of the 2nd Wednesdays" Social Roll back

description nil Note the (temporary) location change. This is possibly the last of the meetings on 2nd Wednesdays and a break from Free Geek while we figure out the keys/space issues. We'll be discussing all things Perl and generally socializing in or near some tasty beverages. If you are new, look for the pdx.pm t-shirts[1]. Feel free to bring a laptop if you have some code or Perl questions to share or work on. (Or if you have no laptop, just bring the code/url.) I would also like to hear your ideas and proposals for future meeting topics and presentations. The other meeting was last Thursday (Sept 8th), also at the Lucky Lab, where we began voting on whether to move the meeting to 2nd Thursdays. You get one vote for each time you show up (vote for both days or one twice.) Rumor has it that the classroom at Free Geek is being redone into rows of desks with a whiteboard and projector -- which makes 2nd Wednesdays more viable, though the meeting room might still be a better space for us. [1] My shirt is often purple. There was talk on irc.perl.org/#pdx.pm of getting a '$_' bat-signal to shine on the ceiling, but no volunteer yet.

description nil ADX, a new membership-based community workshop, will host its inaugural Fabrication Fest on Friday, September 16 - Sunday, September 18, 2011. From the design expert to the novice craftsperson, there's something for everyone in this exciting local version of the "maker faire." The weekend includes a dynamic exhibit featuring the work of ADX members of all experience levels and backgrounds who have brought their project concepts to life via the wide array of tools and resources within our facility. This diverse collection includes a giant boat, furniture, signage, craft projects, utilitarian items, musical instruments, and more! Join us for the opening reception from 6-11pm on Friday, September 16. Finished projects will be on display all night long during this free, all-ages public event – with beer provided by Widmer Brewery , sweet treats from Miss Zumstein, and curbside food cart service by Domo Dogs, Fifty Licks, and Hungry Heart Cupcakes. On Saturday, September 17 from 10am-4pm, ADX will offer an open house full of demonstrations, workshops, and creative energy. Our community partners will be offering up demos and special deals. Or, for the more industrious, our popular class "Women Welding: Bringing Metal to Life" will take place in the metal shop from 10a-2p (sign up here!). Saturday evening plays host to Fabrication Feast from 6:30-10pm. A collaboration with the Special Snowflake Supper Club, this one-in-a-lifetime dining experience will play host to a delicious meal in the style of a modern-day community barn raising. We’re talking entirely handmade: all tables, place settings, and seating has been constructed by ADX members. Click here to make your reservation! On Sunday, September 18 from 10am-2pm, we’re kickin’ back and enjoying the last days of summer with an open house and BBQ. Join us for a last look at the Fabrication Fest exhibit and to have all your project questions answered: we’ll have our team on hand for 1-on-1 assistance and free consultations to help bring your ideas from the first concepts into reality! Leave your intimidation at the door and let us help inspire you. update Calagator::Event 1250461302 PDMA Learning and Networking Event: The Role of Engineering and Marketing in a Lean Environment Roll back

description Creating a successful product in a lean environment requires more than the typical functional handoffs between engineering and marketing. Successful lean development requires collaboration, communication, and cooperation between engineering and marketing. Because of inherent difficulties of product development, adding pressures of limited time and limited staff can cause the opposite effects. Special strategies are needed for companies to be effective in a lean environment. The Oregon Chapter of the Product Development and Management Association (PDMA) invites you to its September Learning and Networking Event. At this event, experienced professionals will discuss their recommendations for lean product development, including discussions of processes, organizational structures, strategies, incentives, and staffing considerations. This is planned as an interactive event - the panelists will give short position statements at the start and the rest of the discussion will be based on Q&A from the audience and the moderator. A special thanks to the Oregon Technology Business Center (OTBC) for hosting this event. Panelists: John Geffel - Managing Partner at VALUE:driven Group Mark Peden - Senior Consultant at Broadband ERA Richard Coley - Lean Systems Implementer / Coach at CFS Consulting Group The Product Development and Management Association (PDMA) is the premier global advocate for product development and management professionals. description nil Creating a successful product in a lean environment requires more than the typical functional handoffs between engineering and marketing. Panelists: John Geffel - Managing Partner at VALUE:driven Group Mark Peden - Senior Consultant at Broadband ERA Richard Coley - Lean Systems Implementer / Coach at CFS Consulting Group
