We've been coding and thinking and designing and developing and writing and finally it's here: the very first version of our online activist calendar! Whether you are an event-goer, an event organizer, actively changing the world or change-curious, a politician, a non-profit, a techy type or lover of all things start-up: we invite you to celebrate with us! We've got a keg, so come help us kick it!
Doors open at 5:30 at "the SLATE" - NW 19th & Vaughn. 6pm presentation and website tour, followed by sign-up stations, munchies and music, and some chalk art brainstorming.
What? You wanted to hit the Mayoral Candidate debate that same night!? Never fear, it starts at 7 and is mere blocks (okay, maybe a full mile) away.
Peace, Pyrotechnics & Politics, (and documentaries, economics, and all those other intriguing things you find at Activate Hub.org!)
the Activate Hub.org team : ) |

Measuring the ROI of Your Marketing Efforts- From Traditional to Digital
Roll back

Social media is here to stay. Ask anyone in marketing — it’s becoming a bigger part of everyone’s department. No matter where any company is in their adoption timeline, they are all asking basic questions about metrics, ROI and long-term strategy.
Chris Murphy, Director of Brand Communications and Digital Marketing for adidas, has learned some valuable lessons about measurements and ROI through initiatives both successful, and less so. He will be discussing those lessons and how they’re informing future adidas efforts in the social space.
Plan now to attend this exciting Professional Development event! Dinner begins at 5:30 p.m. followed by the presentation from 6-7 p.m.
Chris Murphy, Head of Digital Marketing, adidas US
Chris has been with adidas for five years, starting in the eCommerce group as a consultant, moving into Digital Marketing where he led that team for three years, and now as the Director of Brand Communications and Digital Marketing. He has held both global and regional management positions while at adidas. Chris began his career in Digital Marketing in 1998 with a small .com start-up in Hood River, OR. In 2001, he began consulting online retailers and agencies on website development and online selling tools. In 2003, he returned to school at the University of Oregon to receive his MBA in Sports Business. Chris currently lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife, Hilary, daughter, Lydia, Labrador Retriever, Lily, and his bicycles.
Chris and his teams have received a number of industry awards, including being named a viral video finalist at the 2006 Cannes Festival, the 2007 Best Use of Mobile Marketing Cross-Media Integration award from the Mobile Marketing Association, the 2008 Overall Excellence Award from the Mobile Marketing Association, and a top 100 ranking by Vitrue as a most social brand in 2009 and 2010. During his time at the Head of Digital Marketing, adidas received more Facebook Case Studies than any other brand. Additionally, Chris has been a speaker at iMedia Brand Summit, ad:tech, the Mobile Marketing Association Forum, Mobile Future Forward, and is a founding co-chair of the Digital Collective. |

PDX-UX: JavaScript Web Apps
Roll back
| description |
"Avoiding the Spaghetti" by Henrik Joreteg
Clientside code doesn't have to be an ugly cluttered mess. Building clean, sane, maintainable client-side applications is indeed possible. We'll talk a bit about CommonJS on the client, properly abstracting a model layer, the DOM as a dumb view layer, sharing code between client/server and other techniques for avoiding insanity like automated static code analysis.
Henrik is a partner and lead JS developer at &yet (http://andyet.net), a boutique web software company in Richland, WA. He's a member of a growing group of javascript developers who are blazing the trail of realtime and single-page web application development and server-side javascript. Letâs put it this way: the dude cannot shut up about node.js, backbone, and socket.io.
He is the primary developer for &bang (http://andbang.com) and has written a slew of single-page real-time web apps using a number of technologies. He recently spoke at NodeConf and KRTConf and was a technical reviewer for O'Reilly's JavaScript Web Applications. He is the author of the popular open source javascript templating solution, iCanHaz.js and as an early adopter of Backbone.js wrote several definitive blogposts on the subject.

Roll back
| description |
About the Program:
Last fall Moodyâs lowered its economic outlook for 2012 citing political wrangling over the U.S. debt ceiling and debt crisis in Europe. Unemployment and underemployment continue to plague the economy and impact capital markets. Yet, some trends are turning positive. What is the outlook for 2012 how does it influence corporate spending and appetite for capital markets?
Panelist:
- Mike Millman, Managing Director, JP Morgan Capital Equity Markets, Technology, Media, and Telecom Equity Sector
- Randall Hopkins, Senior Vice President, NASDAQ Capital Markets Open Market Exchange
- Joe Morgan, Chief Investment Officer, Silicon Valley Bank
Event will be moderated by Jeff DeBoer, Managing Director, University of Oregon, Finance and Securities Analysis Center
Some of the issues to be explored:
⢠The US economy finished 2011 on a strong note. Jobs, spending, confidence, even industrial output all reflected an economy with some momentum. Can it continue in the first half of 2012 and beyond?
⢠What principal themes are guiding market returns in 2012 and beyond?
⢠Are banks lending again? How should companies raise capital? Is the IPO market back?
⢠How should technology investors and companies plan for 2012?

CHIFOO Presents: Missing the Point: The Expanding World of Gestural Interaction
Roll back
| description |
The paradigm of physical computing is well and truly hereâsensors and microcontrollers are getting cheaper and more robust, and they are easily programmable. Long associated with gaming, these sensors are making their way into our everyday âutilityâ devices. For example, think about the average smart phone: it likely contains a proximity sensor, an accelerometer/orientation sensor, an ambient light sensor, a gyroscopic sensor, and a moisture sensor. Cameras can recognize head motion and facial gestures; they can track body movements and compare them to motion models.
As these sensors become part of everyday interactive devices, we are ushering in new forms of gestural interaction, which is changing how we interact with digital experiences and data, and changing the nature of our computer-mediated communications. In this talk, Elizabeth will offer some observations and speculations on how the world of physical computing, broadly construed, is changing the way in which we interact with our devices, each other, and interactive digital experiences.
About the Speaker
Dr. Elizabeth Churchill is a Principal Research Scientist and manager of the Internet Experiences group at Yahoo! Research. Originally a psychologist by training, Elizabeth has focused throughout her career on understanding the ways in which people interactâwhether their interactions are primarily face-to-face or are technologically mediated. She has published within the areas of theoretical and applied psychology, cognitive science, human-computer interaction, and computer-supported cooperative work. Elizabeth has a BSc in Experimental Psychology and a MSc in Knowledge Based Systems, both from the University of Sussex, and a PhD in Cognitive Science from the University of Cambridge. She regularly teaches at the University of California, Berkeleyâs School of Information. In 2010, she was recognized as a Distinguished Scientist by the Association for Computing Machinery. She is the current Vice President of the Association of Computing Machineryâs (ACM) Special Interest Group on Computer Human Interaction (SigCHI).

PDX11 is proud to welcome Ken Westin, CEO of ActiveTrak, and Jeff Martens, CEO of CPUsage to lead Roundtable #2 - The Psychology of Starting Up!
On Tuesday, March 27th from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m, we will hold our second of the 2012 PDX11 Roundtable Series. This sessionâs topic is âThe Psychology of Starting Upâ â a first hand exploration of two different experiences that led to our speakers' successful launches.
The Portland startup scene is full of activity, talent, and new concepts â if youâve got these but need a candid, firsthand account on how/when/why to leave the tarmac and launch your startup, this Roundtableâs for you. Refreshments will be served, and there are a limited number of seats. Please RSVP to Tamsen Galloway to reserve a spot at the roundtable. Details will be listed at www.calagator.org.
About the PDX11 Roundtable Series:
The PDX11 Roundtable Series is an answer to the startup communityâs request for a roundtable-style, firsthand interaction with software leaders who have expertise in specific topics. These will be held on a regular basis throughout the year.
