description nil I want to get people together and start building some momentum. We are a small group right now so I want to see if we can just crowd around the end of a pub table, shoot some darts, drink some beer and eat some Pizza and talk about what we see in AR and where we each want to take it. Lucky Lab in the Pearl is a great wide open spot we can meet and if the group grows enough they have a meeting room we can rent out. So please spread the word and bring along anyone who you know into AR, Design, App programming or just wants a beer in the earlymidweek. Cheers Dave Barcos

update Calagator::Event 1250462144 Pdx Hadoop - Data Science Meeting Roll back

description The week's presentation is by the Urban Airship crew with a focus on managing big data and real-time analytics. "The main topic will be how we use Hadoop and HBase at Urban Airship for collecting and analyzing data from mobile apps. Mobile app developers integrate our client library into their apps, which send analytic events to our backend. We'll talk about the problems involved in collecting and analyzing data at scale. We use HBase for storing raw events, for feeding the analysis processes, and serving the generated reports. We use Hadoop Mapreduce for ad-hoc analysis and moving large amounts of data; we'll talk about why it's unsuitable for the kind of near-real-time incremental analysis that we do. For the data scientists, we'll talk about our data set and types of analyses we'd like to do. Our current reports are fairly basic, but we'd like to know what factors affect user engagement with mobile push notifications and whether we can make predictions about their effectiveness. " **Last minute change of plans due to presenter being under the weather.** Tonight's meeting will be a casual hack & share meeting. Here's the simple agenda: 1) Start off with group/topic related announcements (from anyone) and then let people suggest topics or things they'd like to hack on or discuss with other people in smaller groups. 2) Break up for mingling based on what you're interested in. 3) Repeat #2 above until Eric kicks us out. Good times. See you all tonight!

And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference. So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on FreeNode. One commit a week is all we ask.

create Calagator::Event 1250462177 R&D Tax Credits for Software and Biotech Companies Roll back

description nil The Research and Development Tax Credit – Benefits, Caveats, and Strategies Recently, The Fiscal Times identified the research and development tax credit as #8 of the 10 largest big corporate tax breaks*. Although over 17,000 companies claim this credit nationwide, 100 large multinationals receive over half of the 7+ billion dollars in savings each year. Find out what your company can do to receive the same level of benefit the Fortune 100 have been receiving for years. Many medical device, software, and biotech companies eligible to benefit handsomely from this credit have never applied for it, or are only receiving a small fraction of what they are eligible for. R&D credits reimburse the costs associated with a company’s breakthroughs, as well as the day-to-day activities that bring improvements in products, software, processes, profits, and productivity. The research and development credit was enacted to encourage innovation, and applies to activities throughout an organization – from conceptualization, prototyping and production, through testing and the planning of quality control. Specific coverage will include: Identifying qualifying activities throughout your company. Early stage companies - why it is never too early to claim the credit. How to effectively lower the cost of process improvement, product testing, patent applications, and other activities not commonly considered as R&D. Credits for contract manufacturing – the companies who design devices and create software aren’t the only ones eligible. Potential risks and strategies for getting the most out of the credit. Who should attend: CFO’s, controllers, in-house counsel, and others involved in financial management. Accountants and tax attorneys. Company owners, angel investors, venture capitalists, seed fund managers, and other investors looking to maximize their investment returns. Patent attorneys, operational consultants, Lean gurus, and test, and design firms interested in educating their clients on a credit that can effectively lower their service costs.

description The week's presentation is by the Urban Airship crew with a focus on managing big data and real-time analytics. The week's presentation is by the Urban Airship crew with a focus on managing big data and real-time analytics. "

This Roundtable will be hosted by Perkins Coie. Doors will be open at 5:00 p.m. for pre-discussion networking, and we will start promptly at 5:30 p.m. Areas we’ll be exploring are: • Great idea . . . but does the product really solve a big enough problem? (business and revenue models; sales and marketing) • How much operating capital is needed and where should it come from? (fundraising) • Who will launch the enterprise and how will the pie be divided? (founding and early team) • What type of entity should be formed? (legal entity type) • Where is the off-ramp and how does the company get there? (exit strategy) The Portland startup scene is full of activity, talent, and new concepts – if you’ve got these but need a candid, firsthand roadmap on applying solid strategy to your business idea, this Roundtable’s for you.
