TiE Oregon Startup Walk
Roll back
| description |

After hours of sitting in front of a computer, what better way to discuss startup issues than a walking meeting with entrepreneurs? We meet at Floyd's downtown at lunchtime on Thursdays and walk around the promenade e for about an hour. A great way to connect with like-minded people and get exercise and fresh air at the same time!
The TiE Startup Walks are free and open to everyone.

How to build a citizen newstip verification system

<p>Hi I'm a journalist here in Portland, and would be interested in putting together a joint presentation with the hackers from the March Hare collective about their open source tool suite for collecting, filtering and managing news tips on twitter and text. I helped develop a prototype for a system that would be useful for news directors like myself while I was at Stanford last year on a fellowship (<a href="http://www.newsti.ps">http://www.newsti.ps</a>) ...I had used a tool called Swiftriver, which is part of the Ushahidi project.... the basic idea is to have a multi-tiered system that will allow journalists to filter through the mess that is twitter and other social media for actual real-time news tips that are verifiable and accurate. <br>
would people be interested in something like this? if so we can set a time and date for a presentation/discussion....</p> |

Edx CS169.2x: SAAS using Ruby on Rails - Study Group
Roll back
| description |

This is the second study group meeting for CS169.2x, UC-Berkeley's second edition of its SAAS class on edx.org. (See https://www.edx.org/courses/BerkeleyX/CS169.2x/2012_Fall/about). The first homework assignment is due 6 days after this date.
The course teaches "software as a service" fundamentals using Ruby on Rails. Feel free to join us! Email me at [email protected] for any questions.
Description from EDX:
CS 169.2x is the second half of University of California, Berkeley's semester long course on Software as a Service. In the first half of the course, CS 169.1x, students use Agile development methods to deploy a simple SaaS app in the cloud. In the second half, CS 169.2x, students create more sophisticated apps by adding relationships between models in apps and by enhancing their apps with JavaScript. They also learn about what happens after the apps are deployed to real users, including how to monitor performance, identify and fix common performance problems, and avoid compromising customer data. Finally, students learn how to apply Agile techniques to enhance and refactor legacy code, a critical skill for professional programmers. |

<p>Hi, and welcome to the Portland Riak Group.</p>
<p>There are plenty of Riak Users in the PDX area, so it's time we had an official meetup. The team at AppFog was gracious enough to loan their space for the inaugural meeting, and a few members of the Basho team will be on hand to deliver pizza, beer, and stickers.</p>
<p>Here are the talks we have lined up:</p>
<p> </p>
<p>7:15</p>
<p><strong>Next Generation Searching with Yokozuna</strong></p>
<p><em>Eric Redmond; Engineer, Basho Technologies</em></p>
<p>Riak Search was created to expand Riak's query options. It's worked well enough the past couple years, but it's time to move forward. <a href="https://github.com/rzezeski/yokozuna">Yokozuna</a> is the next generation of Riak search, built on the solid Distributed Solr platform. We'll see a preview of what Yokozuna does, what it's going to do, and how that's a marked improvement from the existing Riak Search.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>8:00</p>
<p><strong>Riak & Node.js: The Hunt for Cheap, Easy Nines</strong></p>
<p><em><span>Nathan schbacher; Developer, Coradine</span></em></p>
<p>Portland-based <a href="http://coradine.com">Coradine</a> makes an innovative aviation application that helps pilots the world over. Riak powers a lot of this application. <span>Nathan Ãschbacher, developer at Coradine, will take you through:</span></p>
<ul>
<li>A quick history of our experience with Riak</li>
<li>How it came to be we opted to use it at <span>Coradine</span>
</li>
<li>Some of the known hurdles we were going to have to overcome (like cloud deployment)</li>
<li>Some of the development issues we've encountered</li>
<li>Why Node.js was a good fit for us and interfacing with Riak</li>
<li>Abandoning Redis in favor of Riak Memory-store for caching and 2i</li>
</ul><p>---</p>
<p>Hope to see you on November 19th. Let me know if you have any questions .</p>

Edx CS169.2x: SAAS using Ruby on Rails - Study Group
Roll back
| description |
This is the first study group meeting for CS169.2x, UC-Berkeley's second edition of its SAAS class on edx.org. See https://www.edx.org/courses/BerkeleyX/CS169.2x/2012_Fall/about
The course teaches "software as a service" fundamentals using Ruby on Rails. The courseware just opened this past Monday, November 5th, so a few of use are hoping to form a study group in the physical here in pdx. Feel free to join us! Email me at [email protected] for any questions.
**Description from EDX:**

Portland Perl Mongers – CI Throwdown

speaker: Jonathan "Duke" Leto
So, there's this dude named Travis who lives in a cloud and has nothing better to do on a Thursday night than download your latest commit, run your tests, and ridicule you on the twitternets when you broke the build... or something like that. But even if you don't need your pocket to jiggle on the way to fried pies, you should have some sort of automated continuous integration setup testing your code to keep you and your commits working smoothly. Jonathan will talk about Travis CI, demonstrate setting-up Travis for a public github project, and cover some of Jitterbug.
As usual, the meeting will be followed by social hour at the Lucky Lab Brew Pub. |

AgilePDX Westside (morning) - Mark Menger "The agile journey at PGE"
Roll back
| description |
Application Delivery at PGE currently uses both waterfall and iterative work management methodologies. PGEâs IT uses these to support six internal lines of business with their project and production support needs. PGE started the agile journey in 2009 in aid of a large scale multi-project initiative to roll-out network read meters for our customers. Over the subsequent three and half years, that experience was extended into where PGEâs IT delivery is today. Scaling to the enterprise required the synthesis of many different viewpoints, overcoming the deficiencies of agile training as applied in larger circumstances, and fabricating new processes and tools to enhance and manage the value of delivery. During this talk Mark will share highlights of what was valuable, what was a struggle, what he would do the same if starting over, and what he would do differently.
Bio:
Mark Menger is a passionate leader in the adoption of Scrum at Portland General Electric, believing strongly in the underpinning concepts of servant leadership and self-organization. He led four Scrum teams and the enterprise architecture function of PGEâs multi-million dollar Automated Metering Infrastructure initiative. As the supervisor of Application Delivery Services, he is currently scaling PGEâs adoption of Agile software delivery to 14 teams across six business client functions. This effort includes business client relationship development, and improvements in quality assurance and engineering practices. When heâs not rooting for the Timbers, the remainder of his attention is focused on Sailflow reports for the Columbia and Willamette rivers. |
