update Calagator::Event 1250463627 Mobile Workgroup Weekly Meeting Roll back

description Mobile Workgroup Weekly Meeting At: Lucky Lab 915 SE Hawthorne Blvd. Portland, OR 97214 Phone: 503-236-3555 6-9 pm Thursday Feb 21st A weekly workgroup for Engineers working on personal mobile projects. Beginners are encouraged to attend. We welcome software and hardware Engineers working on Android, iOS, and all mobile platforms. Working on projects by yourself can be difficult because don't get the feedback or interaction you get in an office environment. Online sites such as stackoverflow.com are great resources for answering well defined questions, but don't have the benefits of personal interactions. When you are part of a community you get to know others with similar interests, get an immediate response to hard to describe problems, bounce ideas off of others, and learn by example. The PDX Mobile Workgroup is designed to fill the void for engineers who would otherwise work on their projects in relative isolation from other engineers. The group is informal. Once a week we sit around, talk, have a bite to eat, and work on our personal projects. There is no set schedule. Attendees stop by at various times after work and stay as long as they like. We do require at least 2 confirmed attendees. If you don't RSVP and just show, you will want to check the group site before traveling to be sure the meeting is happening. create Calagator::Event 1250463641 PDX Web & Design Talk - Designing in a Bubble: Where technology, creativity and business collide Roll back

description nil Shake off the winter blues with Amy Dubin, who will present on the myriad considerations all designers face in their roles as visual information disseminators. Being a designer means taking into account an enormous array of factors, which includes the business and marketing plans that drive demand for your product. Coming up with a product that fits the whole picture will make you not only competitive, but in demand. The tough part is-how to gain this knowledge when 'business' just isn't your thing? This talk offers practical resources to help you understand how big the 'whole picture' really is, where you fit, where you may lack particular skills and how to get them in the most painless way possible. Knowing who to ask for help, and when, is a key strategy and we'll uncover tactics to help you design your career, as well as your products, successfully. Apologies for shifting the date on this one... the second Thursday was Valentines day. Thanks to Vitamin-T for providing food; Thanks to Webtrends for the space; Thanks to Amy for presenting an interesting topic! -Eric Redmond, Organizer of meetup.com/pdxweb

update Calagator::Event 1250463544 PDX Data Visualization Meetup Roll back

description We have 4 speakers lined up for the popular show-n-tell format. ==Kevin Lynagh== Kevin writes code that makes pictures of data on the Internet. He lives in Portland, Oregon and spends as much time rock climbing as he does in the REPL. WeatherTable is an HTML5 weather app for the iPhone. Kevin will talk about why they decided to build an app in such an established category (hint: visualization) and why they decided to do it using ClojureScript, HTML, and CSS instead of doing a native ObjectiveC app. ==Matthew Lyon== Matthew is a lead developer and software architect at Portland-based Platform-as-a-Service company AppFog. He was one of the core developers of AppFog's first product, PHP Fog, and led development of AppFog itself. He will be doing a show-and-tell about an instrumentation and visualization system he created to help troubleshoot and improve AppFog's Service Oriented Architecture and worldwide network of public cloud hosting services. ==Ryan Miller== Ryan is a UI developer with over 10 years of experience with web applications. Ryan specializes in data visualization, which he works on at home when he can't get his fix at work. Ryan will be showing some experiments he's been doing in d3 with local weather data. ==Periscopic== Periscopic is a socially-conscious data visualization firm. They will be discussing their latest internal project: U.S. Gun Murders in 2010. Please see the agenda and RSVP at the Meetup: http://www.meetup.com/PDX-Data-Visualization/events/103543552/ We have 4 speakers lined up for the popular show-n-tell format. ==Kevin Lynagh== Kevin writes code that makes pictures of data on the Internet. create Calagator::Event 1250463635 OEN Workshop in Hillsboro: Lean Startup - The One Page Business Model Roll back

description nil A startup is an organization that is searching for a business model that works. It's critical to understand that a startup's business model is a set of assumptions - and those assumptions need to be tested, earlier rather than later! And earlier means before you develop the product or service! (But even if you've already started developing the product is still the right time to validate the business model!) A 1 page business model canvas is an excellent way to capture the assumptions underlying your business model, so you can methodically test those assumptions. In this workshop, you'll learn about the lean startup approach, and be introduced to the 1 Page Lean Business Model Canvas, and discuss how you can use the canvas to test each assumption in the model. Then you'll work through a “hands on” exercise where you complete and present to the group a portion of your 1 page lean canvas. All participants will receive printed copies of the Lean Canvas to use, and will also be provided with a PowerPoint version of the canvas so they can continue to create canvases on a computer. Who should attend: Anyone who is starting a business and has not yet developed and tested the business model for that business. This material and process is relevant for any startup - not just tech startups. Presenter: Steve Morris Steve Morris is the Executive Director of OTBC and the Managing Director of OregonStartups.com. He is a veteran of three start-ups, and has more than 25 years of management experience in the software, service, and semiconductor test industries at companies such as Hewlett Packard, Integrated Measurement Systems, Cadence Design Systems, Mentor Graphics, Credence Corporation and Teseda Corporation. He holds a B.A. in mathematics from Reed College and a Masters of Science degree from Carnegie-Mellon University Graduate School of Industrial Administration (now The Tepper School of Business). create Calagator::Event 1250463634 OEN Workshop in Hillsboro: Tax Issues for Startups Roll back

description nil Does the word "taxes" have you reacting with a blank, questionable stare? When making a list of priorities, startups tend to list taxes right above, "getting a plant service for the office." As with most startups, there may be a significant period of time before the business becomes profitable. However, there are business decisions you make today that can greatly affect your income tax situation in the future. These decisions include what type of entity your company wants to be, where your company wants to be located or even how your company obtains sales. Also, there are other types of taxes besides income, e. g. sales, payroll and B & O, that can distract you from the beginning. Andrew Meyers will help get you through the startup "tax maze" so that you can more effectively focus on growing your startup and be well positioned for long-term success. Speaker: Andrew Meyers Andrew joined the Perkins & Co tax department in 2005 and is a member of our high-tech/emerging growth and real estate practice groups. Andrew has diversified experience managing tax engagements in a wide variety of companies in several industries, including distributors, manufacturing, technology and real estate. His experience includes working with all types of entity structures; however, much of his time is spent assisting our corporate clients engaged in the manufacturing of technology related products who file in multiple jurisdictions. This gives him a wide range of knowledge in areas related to state/local nexus and filing requirements, revenue recognition issues and research & development credits, as well as other challenges businesses confront in this industry. Prior to joining us, Andrew spent a year and a half as an auditor at a mid-size local firm in Portland where he served manufacturing, technology and privately held businesses. Andrew holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting as well as Economics from Portland State University. He is a licensed CPA and a member of the AICPA and OSCPA. He is also a member of YPOP, a networking organization for young professionals in the Portland metro area.
