Glass Plate Game
Roll back
| description |
Inspired by Hermann Hesse's novel "The Glass Bead Game", the Glass Plate Game, is essentially a conversation in the trappings of a board game. The idea is to spark creative and interesting dialog as the players explore connections between ideas against a dynamic mosaic map. There are no winners or losers. There is no order of play. Conversation flows throughout, and the end result is an artifact of the conversation, which can, itself, become a subject of further discussion.
The topic of the game begins as Math and Science in Sci-Fi
(the meta-game). We will begin with an introduction to the Game then launch right into playing. If you can't make it on time or stay the whole time, come anyway! It's better to see you briefly than not at all. The Game can last as long as we want it to, and go in any direction. After playing, there will be time for interested parties to talk further. |

How good is your English? Is your grammar good enough to take you to the highest levels of public speaking?
Based on years of speaking experience and talking with NSA's most seasoned speakers, David Rabiner, CSP, has designed this program to help you sound better on stage and avoid deadly grammatical mistakes. This is your chance to learn how to sound like a pro.
Join us to learn how to:
Establish your authority with large and/or educated audiences.
Skip the high school grammar and punctuationâlearn valuable tips that you can use immediately in your next speech
Avoid major mistakes and your audience thinking, âDid she really say that??â
Have credibility with people who are smarter than you
This will be a fun and fast-paced program that focuses on the most common speaking mistakes that smart, educated people make. You'll probably hear mistakes that you made earlier that same day, and you'll learn techniques so that these rules stick with you forever.
(You'll even learn the real difference between "who" and "whom"!)
*One of the most experienced professional speakers in the country, David Rabiner has averaged more than 100 presentations each year since 1993.
In total, he has made over 1800 presentations, wowing audiences in 12 countries and 45 states with his rare combination of expertise, humor, energy, and story-telling.
In 2003, David earned the coveted Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) designation, the international benchmark for speaking excellence currently held by fewer than 600 people worldwide.* |

QA Forum: 2013 the Year of Responsive Web Design
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
As mobile web usage has exploded over the past few years, Responsive Web Design (RWD) has become one of the go-to solutions to provide content across a universe of different browsers and devices. Apps and websites have merged into one. In simple terms, a responsive web design uses "media queries" to figure out what resolution of device it's being served on. Flexible images and fluid grids then size correctly to fit the screen. From a QA view, how can we effectively test RWD. The Technology Association of Oregon (TAO) is excited to provide an opportunity to gather and discuss lessons learned and real life strategies to test these applications.
On Thursday, February 28th, the Quality Assurance Forum of the TAO is presenting a panel discussion on Responsive Web Design â Testing. Come join us for an engaging evening with your SQA peers centered on how to test Responsive Web.
Panelists:
Lyza Danger Gardner, co-founder, Cloud Four
Since co-founding Portland, Ore.-based mobile web start-up Cloud Four (http://www.cloudfour.com) in 2007, Lyza has tortured and thrilled herself with the intricate ins and outs of the bazillion devices and browsers now accessing the web globally. Lyza and co-founder Jason Grigsby are the authors of Head First Mobile Web.
Trent Peterson, co-founder, AppThwack -
Trent Peterson spent seven years at Intel designing system-automation solutions trusted to test products used by millions of customers with an emphasis on simplicity and user experience. He left in early 2012 to co-found AppThwack,a mobile app testing service that helps developers quickly and automatically test their apps on real devices.
Pawel Wojnarowicz, co-founder, AppThwack -
Pawel Wojnarowicz built an automation platform in his spare time that became the official solution for testing all wireless products at Intel. Pawel left after nine years to co-found AppThwack, a mobile app testing service that helps developers quickly and automatically test their apps on real devices.

TechFestNW (formerly known as PDXconf) is designed to celebrate interesting people who are passionate about technology. Who are building a better world. And who value craft over commodity.
The event takes place in conjunction with MusicFestNW, one of the largest independent music festivals in the US. Last year, MFNW attracted acts from up-and-coming artists to bands like Passion Pit, Dinosaur Jr, Silversun Pickups, and Girl Talk. While the inaugural tech event featured speakers from Flipboard, Betaworks, Walmart Labs, GigaOM, Shazam, and Spotify---as well as local favorites like Draplin Design Co, LAIKA, Chirpify, Simple, and Nike.
TFNW will take place September 6-8, 2013, with speakers the 6th and 7th and a hackathon on the 8th. Tech takes place during the day. And music takes place during the night. Creating a true festival atmosphere.

AgilePDX Downtown Pub Lunch: Cambia's Agile Transformation
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Over the last decade, agile practices continued to gain a foothold in many companies. Many of the practices were first tried on a smaller scale, and tailored to green-field projects. But, as agile practices are adopted at multi-site, larger companies, with complex back office projects, they bring with them additional and unique challenges. Take for example, Cambia Health Solutions, a not-for-profit, health Solutions Company. Cambia has a relatively large IT group, which develops its own software solutions and integrates software from other vendors. It has a distributed workforce that spans four states with many work-at-home employees. Cambia’s mainline business is regulated by various state entities and national agencies. Many of Cambia’s projects are large, mandated compliance projects that have a fixed time box and a set scope. Missing either the deadline or scope could potentially mean losing a significant portion of its business or facing monetary penalties. Can agile practices work and scale to solve business problems facing the company? What if you also operate within an IT organization that is structured with functional silos? And what if you have reluctant business partners who define software requirements and perform final verification of software solutions? To tackle these challenges, Cambia organized an Enterprise Transition Community to lead the transition from a patchwork of agile practices to a large-scale agile implementation. Find out how we carried out this transition, what we have learned along the way, and how that might help organizations of all sizes take on a similar challenge.
Aashish co-presented a related paper with other Cambia staff at last year's PNSQC. You can find the paper here by searching on Aashish's name on the page: http://www.pnsqc.org/past-conferences/2012-conference/paper-and-presentations/#papers
Aashish Vaidya is a Technology Manager leading Specialized Teams at Cambia Health Solutions. He is a founding member of Cambia’s Enterprise Transition Community, and other Best Practices Exchanges. He also serves as an internal coach on Agile and QA practices. Aashish has over 20+ years working in technology development and leadership positions for companies such as Compaq, Intel, and Kronos Incorporation. In 2012, Aashish was a Co-Author and presenter at PNSQC. In 2011, Aashish was a panelist on Technology Association of Oregon’s panel discussion: QA’s Role in Agile. He is a graduate of Texas A&M University, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering. |

This month we'll focus on an incredibly important topic for professional and hobbyist UAV pilots alike - keeping our passion legal in Oregon!
In case you haven't heard, two bills were recently introduced to the Oregon legislature which will immediately criminalize every consumer and hobbyist who owns a toy or model aircraft capable of capturing images of people or objects.
W're going to focus on what we can do to save Hobby UAVs. |

* The Definition of Local Flavor
Since opening its doors in the heart of downtown Portland, the Red Star Tavern & Roast House has treated world travelers and devout regulars to the spirit of the region. That can include literal spirits, like our famous collection of bourbons, scotches and whiskeys, a staff that is genuinely glad to see you, and memorable cuisine that adds a northwest twist to American traditions. Much like Portland itself.
* Get Comfortable
Ideally located near Pioneer Square, adjacent to the Hotel Monaco, and not far from where Portlanders get off work, Red Star welcomes folks with a good reason to enjoy themselves. The historic building delivers the timeless ambiance of a true tavern to a contemporary mix of customers. Since introducing a Happy Hour that stretches from 4 — 8 p.m., The Red Star has been the place to meet and unwind. Whether you prefer lively socializing, or sinking into a booth for private conversation, we're here to make you comfortable.
* Meet Chef Kyle
Executive Chef Kyle Rourke took awhile to reach Portland, making stops in Philly, the Jersey Shore and San Diego before bringing his culinary skills and fun-loving attitude to the Northwest. Now he considers himself a local, and you'll find it in the food he serves up: creative interpretations of comfort food favorites, seasonal menus highlighting regional cuisine, and produce purchased as close to Portland as you can get. And his vegan, vegetarian and gluten free dishes aren't just options, their pretty remarkable all by themselves. |

DAMA Day 2013 - Data Virtualization in Business Intelligence Systems
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Studies show clearly that the way decisions are made in organizations is changing. The biggest change is that, Managers have to react faster. The effect is that our BI systems have to be more flexible, more agile. In addition, new forms of Reporting and Analytics are being requested by the user community, such as Operational Analytics, 360° Reporting, Exploratory Analysis, Big Data Analytics, Self-Service BI, and semi-structured and unstructured data analytics. All these new requirements demand that BI systems are developed in a more agile way. One of the technologies making this possible is Data Virtualization.
These sessions focus on Data virtualization when deployed in Business Intelligence systems. The advantages of Data virtualization are explained; products are compared; application areas are discussed; and the relationship with related topics, such as MDM, Data Governance, and SOA are discussed.
About DAMA Portland
The Portland Metro Chapter of the Data Administration Management Association is a not-for-profit, vendor independent, professional association dedicated to advancing the concepts and practices of enterprise information and data resource management.
Our primary purpose is to promote the understanding, development and practice of managing data, information and knowledge resources as key enterprise assets.
Portland Metro Chapter members, guests and speakers meet a minimum of six times a year to widen their knowledge base in topics relevant to information and data resource management. |

Until now, nonparametric regression has been a heuristic process - fitting a surface without statistically justifiable confidence measures. With the discovery of the gamma test, there is now a mean squared error estimator that is applicable to the nonparametric case. It will revolutionize the discovery of causal relationships in data.

The Portland Linux/Unix Group Advanced Topics meeting
Making real change for musicians with open source. We'll start by taking a look at some of the nuances of making a living as a musician, dispelling some myths about how the industry works and what is and is not working for artists today. Then we'll move on to specifics of what CASH Music is doing (along with a lot of friends) to improve things for artists with transparent models, education, and open source technologies.
Jesse von Doom is an English musician, airline pilot, and broadcaster best known as the lead vocalist of the heavy metal band CASH Music. CASH is a nonprofit organization building free and open source tools for musicians. More: http://cashmusic.org/
Many will head to the Lucky Lab on Hawthorne after the meeting. |

Presentation on "Peopleware: Productive Projects and Teams"
"The major problems of our work are not so much technological as sociological in nature". - Peopleware
Building good software products is a tricky business and though we often focus technical risks, it's the social issues that frequently derail projects.
Peopleware discusses a broad swath of the challenges that arise in our industry: office environments, staffing, overtime, team chemistry, software processes, etc. And it does so with a sense of humor and anecdotes while still treating the subject seriously with references to case studies and research that underlie much of the material.
Peopleware easily stands out as my favorite software book, a great read for anyone in the industry and a must read for anyone in management. |
