create Calagator::Event 1250464885 Research Club Brunch 32 Roll back

description nil #Brunch 31 ** *September 29, Noon - 2pm* ** This month through the end of 2013, Brunch has its own apartment, smack in the middle of downtown Portland. Please Note: Brunch has slimmed down. Talks start at 12:30, and everything finishes by 2pm. We are doing something a bit different this month. A member of the RC Board has been working with the Lewis and Clark College Venture competition and suggested we have some of the student businesses do a "dress rehearsal" of the final pitch they will present to a panel of judges where they could receive up to $30,000 in funding for their venture. In keeping with the spirit of the competition, we're going to give you very little info about these businesses. The students will be looking for feedback on their presentation and how well they pitch their venture. Exciting! **Bring some or all of these things for the optimum Brunch Experience** * A healthy sense of curiosity * Food to share * Friends! Lots of friends! * Your own plates and utensils #This Month's Speakers **Lee LaTour** [Lewis and Clark Venture Competition](http://college.lclark.edu/programs/entrepreneurship/venture_competition/) An overview of the competition and Lewis and Clark's new entrepreneurship program. **Zachary Tobias, Ryan Bubriski and Will Fortini** [Portland Mushroom Company](http://www.portlandmushroomco.com) The goal of the Portland Mushroom Company is to provide high-quality locally produced oyster mushrooms to the Portland metropolitan area and lead the way in urban mushroom cultivation in the Northwest. **Robert Bart, Howard Voght, Jeffrey Crosswhite, and Thomas Sunderland** [Forge Portland](http://forgeportland.org) The goal of Forge Portland is to provide a shared workspace for nonprofit organizations that helps accelerate progress toward their goals by reducing overhead costs, pooling resources, and creating a vibrant and collaborative atmosphere.

create Calagator::Event 1250464875 Galois Tech Talk: Chris Anderson on Using Drones in Agriculture Roll back

description nil Small unmanned aircraft---more often called drones---are set to make a big impact on agriculture. You already know about military drones operating overseas, and perhaps you've even seen recreational drones starring in youtube videos, but as the FAA begins permitting commercial use of unmanned aircraft in 2015, you'll see drones replacing all sorts of roles that used to require a manned aircraft, and taking on new roles made possible by their low cost, versatility, and safety. Chris Anderson will speak about the upcoming role of drones in agriculture, a field Chris says "is a big data problem without the big data." Chris will describe how farmers can will drones to curb plant disease, conserve water, and reduce pesticide and fertilizer use. He'll discuss the challenges ahead to integrate air vehicle systems with sensors, specialized cameras, and data processing.

create Calagator::Event 1250464870 Portland Java User Group Roll back

description nil ### Mastering Time With Clojure and core.async We all know that the most challenging programming problems we're likely to face involve threading. Lots and lots of threads, coordinating and communicating in complex and non-deterministic ways. Clojure by itself gets us part of the way there with immutable data-structures and threading primitives (such as atoms and agents), but coordinating many threads in the ways demanded by real applications increases complexity and reduces performance. core.async is a new library for Clojure that rationalizes and simplifies coordination of large numbers of threads using communicating sequential processes; the end result is manageable code that looks and feels synchronous ... easy to read, easy to maintain. As is often the case in Clojure, a few simple primitives work together to open up a rich world of possibilities.
