MapAttack Portland Urban Geofencing Game!
Roll back
| description |
Come play MapAttack, a real-time urban geofencing game for iPhone and Android! Bring your device (iPhones running iOS 7 and new-ish Android devices). Teams will start at Backspace and collect points around the city blocks of Portland. Teams that get the most points win! Built on the Esri Geotrigger Service.
After much work, the game is working very well and is very fun to play. We'll have PacMan ponchos if it's raining out, but you should bring running shoes or warm clothes if you feel you need them. Come with phones pre-charged!
Meet at Backspace around 12:30pm! Game will start shortly after! We'll have multiple games, so don't worry if you can't make it at the exact time. |

Multicultural coding workshop
Roll back
| description |

There's a big disparity in the racial makeup of the Portland coding community, so Epicodus is offering an almost-free one-day workshop on Saturday, October 26, from 10am - 1pm for people of color who want to learn web programming.
You can register at epicodus.eventbrite.com.
No coding experience is necessary! At minimum, you should be comfortable using computers. At most, you may have done some HTML and/or CSS, but aren't a professional developer.
We'll cover the basics of how the web works, what part languages and frameworks and other buzzwords play, and then we'll dive into writing some code! By the end, you'll have a good sense of how to continue learning web programming.
I'm asking for an $8 registration fee, mainly so you don't flake, but also to cover me buying you breakfast and coffee! If you can't afford to pay, just drop me a line letting me know your situation and promising me that you won't bail.
Space is limited to 24 participants. You don't need to bring a computer, but you do need to bring headphones (you'll go through some video tutorials).
Feel free to email michael[at]epicodus[dot]com with any questions at all! |

Portland Startup Weekend
Roll back
| description |
Ever wondered what it takes to be an entrepreneur?
The professional and personal challenges, the high and lows, the failures and the success?
Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 400 past events in 100 countries around the world in 2011.
The non-profit organization is headquartered in Seattle, Washington but Startup Weekend organizers and facilitators can be found in over 200 cities around the world. From Mongolia to South Africa to London to Brazil, people around the globe are coming together for weekend long workshops to pitch ideas, form teams, and start companies.
All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then itâs a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.
Whether entrepreneurs found companies, find a cofounder, meet someone new, or learn a skill far outside their usual 9-to-5, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups. If you want to put yourself in the shoes of an entrepreneur, register now for the best weekend of your life! |

Come hang out, drink beer, and write code *every* Monday night.
The meetings are extremely informal, and everyone is welcome! It is highly suggested that you bring a laptop and a project to work on.
Maybe we'll be in the middle room, maybe in the back room, just keep walking until you see a table full of laptops.

Learn How to Bootstrap your Startup
Roll back
| description |
Learn how to bootstrap, from a startup that is successfully doing that today.
On Oct. 22 at OTBC, Ragav Satish and Micah Elliott, founders of Membean, will talk about their challenges and accomplishments in bootstrapping a startup into revenue, with no investor funding. There will be plenty of time for Q and A.
How do you start and grow a company without investor funding - and without being independently wealthy? How do you build a team when you have little or no cashflow? How do you fund development? How can you afford to grow the team with sales and marketing skills, when those additions have to be funded by revenue? Membean has done all of that, and is continuing to grow their business without investor funding. We'll explore with the Membean founders Ragav Satish and Micah Elliott how they tackled some of these challenges.
Membean provides online vocabulary instruction with an Adaptive Reinforcement Engine that helps students retain what they learn. Their current focus is middle schools and high schools. Their customers include more than 180 schools.
Size: 4 people. Market: SAAS for K-12 schools. Stage: Revenue producing customer base |

PSU-TAO Cleanweb Hack
Roll back
| description |
Are you a talented developer, designer, or care about the well-being of your life and the city of Portland?
PSU-TAO Cleanweb Hack are hosting the first CleanWeb Hack and will bring together developers, designers, innovators, entrepreneurs, and students to illuminate the opportunities for creating new efficiency in energy, buildings, waste and water. The event will bring together talent and technology resources to explore the intersection of information technology (web, social, mobile) and issues related to climate change and global resource constraints focusing on energy, waster, transportation and sustainability.
This will be one of the first hackathons in the country to take advantage of the U.S. Department of Energyâs new API for its building performance database. Additional DOE datasets that will be available to attendees include datasets pertaining to energy, solar, and utility rates.
The Cleanweb Hack represents the first of what will likely be a regular series of collaborative efforts between the tech industry and academia in Oregon. This is also a "tech laboratoryâ where students will work alongside professionals to apply their knowledge. Participants will spend one day hacking in small teams to create radical new solutions across key Cleanweb sectors and will present their creations to a panel of judges.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided.
There will be a Pre-Event Networking on the evening of October 23rd. Please check out the posting on 10/23 or go to the registration page for more details.

The Portland Linux/Unix Group meets three times a month:
First Thursday General Meeting at PSU
Third Tuesday Advanced Topics Meeting at Free Geek
Third Sunday Clinic at Free Geek
We try announce our speakers two weeks in advance but some times it is last minute. They're usually conference-quality none the less.
Many attendees will break for a social hour at the Lucky Lab on Hawthorne after the meeting
See you there! |

Why: The pursuit of technology freedom
Contain yourselves!
Daniel and Michael have been working with various virtual machines technologies and would like to have a roundtable style talk with micro presentations about each one, including:
Erlang VMs
bhyve BSD Hypervisor VMs
Xen VM's
Haskell VMs (hopefully) and
Linux Containers if we can rattle a familiar PLUG face's cage
We've invited a few guests and will give you a survey of some of the great things going on with open source virtualization technology.
