update Calagator::Event 1250464931 Mobile Portland: When Responsive Web Design Meets the Real World Roll back

description Why are so many responsive web designs crap? Over 90% of responsive web sites are bloated. These sites may look good on mobile devices, but few people will ever see them because they take to long to load. While the core tenets of responsive web design are easy to understand, doing it well is much more difficult. Slapping a few media queries on your existing site isn't enough. The solution is mobile first responsive web design. Mobile first and responsive web design aren't simply two great tastes that go great together. No they represent much more than that. Mobile first responsive web design is the responsible way to build responsive design. It is the best way to build something that is both responsive from a layout AND a performance perspective. Image of Boston Globe Responsive Design But if mobile first is the right way to do responsive design, then why are so few people doing it? In this session, we'll dig into why mobile first responsive design matters and the five techniques necessary to make it work. If your company is exploring responsive design of even if you're already building responsive designs, you won't want to miss this talk. About Jason Grigsby Jason GrigsbyJason and his Cloud Four co-founder Lyza Gardner wrote Head First Mobile Web which teaches web developers how to take their web skills and transfer them to mobile. He was a signatory to the Future Friendly manifesto which addresses sensible approaches to device diversity. Jason travel frequently giving talks and workshops helping individuals and organizations figure out how to best apply web technology to their multi-device efforts. Jason is also the founder of Mobile Portland. He normally avoids speaking at Mobile Portland meetings for this reason, but we've twisted his arm this month. update Calagator::Event 1250464762 Mobile Portland: Hype, Hyperbole and the Hope of the Internet of Things Roll back

description The Internet of Things is a great tag open to a multitude of expansions. Early Internet architects envisioned small numbers of nodes. The IPV4 address space is on the order of the population of the earth. Internet visionaries like Deborah Estrin and many others foresaw a use case for sensors and new things beyond toasters to connect to the Internet, resulting in IPV6 with 2**95, or about 30 octillion Internet-connected things per person. Tonight's speaker, Surj Patel, is uniquely situated to give you a view of the Internet of Things. Patel studied at MIT's media lab and mediated discussions of Internet futures at Gigaom. Now he is CEO of an Internet of Things startup. Patel also created and helms the Portland Internet of Things meetup, destined to expand internationally. Join us for an evening of networking and enlightenment. It is free. 1417 NE Everett, Portland, OR 97209 The Internet of Things is a great tag open to a multitude of expansions. update Calagator::Event 1250464510 ChickTech Problem-Storming for Nonprofits Roll back

description <h2> NOTE: This is now a 1 day event. We hope you can join us. </h2> <h2>Let's use our skills to make our community a better place for women and girls!</h2> Are you a woman interested in brainstorming and creating solutions for a nonprofit? Well, we have the event for you! We're bringing in nonprofits who are focused on women and girls (or issues that women and girls encounter) who have something that they've been struggling with...and our goal is to have a viable solution for each of them by the end of the weekend! <h3>Do I have the skills to attend?</h3> <ul> <li>Are you a women who is 15 years of age or older?</li> <li>Are you a programmer?</li> <li>Are you an interface designer?</li> <li>Are you a manager?</li> <li>Are you a teacher (either officially or not)?</li> <li>Do you have experience with psychology?</li> <li>Are you an artist?</li> <li>Are you passionate about helping non-profits?</li> </ul> If you answered yes to any of those, then yes! You should. We are looking to have teams of women with diverse backgrounds. If you are under 15, let us know and we will see if we can work something out. <h3>Why should I attend?</h3> <ul> <li>Altruism. Community-Mindedness. You'd like to help the local community with your skills. </li> <li>Learn from your group members. You'll be on a diverse team of women. We are sure that you'll learn a lot from each other!</li> <li>Learn about the non-profits. Portland has a great nonprofit community and this event will help you get in touch with some of them.</li> <li>Help fundraise for ChickTech K-12 events. By paying for your participation, you are not only getting this experience (and food for days!), you are also helping to make our K-12 events free for participants. Thank you in advance for your support!</li> <li>Childcare is provided.</li> <li>Delicious food is provided. Eat up!</li> </ul><h3>What are we doing, exactly?</h3> You will be in a group of women working on a project for a local nonprofit. The projects are listed below under the Nonprofits section. Each project will have a tech component, but we're looking to create a team with diverse skills to address the needs of the nonprofit. Each group will have a ChickTech or Thetus volunteer to help out. Each group will have a representative from the nonprofit to answer any questions. At the end of the weekend, we want to have a viable solution for the non-profit. <h3>Can men attend?</h3> YES! We are looking for supportive techie guys to help provide childcare for the event in order to break yet another stereotype. We are hoping to have some fun, hands-on activities for the kids too, depending on ages and age ranges. <h3>Can I attend for free? </h3> YES! We are offering a sliding scale because we do not want cost to be a barrier for anyone to attend. If you can afford any of the cost options, please help us out! This will help us cover the costs of this event. Any extra money goes to funding our K-12 programs to ensure that they remain free for participants. <h3>Event Schedule</h3> Friday: 6:30p - 9p, hors d'oeuvres, choose projects, meet teams! Saturday: 9:30a - 5:30p, breakfast, work with teams, lunch, more work! update Calagator::Event 1250463471 World Information Architecture Day 2013 Event PDX Roll back

description Welcome to World Information Architecture Day 2013! Please register for this event on Eventbrite. Come learn about what Information Architecture means and about some of the challenges facing Portland's leading practitioners. Ideal for: Anyone interested in technology, creative tech, business of tech, industry pros, students and everyone in between.  Thanks to our sponsors: AIGA, IxDA, PDX Web and Design Meetup, Northwest Creatives Social Club, People's Sandwich of Portland and Floyd's Coffee Our speaker lineup is amazing! 10am: Jeanne Turner-Walmart Labs  Cultivating Good Will in the Digital World When we have to wait 20 minutes for service after being seated at a restaurant, or when a grocery store is disorganized and the clerk is distracted and unhelpful, then we know that something is wrong with the situation. In the physical world, lack of information and poor interactions are obvious. In the physical world, we know how to make improvements that increase customer satisfaction. How can we translate this understanding to the digital world? What do we need to understand about human nature to improve digital experiences? In this talk, Jeanne Turner will discuss concepts and techniques that allow us to cultivate good will in the digital world. 11am: Patricia Colley-Interactionflow Civilizing Information Architecture: A meditation on systems design What is the scope of information architecture practice? To design optimal architectural structures, we know we must empathize with its inhabitants, and apply deep expertise in organization, language and flow. But we've learned, this alone will not ensure a design's success. As we dive deeply into the churning sea of design and technology trends, tools and methods, we often forget how we orient to design practice, and its increasingly complex problems, as thoughtful human beings. Will our apps, widgets and gadgets come to serve us, or will we lose ourselves in a wilderness of unmitigated digital distractions and breakdowns? To civilize our digital future, we are compelled to take a systems view of design practice. We are compelled to shift our perspectives and spark grander dialogues. This session will examine the origins and evolution of the IA role, the current and emerging climate in which our products reside, and put forth a few principles and methods to help answer the call to broaden our vision and expand our influence in a changing world. 12p: Huston Hedinger-Wikisway Networks as a User Interface The mathematics of graph theory and its many applications via network science in sociology, bioinformatics, intelligence, and even physics, represent a paradigm shift in how we study and consider information. Over the last 30 years, machines have allowed us to structure data in such a way that allow us to analyze the complex interactions between the individual actors in networks. These interactions turn out to reveal patterns that are both predictable and obedient to mathematical laws- many in the academic community are just beginning to grasp the power an the importance of these claims. The ability to visualize networks allowing the researcher/user/customer to quickly understand the structure and behavior of a network is the main focus of this talk. 1p: Matthew Baranauskas and Noah DiJulio-Ziba Meeting the Challenges of Innovating on Top of Existing Platforms Information architecture is the keystone of every digital experience. It's where consumer needs and desires often collide with a brand's hopes and dreams. The danger for companies as they grow is figuring out how to integrate new features into their customer's existing experience. Using real world examples and personal anecdotes, Matthew and Noah will discuss how they navigate the challenge of innovating on top of existing platforms using a consumer-centric approach. You'll gain perspective on where to look for inspiration and insight, how to prioritize features into something that is meaningful and authentic, and how not to lose your mind in the process. 2p: Joel Barker and Michael Sulis-Wordlions and Summit Energy Tech, respectively Capture, Tagging and Release of Institutional Knowledge: Delivering Information in the Real World When creating a system to deliver institutional information outside of the organization, the success of the project rests on understanding the requirements and work process of all stakeholders. In this case study, Summit Energy Tech and Word Lions collaborated to collect, organize, and make available the mission critical institutional knowledge that was the foundation of our client’s relationship with their customers. This presentation will cover not only our solution, but the points where understanding the client capacity makes the difference between implementation and project failure. 3p: Alison Stump-The Social Wall Visualizing Insight: Getting Started in Information Architecture Information Architecture has only recently been given the respect it deserves by those outside the realm of User Experience. Often the designs we build are so elegant they appear simple. The average person on the street knows that a menu bar probably goes at the top of the page. In most cases its "common sense". It is positioned on the top of the page because an Information Architect thought about all the options, considered the usability and user research data and delivered a product that just works. That is what information Architecture is. So how do you do it? We will discuss a basic schema, various tools and resources to help you get started as well as key terms and phrases that will allow you to escalate your career. 4p: Dedrick Sprick-OHSU Progressive Content Strategy: A content commitment model There are a lot of hurdles to overcome for managing content well on any site. Managing content well includes knowing your website, scheduling tasks, getting the resources together, staying on top of trends and responding to visitor needs. Learn how to tackle this monumental task one step at a time, so your team can grow with your website.   We can have only 80 guests/session, so it's all first come, first served, so make sure you're on time!  Also, food and drink is allowed, but not provided. Please go to Floyd's Coffee across the street or People's Sandwich of Portland to find food, or bring your own. Afterparty @Backspace 'til whenever. update Calagator::Event 1250458083 Agile Open Northwest 2010 Roll back

description Announcing Agile Open Northwest 2010! This Agile Open Space event will be held February 9th and 10th, 2010, in the Seattle Center Northwest Rooms. Please see http://www.agileopennorthwest.org for registration information and further details. We invite you to our fourth annual Agile Open Northwest conference. Alternating each year between Portland and Seattle, AONW conferences bring together practicing members of the Northwest Agile communities to explore the latest developments in agile software development. We held our third annual event last year in Portland and enjoyed another great success. Registration is $125.00 for both days, including light breakfast and lunch. This low-cost regional conference is a great opportunity to connect with the local agile community, experts and novices alike. Please join us this year as we host 125 experienced, collaborative, committed agile practitioners from the Northwest U.S. (and beyond) in tackling the issues around our recurring theme "Agile for Real." As in past years, attendance is limited to a predetermined number in order retain the many advantages a small conference has to offer. Here is a comment from a previous attendee: "These two-day Agile Open Northwest conferences are an extremely good value. ..[Y]ou learn directly from practitioners in the agile community what works and what doesn't. I attended the first two of these conferences, they were stunningly good... loads of practical, useful stuff and stimulating discussions." -- Ian Savage, PNSQC Program Chair More information can be found at http://www.agileopennorthwest.org. Registration is open now. We look forward to seeing you there. Announcing Agile Open Northwest 2010! update Calagator::Event 1250465038 PSU-TAO Cleanweb Hack (updated) Roll back

description If you haven't already signed up for the Hack tomorrow at PSU, we hope some details included here will entice you. To prepare our participants for a fun and productive day, below are details and resources for the Hack. Goals: To generate ideas are innovative to solving environmental and sustainability, social equity issues through utilization of software and mobile apps. Don’t forget to have some fun. Idea Generation: To start, you should ask the following questions: 1) What issues you and your team would like to tackle? (ie. carbon emissions reduction by buildings or vehicles, solar potential identifier, change of personal habits, e-waste tracking, etc.) 2) What do other similar applications exist on the market? Sometimes, building on existing apps can resolve a more refined product. 3) What is the marketability? Is it scalable? The best project ideas are one that you are passionate about, and have some components of competition and linkage to social media. Finding Data: While you are brainstorming ideas, you should also consider data availability as well. It is not the end of the world if you don’t have data sets or APIs to mock up a prototype. Simply build your own datasets, even if just a few that are enough for you to test out your product. See the Cleanweb Hack resource guide for APIs, data sets, sample projects and project ideas. (http://tinyurl.com/m7a744e) Judging Criteria: At the end of day, your prototype will be scored on these criteria: 1) Impact on resource and sustainability issues 2) Design and usability of prototype 3) Feasibility and marketability 4) Good use of datasets and APIs Prizes: 1st Place - $500, 2nd Place - $250 Bragging right is priceless. Our judges are looking forward to your innovations! Winston Saunders, Director of Data Center Security Initiatives at Intel Chris Harder, Division Manager at the Portland Development Commission (PDC) Skip Newberry, President at the Technology Association of Oregon (TAO) Questions? Ask us on Twitter (@cleanwebPDX), Facebook or via email [email protected] There will be food, drink and good companies. Come out to have some fun! --------------------------------------------- What is Cleanweb? Cleanweb is a meme, a movement, a market that individuals/organizations are leveraging information technologies to address the world's critical resource challenges. This web of technologies can optimize how we use resources across the way we live, work, and play. It creates the biggest impact and economic opportunity of our time. update Calagator::Event 1250461326 IEEE Oregon - RAS Design and Philosophy Highly Dynamic Robot Locomotion Roll back

description The members of the Dynamic Robotics Laboratory explore, design, and build robotic systems that move swiftly and can easily handle impacts and kinetic energy transfer. Examples include walking and running robots, force-controlled actuators for delicate tasks such as bomb defusing, lower- and upper-extremity powered prosthetic limbs, exoskeletons for military use or assisted mobility for disabled persons, or catching a ball in the air. Many of these tasks are difficult or impossible for traditional robots due to fundamental limitations of the hardware, such as motor inertia and torque limits. The dynamics of the mechanical system are an inseparable aspect of the behavior of a robot, and can be either a limitation or an asset; thus, our approach integrates the design of the hardware dynamics with the design of the active software controller. Novel actuator designs and mechanisms combined with complementary software controllers can lead to robots that are as dexterous and agile as humans. Speaker(s): Dr. Jonathan Hurst, Agenda: 6:00 Doors open 6:30 Pizza 7:00 Talk begins Location: Room: Room PC401 Bldg: Paul Clayton Building 20000 NW Walker Rd, Beaverton 97006 The members of the Dynamic Robotics Laboratory explore, design, and build robotic systems that move swiftly and can easily handle impacts and kinetic energy transfer. update Calagator::Event 1250464897 CHIFOO Presents: Finding the Awesome in Education feat. Karen Mahon Roll back

description There are hundreds of thousands of apps available in the app store and the numbers are ever increasing. A reasonable percentage of these apps focus on education. But there are few apps that quantify their effectiveness or value for the students who use them or the teachers and parents who purchase them. How can behavioral science, instructional design, gaming and UX/UI design assist in this effort, not only to build products that are effective and fun, but to define these metrics and educate consumers about how to identify them? What makes an app AWESOME and how can we quantify that? Not only in terms of fun, but in terms of teaching kids meaningful stuff! This talk will explore these questions, using example apps to illustrate the relevant features. This event is sponsored by Clarity Innovations, which is paying for non-members to attend for free. Seating is limited, so you should register in advance to be sure you have a seat! There are hundreds of thousands of apps available in the app store and the numbers are ever increasing. description This is Portland's new Unity3D user group. Because Portland desperately needed one. We meet the third Thursday of each month. This is our first meeting at New Relic. Unity is a game engine used primarily to build 3D mobile games, but it's useful for 2D games as well. The engine exports to all sorts of platforms, including iOS, Android and Flash for desktops.
