update Calagator::Event 1250465310 Portland Java User Group (PJUG) Roll back

description ## Stalking the Lost Write: Memory Visibility in Concurrent Java Throughout its 18-year evolution, the Java language has played an industry-leading role in the tricky business of specifying the behavior of concurrent programs. Java's contribution became particularly evident with the introduction of the Java Memory Model (JMM) in Java 1.5. This is an area in which a down-to-the-metal understanding can help developers strike the right balance between safety and performance, so we'll start by motivating the discussion with counterintuitive low-level examples. Then we'll work "up from the weeds" to describe the JMM as a basis for more familiar programming patterns. We'll touch on how C, C++, and C# deal with the same issues and give a nod to functional languages and Java 8. This material can help most developers become more insightful about concurrency issues in their code. Be there or be unsynchronized! ## Stalking the Lost Write: Memory Visibility in Concurrent Java Throughout its 18-year evolution, the Java language has played an industry-leading role in the tricky business of specifying the behavior of concurrent programs. create Calagator::Event 1250465310 Portland Java User Group (PJUG) Roll back

description nil ## Stalking the Lost Write: Memory Visibility in Concurrent Java Throughout its 18-year evolution, the Java language has played an industry-leading role in the tricky business of specifying the behavior of concurrent programs. Be there or be unsynchronized!

update Calagator::Event 1250463753 March PADNUG - Mobile First Responsive Design by Jason Grigsby Roll back

description Mobile first and responsive web design aren’t simply two great tastes that go great together. No they represent much more than that. Mobile first responsive web design is the responsible way to build responsive designs. Mobile first responsive web design is the best way to build something that is both responsive from a layout AND a performance perspective. But if mobile first is the right way to do responsive design, then why are so few people doing it? In this presentation, we’ll dig into why mobile first responsive design matters and the five techniques necessary to make it work. Jason Grigsby was one of the project leads on the Obama iPhone Application and helped design the user interface for the Wall Street Journal’s Blackberry application. He founded and organizes Mobile Portland, a local mobile development user group. Jason built his first web page in 1995. He has spent the last 11 years building web sites professionally before being bitten by the mobile bug prompting him to throw caution to the wind and start a new company focused on mobile and web development. He blogs at CloudFour.com (http://cloudfour.com/) and can be found on Twitter as @grigs (http://twitter.com/grigs). update Calagator::Event 1250464190 Keep Portland Wired! A Tour of Portland’s Tech Community Roll back

description A tour by [Know Your City](http://knowyourcity.org) in conjunction with [The Wild](http://www.thewildevent.org/portland/) *Cost: $25 general/ $20 members* Board the bus for a ride through Portland’s technology industry, including some of the major institutions our city is known for, as well as some of our emerging start ups. Get a behind-the-scenes view of leading tech innovators, and meet some of the leaders who are shaping Portland’s tech future…you’d be crazy to miss it! We’ll start out at Portland Incubator Experiment, a start-up incubator for new, emerging tech businesses. Associated with and housed in the Widen+Kennedy building, the space canopies 8-10 start-ups at a time, helping with the early stages of creating business. We’ll hear about how they’ve created more than $1 million in venture capital and more than 400 jobs, and meet with several of the business owners. At Second Story we’ll get a look at their innovation center for new interactive experiences. Staff will share their work in pushing the boundaries of storytelling across digital channels – including web, mobile and installations. We’ll hear a bit about their history and some of the new groundbreaking projects currently in development. Nike+ Accelerator will provide us with a similar but different view into the world of emerging start-ups. Started just months ago, 10 teams are working with mentors to develop a variety of businesses, many around health, wellness and technology. The program is run by TechStars, a Colorado-based company that has generated more than $275 million in venture capital for clients over the last six years. The tour ends at Free Geek, a nonprofit whose mission is to recycle technology and provide access to computers, the Internet, education, and job skills in exchange for community service. Founded in 2000, the center refurbishes more than 44,000 computers, printers and monitors a year, while recycling 601 tons of materials. We’ll take a quick tour of their thrift store, as well as learn about their hardware grants program, classes and volunteer opportunities. update Calagator::Event 1250464033 Wearables: The future is now Roll back

description In early 2012, Nike introduced FuelBand and Google announced its Glass Project — two events that shined a spotlight on the growing category of Wearable Technology. In the months since, the global design and business community has exploded with speculation on the potential of embedded computing. But they’ve left many questions unanswered: How will wearable technology fit into our daily lives? Is it a passing trend, or the future of computing? Will these kinds of devices bring people closer together, or add to the distractions that battle for our attention? What’s clear is that computers will radically transform over the next five years, from devices we carry to integrated parts of our outfits and bodies, that we use almost without thinking. It’s a shift that will transform markets, and challenge our definition of beauty. Please join us for a talk with local experts, as they discuss their challenges and successes, and explore what the future holds in this exciting field. To save your seat, please register for this event on Eventbrite PANEL MEMBERS Sean Madden – Executive Managing Director, Ziba Design Sean leads multi-disciplinary design teams to produce beautiful, relevant work for clients including Microsoft, Procter & Gamble and Sony. Sean was formerly a Creative Director at frog and professor of Interaction Design at The California College of the Arts’ graduate design program. Roberto Tagliabue – Executive Director Software Design, Jawbone Roberto led development of the UP fitness-tracking wristband for Jawbone, and has designed interactive media, product experiences and brand identity at Nike, Motorola and Razorfish. He founded Visere, a digital design consultancy, and Clibe, a collaborative, cloud-based notebook application. Skooks Pong – Senior Vice President of Technology, Synapse Skooks leads teams of engineers and thinkers in the creation of business solutions for clients such as Apple, Samsung, and Intel. He has more than 20 years experience designing, developing, and delivering prototypes across a broad range of industries. update Calagator::Event 1250465257 Mobile Portland: Intel's Android Tools and Community Roll back

description <p>Because Intel is a hardware company, people often miss the things Intel does on the software side and in particular open source software. Intel is one of the largest contributors to Linux. And it taking up a similar role when it comes to Android.</p> <p>Not only have Intel worked with handset manufacturers to ship phones running on Intel metal and more recently beginning to manufacturer ARM chips as well, but they've been contributors to Android's open source software. They have a ton of tools that developers can use.</p> <p>We're pleased and lucky to have Daniel Holmlund, an engineer working for Intel's Android developer relations, here in Portland to give us an overview of Android development and projects to which Intel contributes. They'll talk what developers need to be aware of when moving an application to an Intel Android devices, and the software tools that Intel creates to analyze and optimize Android applications.</p> <p>In addition, Intel will be giving away t-shirts and you can <strong>enter a raffle to win a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3</strong>. You must be present to win.</p> <p><i>Editor's note: one of the best tricks we've learned for Android development is to use the Intel emulators because they run faster on our Macs than the ARM-based emulators do. We've found it worthwhile to pay attention to what Intel is up to on Android.</i></p> <h3>About <a href="http://twitter.com/Agnathan">Daniel Holmlund</a> </h3> <p><img alt="Daniel Holmlund" src="http://mobileportland.com/sites/default/files/daniel-hat.jpg" style="float: left; margin: 0 10px 10px 0; height: 125px; width: 125px;"> Daniel Holmlund has been a software developer for more than 14 years.
