create Calagator::Event 1250458350 Refresh Portland February: Callie B. Carroll on Assumptions About Users and Accessibility Roll back

description nil Welcome to the 2010 Refresh Portland season! To open up the year, we have Callie B. Carroll, a user experience, usability and accessibility specialist, and humanitarian technologist who speaks both computer and human. Callie will talk about the tricky art of planning for accessibility, where assumptions must be made about users, and these assumptions can create design that is either inclusive or exclusive, with narrow or broad usability. The big question she will address: can you think about users in ways that will help designers and developers create technology that works for everyone, rather than technology that just supports what some see as the disparate groups of “normal” users and “those with disabilities”. Her thesis: When the accessibility of technology (hardware, software, web, and mobile) is considered throughout design, development, and testing, the rewards are systems that provide equal access to functionality, services, and information for their entire range of users.

Speakers, content experts, panels, and workshops will help you improve your strategies for planning and launching effective social ventures. The Forum will create a context to connect, learn, and take action around ideas that lead to tangible change—all in a venue designed for building community. The Forum is intended to attract people with a wide range of experience and backgrounds, but with a common interest—making a difference. If you are getting tired of waiting for someone else to step up to take on issues you care about, come see how this can be a place to make a difference, here or around the world. We invite people from both the business and non-profit community—investors and activists—to join in, work together, and make this a model for other cities to adopt. Learn more about the Forum at www.springboardinnovation.org/forum.php About Springboard Innovation: Springboard Innovation (www.springboardinnovation.org) is a not-for-profit headquartered in Portland, Oregon. Through a process of “innovation incubation” we help community members launch social change organizations and programs. We invite you to be involved in our newest initiative for change.
March 10th 2010 Springboard Social Innovation Forum: Hatch: A New Approach to Incubating Community Innovation Who: Springboard Innovation hosts its monthly Social Innovation Forum on Wednesday, March 10th 2010, from 6-9pm. There is limited space for this month’s event, so RSVP is REQUIRED. What: At the March Springboard Social Innovation we’ll be addressing innovative physical spaces. By creating an active idea laboratory, shared workspace, specifically designed educational programs, appropriate tools, and needed expertise, we can cultivate innovative technology- and service-based solutions to shared problems using newly collaborative, enriched strategies that can be replicated in diverse settings globally. Together MotiveSpace Coalition and Springboard Innovation are creating HATCH, a physical space that will serve as an active laboratory and incubator for community innovation and will foster an entirely new operating system between individuals, organizations, community, tools, and place. The space will offer classrooms, tools, programs, and experts who will work together to solve local and global problems. Tenants of all sectors will work in close proximity in a shared work space that fosters collaboration, community, and participation to generate social and ecological solutions. Join in the conversation and talk with us about HATCH! Join us for a “working Forum,” where we’ll discuss HATCH and the potential role a physical space can play in solving social and environmental problems. Mark your calendars now and RSVP today! Space is limited. Learn more about the Forum at www.springboardinnovation.org/forum.php When: March 10, 2010 5:30 Doors Open; appetizers, drinks and networking 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. Discussion and Workshops Where: Springboard Innovation’s NEW office Olympic Mills Commerce Center 107 SE Washington Portland, OR 97214 Cost: $10, snacks and drinks included RSVP and Contact: Please contact Mary Grace at (503) 452- 6898 or marygrace@springboardinnovation.org for more information about this event and to RSVP. create Calagator::Event 1250458345 PDX Tweetup Breakfast - The Elvis, Evolved. Roll back

description nil I could say that we're going there because it's right next to little c's school, and thus incredibly easy for me to reach. I could cite the fact that they have bacon-cheddar biscuits AND corn/bacon muffins on a regular (dare I say constant) basis. I could mention the other lovely pastries. Or I could point out that, as the replacement to the beloved Sydney's cafe, the place is the only waystation for web workers for miles around. But none of that matters. Here's why we're going: "Grilled peanut butter and honey with sliced bananas on sourdough." Om nom nom nom. As always, buy your own breakfast and join us at the big table in the middle of the place (or the banquette if we can jam enough tables together).

description nil A polyglot programming group meeting in the heart of The Beave. We seem to talk a lot about oddball programming languages and their features. And the usual geekery you'd expect from a programmer's group. This month we'll have a talk by Eric Wilhelm: "Perl 6: What you've missed in the last $n years." I will present an overview of the Perl 6 project, a snapshot of recent development, and samples of what you can do with Rakudo Perl 6 now.
