###The future of robotics
Robots have been in our minds for ages. Our imagination has been fed by science fiction, movies, books. But where are the robots to be seen today? You might wonder.
At Aldebaran, we’ve been making robots for the last 10 years. Programmable humanoid robots. Social robots. Robots that don’t focus on performance but rather on interacting with people. We get the feeling they are the ultimate interface. But what are they useful for? How do they work? And more importantly: why should you pay attention to them?
In this presentation, we'll invite Pepper on stage to do some demos, we’ll discuss software, hardware, sensors and emotions, we’ll share our vision about the future of robotics, and as much as we can, we’ll try to answer all the questions you have about this new species that will soon take over the world.
### Speaker:
Nicolas Rigaud joined Aldebaran four years ago as a community manager, after spending 9 years in the media industry.
He is now developers advocate and manages relations with external developer communities. He’s strongly convinced that robots will change our lives in the years to come, and keep spreading the word all over the world. He's been talking at a range of events around the world (JavaOne, Devoxx, JFokus) and was awarded JavaOne RockStar in 2015. |

Please submit your proposal <a href="https://goo.gl/forms/TCzP1g6urI">here</a></p> <p>We also invite you to join our Slack room for discussion and help around React amongst your community. Join here: <a href="https://portlandreactjs.herokuapp.com/">Portland ReactJS Slack</a></p> <p>Looking forward to seeing you all next week!</p> <p><b>-=== Proposed Schedule ===-</b></p> <p><br><i>Zoe Landon</i></p> <p><b>Redux Middleware - </b>Our team at Marketo has been working on a substantial front-end project with a React-based stack. Between business logic, desired safeties, and simple developer taste, we've had to write a fair bit of Redux middleware. I'll walk through the process, using the open sourced redux-action-router as an example.</p> <p><br><i>Toby Fee</i></p> <p><b><i>Postgres and React: a match made in heaven - </i></b>Postgres with its support for the JSON datatype is a great way to store complex objects, but if you're accessing this information without using the joins, filtering, and complex array matching that Postgres has to offer, you're probably missing out on a lot of security and performance.</p> <p><br>Toby will go over some basic postgres setup for beginners, then transition into a real-world case where a react frontend was sending very complex JSON into a database that the developer was having trouble accessing again later.</p> <p><br><i>There will also be time for lightning talks, so come prepared for that too!</i></p> <p><br><b>-=== Event Details ===-</b></p> <p><br><a href="http://newrelic.com/">New Relic</a> has graciously offered their event space to host our meeting this month. Food will also be provided by <a href="http://www.idealist.org">Idealist.org</a>,<b> please come at 6pm to enjoy some dinner and socializing. </b>If you are new to the group, welcome! We hope that you find this community a friendly and open one. To new and existing members, please take a look at the <a href="https://github.com/portland-react-js/meetup/blob/master/code-of-conduct.md">code of conduct</a> for our group.</p> <p>The presentation will start promptly at 6:30.</p> |

Ladies Drawing Night
Roll back
| description |

All you ladies who like to draw, come on out! Bring whatever you are working on, we'll have table space for working, but bring the supplies that you'll need.
I've been drawing daily for the past six months or so, but I've started to crave chatting with others and getting inspired by seeing what other people are creating, so I created an event to make that happen. |

<p>We hope you enjoyed our first event and introduction to the great programs at Boys & Girls Clubs. We certainly enjoyed meeting everyone who could attend! Our next event will be June 15th at our Inukai Family Club in Hillsboro, OR from 11:30AM-1:30PM.</p> <p>To mix things up, in addition to lunch and an optional Club tour, we will have stations where you can try the activities our members participate in as part of our STEM programs. Come try your hand at powering a lightbulb with a KidWind Challenge or create a video game with Scratch and CS First. Our staff will be manning the stations to answer questions you may have about our programs and how you can get involved.</p> <p>Even if you attended our first event we encourage you to come and see what it’s like to be a kid in the Club!</p> <p>We look forward to seeing familiar and new faces and please let us know if you have any questions.</p> <p>If you would like to apply to volunteer at any Portland Boys and Girls Club, please check out our STEM and other opportunities at: <a href="http://bgcportland.org/volunteer/individual-volunteer-opportunities/"></a><a href="http://bgcportland.org/volunteer/individual-volunteer-opportunities/" class="linkified">http://bgcportland.org/volunteer/individual-volunteer-opportunities/</a></p> <p>Hope to see you there!</p> <p>The BGC Portland team</p> |
