Have you ever been part of a team where people just didn't seem to be working together? Maybe you didn't even know each others' names? Perhaps you report into different parts of the organization and get pulled in different directions?
Good news! There's plenty of research about the characteristics that indicate a group is a team.
Come on down to Ringlers' next month to tell your stories and troubleshoot your situation with your agile friends at the pub!
We start on time and end on time. You're welcome to come early and stay late to chat. Feel free to order when you come in so we don't slam the kitchen. RSVP's are preferred but not required. |

<p>Happy New Year Legal Innovators!</p> <p>We're looking to kick off 2018 with a Feb 8 meetup featuring local legal technology product Tali, a voice-assistant-based time tracking tool for lawyers and other professionals. We'll hear from Matt Volm, one of Tali's creators, to talk about Tali's startup journey so far, what he's learned about working with lawyers, and what advice he has for lawyers and other technologists looking to build legal tech products.</p> <p>Tali currently works with Amazon Alexa and will be expanding to Microsoft Cortana and Google Assistant later this year. See <a href="https://www.telltali.com/" class="linkified">https://www.telltali.com/</a> for more.</p> <p>We're also hoping to spend some time with Andrew Schpak, current president of the Multnomah Bar Association, to talk about a possible Legal-themed Hackathon that the MBA is mulling.</p> <p>Oh, and there will be Pizza courtesy of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe!</p> <p>Hope you can make it!</p> <p>--John</p> <p>P.S. We're looking for folks to help organize more Legal Innovation Meetups in 2018. If you have an idea for a topic, a speaker, or would be able to help organize a specific session, please let me know!</p> |

PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) Why Gender-Inclusive Software Matters to Everyone
Roll back
| description |
*Seating is limited, please plan to arrive early to ensure a seat!*
We are hosting an event to further the cause of inclusivity, focused on gender. By attending, you’ll earn talking points about why gender-inclusive software matters to your business, to our society, and to everyone. You will leave with an idea of how to achieve it in your own software with a practical and freely available method called GenderMag. We will also discuss ideas about how you can help make software more inclusive to diversity of thought. This event is suitable for anyone who helps shape software (software managers, software developers, UXers, tech CEOs, tech CIOs, ...)
About the speaker: Margaret Burnett is an OSU Distinguished Professor at Oregon State University. She began her career in industry, where she was the first woman software developer ever hired at Procter & Gamble Ivorydale. A few degrees and shattered glass ceilings later, she joined academia, with a research focus on people who are engaged in some form of software development. Burnett is an ACM Distinguished Scientist, a member of the ACM CHI Academy, and an award-winning mentor. She is also on the Academic Alliance Advisory Board of the National Center for Women In Technology (NCWIT).

We'll meet in the Ecotrust Alder Room. Enter the atrium of the Ecotrust building from either side. Feel free to bring food and/or beer up with you from Hot Lips or Laughing Planet! Walk up the inside stairs along the East Wall or take the elevator to the second floor. The Alder Room entrance is right behind the Ecotrust front desk. We'll have the gate open for at least the first part of the meeting. If it's not open, call Tanya at 503-475-7833 or just yell through the gate at us :-) |

Portland State University (PSU) welcomes employers to attend the last STEM Career + Volunteer Fair of the academic year. Fairs are widely publicized throughout campus and are attended by both students and alumni.
PSU is recognized as a leading urban research university. Employers with opportunities in STEM fields are invited to register for this fair and connect with STEM students and alumni. This could be a great time to start hiring for summer interns!
To maintain the focus on post-graduate development and employment, we accept registrations from employers and PSU-affiliated graduate schools only. |

Bitcoin 101: The Basics
Roll back
| description |
nil |

• What we'll do
The price of Bitcoin has sky-rocketed this year as global adoption continues to trend upward, as more governments recognize it as currency, and as impoverished populations seek refuge in an uncensorable, free-to-access, and relatively stable global payment network. Yet, Bitcoin's biggest strength is also its biggest weakness: there is no centralized authority in Bitcoin. While this fact is majorly (r)evolutionary, it also means that it can be hard to know where to find reliable information. Join us for this introductory workshop to learn the basics:
- What is Bitcoin?
- What makes Bitcoin unique?
- How to choose the best wallet for you
- How to buy your first bits of a bitcoin
- Resources and tools for expanding your knowledge
- Q & A
Phoenyx Guyton has a degree in Global Economic Systems and International Business, and has been a student of decentralized systems, social movements, and cryptocurrencies for many years. She co-founded a Bitcoin consulting business 4 years ago, has written many helpful guides, and is currently writing a book about Bitcoin. (Note: She is not a financial adviser and will not be giving financial or investment advice.)
Bitcoin encouraged; PayPal, Venmo, SquareCash, and cash accepted. No one turned away for lack of funds.
Tickets are $5 at the door, no one is turned away.

There are excellent free course lectures and materials online, and from January 6th 2018 to April[masked] we'll go through all the contents.</p> <p>In order to cater to a diverse audience, there will be 3 structured sessions every Saturday – you can attend all, some or none, it’s totally up to you! If you don’t want to attend some of the sessions, throughout the day there will be open hacking on creating open-source code implementations of the top research paper pre-prints that week. <p>Presentations begin at 6:30pm. We feature 2 awesome speakers that bring you the best that Portland (and beyond) has to offer in Node & JavaScript. Periodically we'll open with a brief lightning talk too.</p> <p>Open dialogue during the presentations is very welcome–we're all here to learn!</p> <p>Come a little early and say hi! The organizers will be available to help any newcomers with getting started. If you need help installing node and npm, or have questions or anything–please reach out.</p> <p>Before our first talk we'll engage in a friendly Node quiz! Prizes include awesome learning materials sponsored by Cloudflare (eg. Books like "Effective JavaScript" by David Herman, and "Node.js in Action" by Harter, Cantelon, Rajlich, and Holowaychuk).</p> <p>Our talks cover a variety of topics, presented by people with varying levels of experience. Some of our most recent speakers have been: Max Ogden, Substack, Chris Dickinson, Ben Acker, and more.</p> <p>Afterwards, if you're stoked to keep hangin' we regularly take our discussions onward to post-talk drinks nearby! We may even hack a little if the night is young!</p> <p>People who're new to programming and new friends to the Node community are very welcome! Say hi, make some noise, get to know folks, and ask questions!</p> <p>Brief note about our location:</p> <p>Please look for Nodesters standing by the door to let you in if it's locked! If you arrive beyond 6:35pm, please shoot us a tweet at @pdxnode, and we'll come as soon as we can to let you in. :)</p> |
