<p>Details<br>Same place, still looking for speakers. If you have anything you would like to present, let me know!</p> <p>If you need parking, there's a parking deck below Safeway.</p> <p>Agenda:</p> <p>6:00 p.m.: Food, beverage, and networking</p> <p>6:40 p.m.: Welcome message by Karl Fezer</p> <p>6:45 p.m: Speaker 1: "Transfer Learning, or How to Stand on the Shoulders of Giants" - James DiPadua<br>7:30 p.m: Speaker 2: "Quantum Mechanics for Modeling Composite Semantic Spaces" - Connor Favreau<br>8:15 p.m.- 8:30: Project Ideas. Pitch your Project Ideas to this meetup group</p> <p>8:30: End</p> <p>Speaker 1 Details:</p> <p>Abstract:</p> <p>There's been a mountain of research into Deep Neural Networks' practical applications in image, audio and text processing. But these deep networks are often built on large corpuses of data (such as ImageNet or Wikipedia).</p> <p>But that may not apply directly to your domain. Gathering data specific to your problem space may not only be a lengthy process but an expensive one too. That makes the business win a hard sell.</p> <p>Transfer Learning can dramatically eliminate many of those problems, quickly.</p> <p>In 'How to stand on the shoulders of giants,' we'll discuss the research background into Transfer Learning and how to implement the process in either Keras or PyTorch. The goal is for listeners to feel comfortable with the concept and prepared to begin researching an application in their workspaces.</p> <p>Bio:</p> <p>James is a wanderer, tinkerer, and ponderer. Not one to be pinned down, he's more comfortable in the abstract than in the known. He embraces ambiguity with a bearhug. That's a trick of course. He bear hugs the ambiguity into little mathematical boxes and then says "Dance!" and, oh, how that ambiguity dances! James currently hangs his hat at Vacasa where he works as a Senior Data Scientist tackling a myriad of growth-objectives with engineering and machine learning.</p> <p>Speaker 2 Details:</p> <p>Five years ago, Word2Vec offered a leap forward for the average data scientist to perform efficient algorithms in Natural Language Processing. From a body of text, Word2Vec generates a semantic space, in which the trained word vectors are often highly associated with their meaning. The next leap, a semantic space for phrases and sentences, proves tougher both computationally and in faithfully representing a composite meaning over multiple words. Surprisingly, quantifying particle interactions a la quantum mechanics shares close mathematical similarity to quantifying the meaning of words, phrases, and sentences. In this talk, I will provide an overview of current techniques in modeling language past word vectors, as well as point out the quantum mechanical aspects of these techniques. Emphasis will be placed on the “Compositional Distributional Semantics” model for the task of identifying word ambiguity."</p> |

<p>Presentations begin at 6:30pm. We feature 2 awesome speakers that bring you the best that Portland (and beyond) has to offer in Node & JavaScript. Periodically we'll open with a brief lightning talk too.</p> <p>Open dialogue during the presentations is very welcome–we're all here to learn!</p> <p>Come a little early and say hi! The organizers will be available to help any newcomers with getting started. If you need help installing node and npm, or have questions or anything–please reach out.</p> <p>Before our first talk we'll engage in a friendly Node quiz! Prizes include awesome learning materials sponsored by Cloudflare (eg. Books like "Effective JavaScript" by David Herman, and "Node.js in Action" by Harter, Cantelon, Rajlich, and Holowaychuk).</p> <p>Our talks cover a variety of topics, presented by people with varying levels of experience. Some of our most recent speakers have been: Max Ogden, Substack, Chris Dickinson, Ben Acker, and more.</p> <p>Afterwards, if you're stoked to keep hangin' we regularly take our discussions onward to post-talk drinks nearby! We may even hack a little if the night is young!</p> <p>People who're new to programming and new friends to the Node community are very welcome! Say hi, make some noise, get to know folks, and ask questions!</p> <p>Brief note about our location:</p> <p>Please look for Nodesters standing by the door to let you in if it's locked! If you arrive beyond 6:35pm, please shoot us a tweet at @pdxnode, and we'll come as soon as we can to let you in. :)</p> |

<p>Hello, this is our monthly informal meetup for the Portland QS community. The idea is for us to get together and talk about what we are working on and learning from our data and self-experiments.</p> <p>There won't be formal talks, but if you want to show others what you are working on, there will be a projector on hand.</p> <p>Food and drinks are going to be potluck style. If you can, bring something that you can share with others. It doesn't need to be elaborate. A simple snack is great.</p> <p>Looking forward to seeing what you are up to!</p> |

Git is well over a decade old and still reigns King and is a de Facto Standard for many good reasons. Join us for an Intro to Git workshop where you will learn the basics of this powerful version-control tool.
We will walk through setting up a project on GitHub and will be using the command line to step through and understand a series of commands typically seen in a common workflow "Feature Branch".
At the end of the night you should have a general understanding of Git as a tool and how to use it from the command line to maintain proper version control of your code.
Bring your laptop and if you haven't already:

Failing Fast for Women
Roll back

The workshop, Failing Fast for Women, explores the relationship between gender socialization, avoidance of risk taking, and the internalization of failure. It provides a number of skills and strategies to increase risk taking and avoid personalizing failure, and is suitable for all female-identified folks.
The event is on November 16th from 9 to 5 at the Nightwood Society. It’s created and hosted by the Alveare Collective, a community of professional women in Portland who are working to rethink risk-taking in the workplace and personal realms.. I have ten reduced price tickets available. The reduced cost is $97 and includes all-day catering.
To register, go to https://guestli.st/572295 and then select "Early Bird non-profit/academic/independent" and then enter promo code Nov16. |

Creating Interactive Software Objects with Clojurescript w/ Dan Lidral-Porter
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
For a few years, I've been trying to create UIs that have a consistency,
tangibility, and predictability akin to that of physical objects. I
think this results in software that is easy for the average person to
use and understand.
The only way I know how to describe the kinds of behaviors that result
in the physicality I seek is with state machines. I've built a library
called Plastic that lets me define state machines composed of pure
functions triggered by DOM events. This allows me to express the
behaviors making up the UI in almost exactly the same way I design them
with pen and paper, all the while hiding mutation in the implementation
in fine Clojurian fashion.
In this talk I'll describe my philosophy of UI design in more detail,
provide some examples of the physicality I'm aiming for, and show how
one is implemented using Plastic. If time and enthusiasm allows, we can
collaboratively define another simple software object using Plastic on
the fly, to get a bottom-up perspective in addition to the top-down
perspective of the scripted talk.
I hope to see you there.
-DLP
P.S. I am amused to be delivering a talk in defense of objects, but
these are strange times we live in. |

Developing Tomorrow's Managers
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Join us the afternoon of November 7th for a session that will help guide stellar individual contributors who now find themselves leading a team of peers. As our tech community thrives and grows at lightning speed, keeping talent happy and giving them development opportunities is an important way to stay above the hiring competition. As individual employs excel, promotions are an obvious next step, but what happens when you promote a high performing individual contributor to lead a team without the tools to manage?
Tech Leaders - give your high performers more than a raise and title change and encourage their attendance at this event where they can chat among peers and thought leaders as they venture into the new (to them) realm of management. Consider attending yourself as well to guide your future staff promotions with the tools they need to succeed.
New or Developing Managers - join us for this session and a chance to network with others who are moving through similar pain points of the individual contributor who is now the team lead. Our suggested topics will evolve based on attendee feedback, so please leave comments on areas you’d like to discuss at this event upon registering.
Sample discussions planned for this session:
--fielding personality conflicts within teams
dealing with difficult conversations among employees
-managing your manager
-shifting your development focus from product to people

Bottleneck: Getting connected more efficiently
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
What if once a month, one of us agreed to block a couple of hours for a series of 10 minute meetings with folks who have been trying to get on your calendar?
I know, crazy right? No wait. There’s more. What if this block of meetings occurred at a coffee shop or maybe even a bar?
Still with me? Because here’s where it gets wacky.
What if we all showed up at that same place those meetings were happening? Because we were invited. Not because it was random or something. And we invited other community members to hang out there too, like a happy hour. Then we ask the folks having meetings to do their homework to make the meeting efficient, to show up early for their meeting time, and to stay late so they get to meet more people — and get connected more quickly. It might even be that in the middle of one of our 10 min meetings, we could just point at someone in the crowd and be like “That’s the person you need to talk to, right there.”
In my head, I’ve been calling the “Bottleneck.” Because that’s what I am. And that’s what I’m trying to solve for. And I thought it might be a solution that could work for you. And our community. And I’m down to beta test it as the meeting-haver if a few of you are willing to join me as the happy hour-ers. |
