Join us for a mixer of people working across various interaction design (IxD) disciplines. This kickoff event is an opportunity for us to talk more about the work people are doing without slides or speakers.
If you're a long-time member of the interaction design community in Portland, find yourself new without a network, or simply want to talk about what's going on, here's your chance to get connected!
We'll use this as an opportuntiy to discuss topics we might use for future meetings, learn what types of work people are doing in the community, and amplify efforts to broaden the interaction design community throughout Portland. |

Dark Patterns are tricks used in websites and apps that make you buy or sign up for things that you didn't mean to. Designers and developers often abdicate our responsibility to remove deceptive patterns from design. In this talk, we'll explore some dark patterns, talk about how it parallels with older industry practices, and what we should do about before it's too late to fix.
We'll also use this as an opportunity to meet others working across interaction design disciplines.

## Details

- Nametags and pronoun stickers will be available at check-in.
- Donut.js logo stickers and enamel pins also available at check-in.
- All talks are live-captioned by Mirabai Knight of Steno Knight.
- Two all-gender, stall-only restrooms are available.
- Event is on the second floor. Elevator is available.
- 3.5′-wide physical access lanes will be taped on the floor throughout the venue.
- We'll have donuts! We have donuts for omnivores from Delicious Donuts and combination gluten-free-vegan donuts from Back to Eden Bakery.
- A few other snacks (pretzels, vegan+gluten-free chips) will be available.
- LaCroix soda and water will be available.

Whether you work for a manufacturing company, work in an office, or provide customer service, Six Sigma can help you solve important and challenging problems within your organization, using a structured approach and data analysis.
In this Six Sigma primer we’ll address:
- How the DMAIC model and analysis tools increase the chance of solving problems
- The different Six Sigma belt certification levels (Yellow, Green, Black and Master Black Belt)
- Popular analysis tools such as graphical tools, designed experiments (DOE), measurement studies, statistical process control, regression analysis and statistical software
- How Six Sigma compares to Lean
- Examples of Six Sigma applied to sustainability (environmental and social)
- Exercises for measuring time and conducting experiments

Roots of Six Sigma
In 1986, engineers Bill Smith & Mikel J Harry introduced Six Sigma within Motorola, as a way to improve business performance, and make it easier for employees to utilize effective quality improvement tools.
Why did Motorola come up with this program? It all began in the late 1970s, when a Japanese firm took over a Motorola factory that manufactured television sets in the United States. The Japanese promptly set about making drastic changes to the way the factory operated by reducing the variation from product to product. The factory was soon producing TV sets with 1/20th the number of defects they had produced under Motorola management, and this translated to fewer warranty claims and customer complaints.
Six Sigma refers to the ability of processes to produce a very high proportion of output within specification (without defects or errors). Processes that operate with "six sigma quality" over the short term are assumed to produce long-term defect levels below 3.4 defects per million opportunities.
After Motorola achieved tremendous quality improvements, the popularity spread to other companies. Jack Welch, CEO of General Electric (GE) made it integral to his business strategy in 1995, requiring his managers to achieve Green Belt certification if they wanted to get promoted.
By the late 1990s, about two-thirds of the Fortune 500 organizations had begun Six Sigma initiatives with the aim of reducing costs and improving quality. Today, Six Sigma continues to be practiced and implemented within many manufacturing, banking, healthcare, service and financial organizations.

<p>Agile is part of an evolution in consciousness--in the nature of our awareness and noticing skills and our knowledge of self and other. When agile emerges in an organization, it does so within a consciousness unlike its own. Yet, our approaches to agility often impede its ability to stick where it emerges.</p> <p>Agilists have used the frames of mindset and learning. But, we need to use the frames of consciousness and development in order to truly transform. In doing so, we see agile transformations are actually personal transformations. Organizations don't change, people change and then the organization adapts.</p> <p>This deep dive session discusses the agile mindset and puts “mindset” in the context of “consciousness.” It speaks to advancing agilists who are trying to understand why adoptions go wrong when they have done everything "right." You are more likely to receive full value in this session if you have been pursuing agility within organisations for at least three years.</p> <p>This session provides pointers on how to spot developmental as opposed to lower level learning experiences. It is based on my own practice, on research I did for my master’s thesis, and on my book The Preservation of the Agile Heart: From Mindset to Consciousness.</p> <p>Learning Outcomes:</p> <p>· Be able to articulate a working definition of consciousness<br>· Understand the difference between mindset and consciousness<br>· Understand how consciousness and human development align<br>· Understand the difference between learning and development<br>· Be able to spot learning opportunities that do not facilitate development<br>· Be able to create opportunities for personal development and self-care in the context of development</p> <p>About the Presenter:</p> <p>Jean Richardson is a consultant and coach with nearly 30 years of experience in software development, with half of that time spent in learning about agile and participating in the agile movement. The mob programming workshop is a risk free, safe space for you to learn and experiment with this energizing and effective way of creating software!</p> <p>Mob Programming is a software development practice with many benefits - it raises code quality, removes knowledge silos, minimizes mental fatigue, and more. In practice it feels more like a bulldozer than a racecar - unstoppable and thorough.</p> <p>The core of mob programming is pointing many pairs of eyes on a single problem, pushing all the code through a single keyboard. Each month we'll explore different methods for learning to mob well and reaping the rewards of this practice as soon as possible on your own team.</p> <p>Directions: The building you are looking for is on 2nd and Taylor (look for the Starbucks on the ground floor).
