create Calagator::Event 1250476228 PDX Exploit Workshop Roll back

description nil Hey everybody. Got a bug you just can't land? Is there a recent CVE you've been eyeballing seductively? Just want to brush up on your APPSEC or OPSEC? Do none of the above questions make any sense, but you're interested in computer security? PDX Exploit Workshop is the longest running security meetup in Portland (10 years!). It's an open, self driven event for people interested in computer security. Whether you're a novice or career professional, all are welcome. It's always a good time to learn about security! We spend this dedicated time each week researching and exploring topics of software and hardware security as well as working on personal and group projects. Occasionally we have presentations on our findings. Bring a willingness to learn, a curiosity about security, and/or a specific area of interest to share with others. This group meets in the PDX Hackerspace mainspace which has comfy seating, deluxe wifi (thanks Kyle!), Club Mate soda in the snack shack, and hackable LED displays to play around with. p.s. This event is open to everyone! No ^H membership is required to attend. All are welcome. That means you!

create Calagator::Event 1250476227 GraphQLPDX - AWS AppSync Roll back

description nil Tonight we have a presentation on using GraphQL with AWS AppSync by Ryan Jones. There will also be plenty of time before and after the talk to converse with other GraphQL'ers. Talk: How to leverage AWS AppSync to reduce backend complexity Details: In this talk, we will dive into AWS AppSync a fully managed GraphQL solution provided by AWS. Which allows you to hook into "resolvers" such as AWS DynamoDB a NoSQL database or AWS Lambda a cloud function that can handle complex business logic. Speaker: Ryan Jones is the Founder & CEO of a cloud development shop called Serverless Guru here in Portland. He got his start as a cloud developer in the Nike Innovation Engineering department before transitioning to a cloud consulting company and then started Serverless Guru in March of 2018. Serverless Guru helps companies build scalable and cost-effective applications on the cloud. Want to give a lightning talk on GraphQL? Connect with Daniel in the comments or @dslemay on Twitter. It's a super low key group and we all have knowledge to share.

create Calagator::Event 1250476226 PDXWIT Presents: Experienced Women in Tech Roll back

description nil ***Registration through Eventbrite ***https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdxwit-presents-experienced-women-in-tech-tickets-73707568321*** is required to gain entry to this event.*** Are you a woman with 15 or more years of experience working in technology? Do you want to spend time with other women in tech who understand your point of view as someone who has been in this industry for a while? PDXWIT’s Experienced Women in Tech events work to foster a community for women like you. Ageism is alive and well in business in general, and perhaps even more so in tech. With many colleagues younger than you—including your boss—you may feel marginalized, unseen, or feel your skills are not as valued as they should be. Join us on November 12th at Planet Argon for an evening dedicated to bringing experienced women in tech together to talk through these challenges. Our focus is on sharing ways we find success in our companies despite potential ageism, and on showing the value we bring through our experience. The evening will involve some initial discussion, breaking out into small groups to brainstorm ideas, then coming back together as a group to share ideas and conclude our discussion. Susy Dunn and Lois Brooks, both highly respected women from tech HR, will share lessons they have learned and seen as they participate as guest facilitators for the evening. Agenda: 5:30 p.m. - Doors Open & networking 6:00 p.m. - Introductions 6:10 p.m. - Group event followed by sharing of take-away points 7:15 p.m. - Wrap-up and networking 7:30 p.m. - Event ends Event FAQ Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms? A: We share bathrooms with other businesses on our floor, so we unfortunately cannot change the restrooms to gender-neutral. Q: Is the space ADA accessible? A: Yes. Q: Will there be food and drink at this event? A: Yes, and vegan and gluten-free options will be available. Q: What is the parking situation? A: No, but street parking is ample in the surrounding area. Q: Is there any special information that might help me find the entrance? A: You can enter the building through the glass door to the left of Bread & Honey Cafe on Vancouver. Then take the elevator to the 3rd floor, and find our office on the left. The first-floor glass door will lock at 6:30 Q: Is there secured bike parking? A: No, but bike parking is available outside the building. Q: Should I consider using public transportation? A: Yes. Q: Can I bring my dog? A: No, we ask that you leave your furry friend home. There may be an office pet here, but likely not after hours. Our office is dog-friendly during the day. Purpose: PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women. Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome.

create Calagator::Event 1250476212 Portland Premiere: Chasing Grace Ep #2: Progress & the Power of Community Roll back

description nil Please join the Chasing Grace Project for the Portland premiere of Episode #2: Progress & the Power of Community. It will be screened as a double feature with Episode #1: Eighty Twenty and include the expanding Chasing Grace Project photo exhibit Persistence. Thanks to the generous support of this event's exclusive sponsor New Relic, the event is free to attend. Doors open at 5 p.m., and show begins at 6 p.m. Please arrive early for the best seats and to enjoy the photo exhibit. This second episode in the series of six originally premiered at the Saturday Night Live studio at 30 Rock in New York but will be seen for the first time by the Portland community at this special event. The Chasing Grace series launched in Portland, Ore., home to the executive producer, writer and director Jennifer Cloer, with the premiere of Episode #1: Eighty Twenty in March 2018. Both episode #1 and #2 feature women from Portland. Episode #2 explores whether or not we're making progress in the fight for equality in the tech industry and how the role of community is helping to elevate women in their careers and support them in speaking out and challenging the status quo. The trailer can be viewed here: https://vimeo.com/356736419 The Chasing Grace Project is a docuseries of six episodes that seeks to build a more inclusive and transparent culture in tech and to recruit and retain women to help build the future. It was created by Portland-based filmmaker Jennifer Cloer. If we don’t have everyone at the table today, we risk living in a less inclusive world tomorrow. The Project also gives women a platform to be seen and heard for their experiences. Stories are exclusively our own and have the power to change culture and transform others. It is supported by Boeing, Cloud Foundry Foundation, Cloud Native Computing Foundation, Cloudability, Comcast NBCUniversal, eBay, Gorge Tech Alliance, Intel, New Relic, OpenStack, PDXWIT, Red Hat, The Linux Foundation and Women in Cable & Telecommunications (WICT). It is produced by reTHINKit Media. chasinggracefilm.com

create Calagator::Event 1250476209 PDXPUG: Sharding large MySQL databases with Vitess Roll back

description nil This month I am going to be talking about my current work on sharding large mysql databases with Vitess. My team has been on a journey towards splitting our largest mysql databases and I want to share my experiences and lessons learned. We are going to look at the problems and possible solutions to scaling reads and writes in relational databases. Vitess is an open source project born at youtube to scale their largest and most critical databases. It has been adopted in as a Cloud Native Compute Foundation incubator project. With PostgreSQL on the medium-term road map, let’s take a look at what we have been able to do with mysql. Hi its me Grant. I work on the database engineering team at New Relic. I’ve been using Postgres in production since 9.2. I co-organize the Postgres user group in Portland with Mark Wong.
