The official CiviCode Day is postponed for a bit, but why not meet up and talk about what you're doing with local data sets anyhow? We'll do some informal show & tell for anyone with a project already started, then people can team up to explore the data or work on app ideas. |

iPad Design and User Experience -- Mobile Portland
Roll back
| description |

Before the iPad launched, we convened a panel of experts to help examine what the iPad would mean for businesses, entrepreneurs and developers. The panel was a hit and the conversation continued into the evening.
By popular demand, we're bringing James Keller, one of the panelists, back to talk about what we got right and what we got wrong when it comes to the iPad.
In particular, James's will focus on the most compelling and interesting aspect of the iPad: the way we interact with the device.
We'll examine how the iPad's user interface design works, what we've learned from Apple's own applications, and how other applications are taking advantage of the form factor.
About James
James Keller is a digital communications strategist and user experience evangelist at Small Society, a small agency based in Portland with a passion for the iPhone⢠platform, dedicated to helping organizations bring great ideas to life. Before joining the Small Society team, James was at Wieden+Kennedy helping the Portland office align client business goals and brand experiences with emerging technologies.
Leveraging her extensive knowledge of interaction design, business analysis, campaign analytics, and integrated marketing communications, she has led multiple teams in creating efficient and effective online strategies for top brands such as Coca-Cola, NIKE, Procter & Gamble, Leviâs, LAIKA Studio, Zipcar, and the MTV Networks.
She can frequently be seen at conferences speaking on topics such as information architecture, social media, and convergent culture. |

Galois Tech Talk
Roll back

Galois is pleased to host the following tech talk. These talks are open to the interested public. Please join us!
The talk will be held at
Galois Inc.
421 SW 6th Ave. Suite 300, Portland, OR, USA
(3rd floor of the Commonwealth building)
Visualizing Information Flow through C Programs
Details:
* Presenter: Joe Hurd
* Date: Tuesday April 27, 2010
* Time: 10:30am
Abstract: The aim of the Automated Security Analysis project is to determine whether the information flows in a realistically-sized C codebase can be automatically deduced and communicated in an understandable way to someone unfamiliar with the code. To test this, a new information flow static analysis and visualization technique were developed, and implemented in a research prototype tool. This talk will present the novel features of the static analysis and demonstrate how the results are shown in the visualization tool: information flow between program storage locations is decomposed into two compositional properties, which can be computed using sound abstract interpretation techniques. For each deduced information flow, the static analysis keeps track of a set of source code locations which demonstrate the information flow, and this is used by the visualization component to communicate the information flow to a user browsing the source code.
Bio: Joe Hurd, Ph.D. is a Formal Methods Engineer at Galois, Inc. For the past ten years Dr. Hurd has been applying theorem proving techniques to formally verify the correctness of complex software, including probabilistic programs, elliptic curve cryptography and game tree analysis algorithms. He is also the developer of Metis, an automatic theorem prover for first order logic, and coordinates the OpenTheory project, a package management system for higher order logic theories. Dr. Hurd is an active member of the theorem proving research community, having organized conferences in 2005 and 2008, given invited talks, and regularly appears on program committees and reviews papers for conferences and journals. Prior to joining Galois in 2007, Dr. Hurd was a research fellow at Magdalen College, University of Oxford. He studied at the University of Cambridge, receiving a Masters level degree in Mathematics in 1997, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science in 2002. |

#pdxbreakfast returns to the scene of the crime this Thursday with a breakfast at Fuller's Restaurant. We were not completely out of west side choices, but I was waffling (heh - breakfast humor) so I opted for the old standby at the request/suggestion of one Bryan Stearns.
As always, buy your own breakfast and have a gab. |

You're encouraged to bring a computer, but can team up with others that brought one too.
Afterwards, the group descends on the 12th and Hawthorne foodcart pod for additional nourishment.
Also, many people meet up at the pub during the same time as the hackathon to play boardgames they bring which you're welcomed to play. |

Roll back
| description |

→ |
Come do strange things with computers amongst others whilst drinking fine Portland beer. Look for the row of geeks with computers in the back of the main room.
All programming languages welcome. Come work on your own projects, work on others participants' projects, get advice, have fun, etc.

Beer & Blog/Timbers Army TweetUp
Roll back
| description |

→ |
As successfully executed last season, a Beer-and-Blog tweetup at a Portland Timbers match. The team is moving up to MLS next season, and the crowds are immense and rowdy and fun. Meet before the match for a beer at the Bitter End Pub or Cheerful Bullpen Tavern, then buy a general admission ticket at the gate and make your way to the North End of the stadium, where the Timbers Army reigns. (A good meetup spot is in the bleachers ABOVE the Army.) Afterparty = Koi Fusion/Spudnik carts at NW 20th and Burnside, then the Bitter End Pub. See you there! |

AgilePDX meeting
Roll back
| description |
Our regular monthly meeting. Topic TBD. |
→ |
A fishbowl-style[1] discussion about Agile software development. Some potential topics: mock objects in testing; balancing ideology with reality; certification; no/low bugs in a codebase; contracting without being able to give a fixed bid.
[1] For those unfamiliar with the term, a fishbowl discussion works like fishbowl coding: there are a small number of people who are up front and allowed to speak at any given time. If you want to ask a question or say something, swap in for one of the people up front. If you're up front and done speaking, sit back down in the audience. |

A polyglot programming group meeting in the heart of The Beave. We seem to talk a lot about oddball programming languages and their features. And the usual geekery you'd expect from a programmer's group.
This month we'll have two short-form talks languages being developed by Westsiders. There may be cake! :) |
