Our talks span artificial intelligence, new programming languages and techniques, computational linguistics, geographic data processing, systems and software architecture, augmented reality, network security, and more as proposed to the Copious engineering team. Perhaps you're saving JSON or XML to disk. Maybe you're even using custom serialization. What happens when you need to query this data? What about when you have so much data to display that you can't keep it all in memory? The answer is CoreData. In this COPIOUS Tech Talk, Joseph Jaramillo will introduce you to CoreData, the Apple database technology included with iOS and Mac OS X. You'll learn how to use an API to fetch data from a web service, store it in a CoreData database, and query it later. This is a hands on talk and there will be code involved! You are encouraged to bring a Mac loaded with Xcode to follow along. All are welcome to attend. In Open Source communities we write to each other all the time, but weâre not really writing, weâre speaking with our fingers. Text is our primary way to communicate, but text has problems. Speaking conveys subtle emotional cues that as social animals we rely on; text strips them out. A thoughtful correspondent can put those emotions back, but weâre often not thoughtful. This talk is about the special problems of textual communication: mitigating them; ensuring that what you mean to say is what is understood; interpreting messages that seem totally out of whack; and increasing empathic bandwidth. About the author ---------------------- NÃ³irÃn Plunkett is a jack of all trades, and a master of several. By day, she works for Eucalyptus Systems, as a geekEnglish translator, and general force multiplier. She's passionate about community, communication, and collaboration. Her open source work epitomizes the saying âif you want something done, ask a busy personâ: NÃ³irÃn cut her teeth on the httpd documentation project at Apache, but soon started running conferences for the Apache Software Foundation . She was involved in setting up the Community Development project, is Org Admin for the Google Summer of Code (with more than 40 students!), and continues to contribute to projects as diverse as Infrastructure and Incubator. NÃ³irÃn was the first woman on the board of the Apache Software Foundation, and continues to sit on the board of the Open Cloud Initiative. She's also an advisor to The Ada Initiative, supporting women in open technology and culture. description	nil	→	If the idea of potentially winning $3500 and a client contract while solving environmental issues sounds great to you, come to join the first Cleanweb Hackathon in Portland. The Cleanweb Hackathon in Portland, Oregon kicking off Friday 5/17 at Earth Advantage will bring together software developers, designers and entrepreneurs for a weekend to brainstorm solutions that address global resource constraints. In less than 30 hours, a dozen teams will create apps that tackle energy, waste, water, transportation and other sustainability issues by leveraging web, mobile and social media technologies. Teams will be equipped with datasets, APIs, food and coffee; presenting their prototypes to a select panel of judges on Sunday afternoon. At the Friday night kick-off social, the local organizing team will discuss the project ideas to focus developers on solving key issues given by the city and other public and private sector partners. On Saturday morning, participantsâ teams will assemble at Earth Advantage for a briefing on API and datasets before beginning development of their applications. The hackathon will conclude Sunday with teams presenting their apps to investors and infotech industry leaders in the hope of winning the first prize of $3,500. Participants will also get a chance to mingle with the sponsors, judges and press. Presentations and awards session will begin at 3:00 PM PST. The Cleanweb Hackathon Series began in San Francisco in September 2011, which was a sold-out event with over a hundred participants that resulted in fourteen software and mobile applications. Cleanweb later mushroomed into a global movement with community spawning movement in over a dozen cities around North America and Europe and most recently the formation of The Cleanweb Initiative, a new non-profit industry association.
