Teacher: Dan Bauer
Maximum number of students: 7
Javascript is a versatile programming language embedded in web browsers, used to make web pages dynamic and interactive. Weeks 1 & 2 introduce the fundamentals of the Javascript language and its data structures. Week 3 focuses on integrating Javascript with the browser's Document Object Model (DOM), to control every element of a web page and write simple browser-based applications. Students should plan on attending all three classes, unless they are already familiar with the fundamentals of Javascript. Participation in our Intro to Programming Concepts class strongly encouraged.
Prerequisites: Basic programming, HTML & CSS experience |

TechFest Hackathon for Social Good - PDX
Roll back
| description |
Join web and mobile experts on Sun., Sept 8th at the TechFest Hackathon for Social Good. Hackathons are events when programmers and designers meet to work collaboratively to build programs and applications.
The day will begin with short presentations by educators and non-profit organizations, followed by informational sessions on building sites and web applications to help benefit non-profit organizations: The Love Comes, Hackathon for Social Good, and Day On.
THE PROJECTS:
Bet for Good: A website for The Love Comes (Barcelona, Spain) that will be used to raise money to address hunger, homelessness and economic disparity. Users wager credits/points on sporting events (national or local) and use the points that they win to get prizes. Credits/points are purchased by users and the revenues help purchase goods and services to help local nonprofits such as food banks, housing groups and economic development (micro loans, etc.)
Platform for Good: A website for the Hackathons for Social Good that allows individuals and teams to contribute to social good projects. The site is a repository for project plans, code, documents and contributor information. Github has agreed to help with the code repository component.
Day On: Day On is an all-volunteer, zero-cash-flow collaboration to connect nonprofit organizations that need advice and assistance with volunteers who are ready to help. Project information will be updated soon.
SCHEDULE:
10:45am - Sign in
11:00am - Opening message; review the projects and plans
11:20am - Brainstorm ideas for web and/or mobile tools or apps; Divide into groups to develop projects.
11:45am - Develop design, programming and production plan and assignments; begin design and development.
01:15pm - Project development
05:30pm - Finalization and testing
06:00pm - Present projects to judges
06:30pm - Hackathon winner announced If you have a great coding and design mindset, put your talents to the task and help create tools to solve local community needs.
The TechFest NW Hackathon for Social Good is presented by TechFest NW and WebVisions.

TechFestNW
Roll back
| description |
TechFestNW (formerly known as PDXconf) is designed to celebrate interesting people who are passionate about technology. Who are building a better world. And who value craft over commodity.
The event takes place in conjunction with MusicFestNW, one of the largest independent music festivals in the US. Last year, MFNW attracted acts from up-and-coming artists to bands like Passion Pit, Dinosaur Jr, Silversun Pickups, and Girl Talk. While the inaugural tech event featured speakers from Flipboard, Betaworks, Walmart Labs, GigaOM, Shazam, and Spotify---as well as local favorites like Draplin Design Co, LAIKA, Chirpify, Simple, and Nike.
TFNW will take place September 6-8, 2013, with speakers the 6th and 7th and a hackathon on the 8th. Tech takes place during the day. And music takes place during the night. Creating a true festival atmosphere.

Roll back
| description |

→ |

Portland Linux/Unix Group: Virtual Private Networks
Roll back
| description |
Virtual Private Networking
Our illustrious IPv6 authority will give a talk on popular Virtual
Private Network options, including:
1) standard IPSec clients - require static IP at each endpoint, and are supported out of the box by Windows, Cisco IOS, Mac, and Unix using raccoon and other programs like that.
2) Modified IPSec VPN clients - example is the Cisco IPSec VPN client. This is a proprietary modification used to allow one end to have a dynamic IP number.
3) SSL VPN clients. Cisco has one they call AnyConnect that is proprietary. OpenVPN is another example.
4) PPTP. This was supposed to have died years ago but since Microsoft ships the PPTP client with Windows it is still very useful is situations where the network admin is forced to provide VPN services to clients that she has no control over.
5) L2TP. This is what PPTP morphed into, Microsoft supports it natively, so it has the same benefits (to the network admin) as PPTP plus the Microsoft implementation allows for encryption using IPSec with certificates.
Ted is the Co-Owner of Portlandia IT and author of the FreeBSD Corporate Networker's Guide
Many attendees will break for a social hour at the Lucky Lab Brew Pub NW at 1945 NW Quimby
See you there! |

When:
Competition begins 6pm Friday, September 20th, and ends at 6pm, Sunday, September 22nd, followed by an awards ceremony and after party.
Challenge:
Design, source, and build the most comfortable, good looking, easy to build, and sustainable micro-home you possibly can in a single weekend, spending no more than the equivalent of a single month's rent.
Guidelines:
-For fairness, we recommend teams of no less than 3 and no more than 7 team members. You may have unlimited active supporters, and are encouraged to get as many people following and supporting your as team as possible, as this will help you instantly source materials, tools, and skills, and problem-solve in realtime.
-Teams may build onsite or off. They must have their completed houses at Green Anchors by the time the competion ends at 6pm, Sunday, September 22nd.
-The goal is to create an open-source micro home design that can be build for the equivalent of one month's rent. Therefore, meets can spend $0 using found materials, but teams cannot spend more than $500 on materials. You should keep a record of everything you buy, and everything you get for free.
-Every team must have someone filling the roles of photographer and blogger and social media expert. This can be the same person, or many people. The purpose of this rule is so the people supporting the teams can be kept up to date as the project progresses in realtime, with blog posts, Facebook posts, and tweets. This also helps to create a very well-documented record of how you built your house- so that other people can do the same. It's much easier to document a project while it's happening than to try to explain how you did it later.
-You may assemble materials and brainstorm designs before the event, but please don't start building! It won't be very much fun to watch if you already have a house built!
Scoring Criteria:
Cost
-Actual cost to build
-Cost to replicate with new materials
-Embodied energy cost/ sustainability of materials
Replicabilty
-Detail of documentation
-Ease of building
-Availability of materials
Style
-Flow
-Comfort
-Looks
Functionality
-How does it fair in the waterproof test (this should be funâ¦)
-How many human needs, besides shelter, does it meet?
-Does it have a kitchen?
-Electricity?
-Toilet?
-Shower?
Prizes:
Teams should compete for the fun of it. However, we will reach out to local businesses, particularly restaurants, bars, and coffee shops, for free perks like rounds of beers, coffee, and free meals. This is also an opportunity for crowdsourcing, and anyone is free to throw a non-monetary gift or perk into the prize pot.
Awards:
In addition to the grand prize, which will go to the team with the highest cumulative score, there will also be awards in each sub category with their own prizes, and a bunch of silly, made up awards to keep it fun.
Award Ceremony and After-Party
At 6pm on Sunday, there will be an after party. Entry to this event will be sliding scale, from $5 to $1,000,000, with 100% of the proceeds going build more tiny houses, following the winning design. |

If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the <a href="http://groups.google.com/group/pdxruby">mailing list</a>. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday" -- see you there!

Open House at Collective Agency (Wednesday, September 25th)
Wednesday, September 25th, 9am to 5pm, come and work at Collective Agency during our Open House, and join us for a potluck lunch!
Community Mission Statement:
"Collective Agency is a cozy place to work alongside people doing work they’re passionate about and committed to, where 80% of people say hi. Come and work here!"
Schedule (come when you like):
• 9am – open
• 12pm - potluck lunch here on the sofas
(Best to come before lunch--- It’s great if you do bring food, but it’s fine not to, also!)
• 2-2:30pm - Lightning Talks (like TED Talks, members talk for 2-8 minutes about something they're passionate about and committed to, whether work or otherwise)
• 5pm - end of open house
The open house is for everybody who'd like to work here for the day, regardless of whether or not you're interested in membership; it's a good day to work with friends.
Members have 24/7 access, and you can come try us out for a week if you’re considering membership to get a feel for the place and the people that work here. http://collectiveagency.co/membership/
