Agile Project Management Workshop with Chris Sims
McMenamins Kennedy School

This is a full day, experiential introduction that focuses primarily on the project management elements of Agile. It's ideal for anyone who is going to be or wants to be invovled in an agile project: developers, product people, managers, and of course, project managers.

Course Description:

On a software project, uncertainty is certain. The customer will change their mind, a 'must have' feature will be discovered, deadlines will move, or an unexpected competitive threat will need to be countered. The agile approach to project management allows the team to easily adjust to these changing conditions in order to produce the most valuable software possible.

This experiential workshop teaches the fundamentals of agile project management, and is recommended for everyone who will be involved in an agile project. We will explore the key roles, responsibilities, interactions, and processes that make a successful agile project happen.

Participants will learn:

  • Estimation
  • Release planning
  • Prioritization
  • The rhythm of iterative development and delivery
  • The flow of deliverables
  • Roles and responsibilities
  • Communication on an agile team
  • Empirical process control
  • Agile metrics
  • Simple tools for managing agile projects

The workshop focuses on practical 'how to' skill development, while providing enough theory so that participants will understand why the techniques work. Interactive exercises allow participants to learn by doing. Class notes, suggestions for further reading, and free follow-on consulting are all included to ensure that the workshop's lessons can be effectively applied back in the 'real world'.

BTW: We want $550 for the privilege of hearing us speak.

PDX Digital PM January Meetup
ISITE Design

Who:

PDX Digital PM is Portland's inaugural monthly meetup for Digital PMs and producers. If that's you and you'd like to attend, please RSVP at Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-digital-pm-january-meetup-tickets-9142921725

What:

For our inaugural event, the theme is "Defining Digital PM - The People and the Role." The agenda is as follows:

  • Introductions and ground rules
  • A quick recap of profile survey results
  • A panel discussion on "the people and the role"
  • Wrap-up and networking

When:

January 14, 2014 from 6-7PM! Show up between 5:30PM and 6:00PM to mingle and get settled. There will be time to network following the event as well.

Where:

We'll be meeting in the community room at ISITE Design. Beverages and snacks will also be provided thanks to host sponsor ISITE Design!

Why:

Portland's digital project management and production community is underserved when it comes to sharing knowledge and raising the status of the role industry-wide. Project management for the web is still in its infancy, piecing together elements of agency production, software project management, and digital strategy in a diverse role that requires a great degree of smarts and skill. Let's get together to share our stories and experiences in an effort to all be better project managers.
