This month's topic: Comparing JSON libraries

JSON has become the de-facto data interchange format for Internet web services. We'll examine open source libraries that make it easy for a Java developer to serialize objects to JSON. This presentation will include a discussion of three popular Java libraries ( json.org, Jackson, and GSON ) as well as a popular Scala library (lift-json).

Speaker: Sean Sullivan

Sean is a software engineer specializing in web services development, mobile applications, and supply chain management systems. Sean works on e-commerce projects at Gilt Groupe's Portland office. Sean is an Apache Software Foundation committer and has contributed to various open source projects, including the OAuth Java library.

PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :)

Have you heard of Phoenix? Phoenix is a framework for building HTML5 apps, API backends and distributed systems. Written in Elixir.

Seve Salazar of HouseHappy.org will walk us through creating a simple but real(wish)-world JSON API using Phoenix and deploying it to production as an OTP application. It will cover usage of Ecto, rendering JSON from a controller, integrating with StatsD using Exometer, and finally using edeliver to ship it to production.

Businesses are discovering the untapped potential of large datasets and data streams through the use of technologies for big data processing and storage. By leveraging these assets they’re creating a new generation of applications that derive value from data they used to throw away. In this presentation Ian Downard will discuss how to build operational environments for these types of applications with the MapR Converged Data Platform and he’ll walk through an example of a next-generation application that uses Java APIs for MapR Streams, Apache Spark, Apache Hive, and MapR-DB. We’ll see how these technologies can be used to join and transform unbounded datasets to find signals and derive new data streams for a financial scenario involving real-time algorithmic trading and historical analysis using SQL. We’ll also discuss how MapR enables you to run real-time data applications with the speed, reliability, and security you need for a production environment.
