Pavel Livshits from Bar Ilan University, Israel will present some of the findings of his doctoral research.
Abstract:
Rapid development of Systems-on-a-Chip (SoC) over the last decade has set tougher signal integrity requirements for on-die signal and power distribution networks. At the same time, only a very few experimental works have been conducted to study the properties of on-die interconnects constituting these networks.
In this talk, results obtained within the framework of our experimental study on global interconnects, constructed as transmission lines, that carry out on-die global signaling and on interconnects constituting power supply and ground grids, are presented. In the study we employed VLSI engineering samples typical for 90 nm and 45 nm CMOS technology nodes.
We found that local voltage fluctuations in power supply and ground grids, excited by on-die logic cell switching have a resonant-like form. This finding resolves the discussed in literature controversy over the need for considering parasitic inductance i.e., the on-die power grids should be described as an RLC circuit.
We experimentally observed and confirmed by modeling that the active element (i.e., CMOS logic cell) influences the frequency properties of power supply and ground grids during its switching (as opposed to before or after switching). Thus, it was shown that frequency properties of both grids are inter-related via the interconnecting active elements.
In our experimental study was found that the impedance matching between CMOS driver and a driven transmission line, and the Ohmic losses of on-die transmission lines, implemented by standard metal layers of modern technology nodes, play an important role in circuitsâ performance. The study suggests that impedance mismatch results in excessive power consumption and signal integrity problems. The high Ohmic losses result in a significant distortion and Inter-Symbol Interference of already a few hundreds Mega-Hertz signals.
Our study reveals that relatively low but repetitive voltage oscillations on on-die power supply and ground grids, excited by logic cells switching, may lead not only to logic faults, as it has been regarded, but also to an accumulated damage of VLSI MOSFETs. Thus, according to Berkley Reliability Tools models simulations they accelerate the device degradation due to three main wearout mechanisms, such as Time-Dependent Dielectric Breakdown, Negative Bias Temperature Instability and Hot Carrier Injection. The similar device damage, as the study shows, is caused by the impedance mismatch induced distortions of signals supplied to input of on-die CMOS logic cells.

OEN Pub Talk- SplashCast- What Happened?
Roll back
| description |
Failure isnât always a bad thing as long as you learn from it. SplashCast, launched in 2007, was originally founded around the notion of helping consumers put together videos, text, graphics and music embedded in broadcast "channels." Despite raising over $4 million in funding, SplashCast was unable to survive and closed its doors in 2009.
Please join OEN for the April 14th PubTalk to hear what happened, and what the team learned from failure. You will hear from one of the Founders of SplashCast, as well as a few investors in the company. This panel discussion will highlight the positive moves the company made, as well as share some valuable lessons of what to avoid. Learning from their insights and knowledge will undoubtedly help you in your decision making processes so that your company may avoid the same pitfalls.
Speakers: Tom Turnbull; Investors: Angela Jackson and Jon Karl; Moderator: Dave deFiebre
Tom Turnbull
Tom Turnbull is a lawyer and entrepreneur. He has worked in business development, product, and legal roles at three venture backed startups. Of the three startups, one was a success (Internet Brands, Inc. NASDAQ: INET), one a soft landing (BizBuyer.com), and the last a sad ending (SplashCast Media). Tom also headed up new media strategy and business development for the LA Times and business development for Knowledge Learning Corporation. Additionally, he was a consulting manager at Andersen and a transactional lawyer. He received a law degree from the University of Washington and an M.B.A. from New York University with an emphasis in finance and entrepreneurial studies.
Jon Karl
Jon is an experienced entrepreneur who co-founded two Portland companies, ieLogic and iovation. As Vice President of Corporate Development for iovation, Jon plays a role in defining the company's business strategy, and is responsible for the creation of strategic partnerships, technology alliances and mergers or acquisitions. At ieLogic, Jon was instrumental in creating and driving the company brand and technology innovation that led to the company's successful sale in just five years.
An expert in the areas of Internet security and fraud management, Jon is a frequent speaker at industry trade shows, where he speaks on various topics including online fraud management, online privacy, and emerging technologies that protect online environments against fraud and abuse.
Jon holds a B.S. in Economics from Oregon State University, and has been an active investor over the last 5 years in a diverse range of start-up ventures. He lives in Tualatin with his wife, two boys, a dozen chickens and a dog. |

Experts will help explain the variations on this theme and deconstruct the lingo. About The Social Innovation Forum: The Springboard Social Innovation Forum offers a monthly event designed to support those interested in creating a better future. Our focus is to help practitioners or potential practitioners of social projects push beyond discussion and debate into action. Each Forum will inspire and teach with ideas, powerful role models, and stories. Speakers, content experts, panels, and workshops will help you improve your strategies for planning and launching effective social ventures. The Forum will create a context to connect, learn, and take action around ideas that lead to tangible change—all in a venue designed for building community. The Forum is intended to attract people with a wide range of experience and backgrounds, but with a common interest—making a difference. If you are getting tired of waiting for someone else to step up to take on issues you care about, come see how this can be a place to make a difference, here or around the world. We invite people from both the business and non-profit community—investors and activists—to join in, work together, and make this a model for other cities to adopt. Learn more about the Forum at www.springboardinnovation.org/forum.php
About Springboard Innovation Springboard Innovation (www.springboardinnovation.org) is a not-for-profit headquartered in Portland, Oregon. Through a process of “innovation incubation” we help community members launch social change organizations and programs. We invite you to be involved in our newest initiative for change. |

If the first years of OSCON were about opening the minds of big business to the philosophy of open source, are the years ahead about opening the minds of the open source community to the possibilities of its future? As open source becomes fully integrated into the corporate environment, OSCON helps to define, maintain, and extend the identity of what it means to be open source.
OSCON focuses on the substance of technology, not the shadow, filtering the information that most merits attention and preparing participants for curves and challenges in the coming year and beyond. OSCON is the place to be inspired and challenged, renew bonds to community, make new connections, and find ways to give back to the open source movement. OSCON has also become one of the most important places to make open source related announcements, and to unveil projects and products.
Open source is a fundamental principle at the core of many established and emerging technologies, driving the future of the computer industry. OSCON explores the open source technologies that are here to stay, what will broaden the foundation, and what will lead the way to unexpected places and innovations.
"For those who have not been to OSCON, it's a great technical conference covering the whole spectrum of open source, including Linux, MySQL, the LAMP stack, Perl, Python, Ruby on Rails, middleware, applications, cloud computing, and more. OSCON always has great keynotes, tutorials, and evening Birds-of-a-Feather sessions. As with many conferences, a lot of the meat takes place in hallway conversations and impromptu sessions."

A polyglot programming group meeting in the heart of The Beave. We seem to talk a lot about oddball programming languages and their features. And the usual geekery you'd expect from a programmer's group.
This month we'll have a talk by David Hollingsworth on the Curl language (not to be confused with cUrl the commandline utility).
Curl is a statically typed object-oriented language that JIT-runs in a
browser plugin along with a large number of companion libraries and an IDE.
Curl also has an internal tool for compiling to C, so Curl is >90% written
in Curl. It is not related to the wget-like-library also called Curl. See
http://www.curl.com for more.
Some of the topics I can cover:
* Why we (still) need a programming language for the Internet (and why Flash/JavaFX/Silverlight ain't it).
* Mixing text and code: not the heresy XML advocates would have you believe.
* Venture Capitalists ate my syntax: switching from Lisp-y Curl to C-y Curl.
* Java Generics almost make me pine for C++ templates OR if {Array-of int} isn't a real type, your type system sucks.
* Yes, Virginia, non-normalized Unicode means operations are O(n) (aka Strings are not really arrays of chars, but they're closer in Curl).
* DSLs in Curl: source-to-source macros ala Lisp.
* Refactoring is for wimps: a strong versioning mechanism partially mitigates the need for backwards-compatibility, but not entirely.
* Plus the standard "ooh shiny" stuff.

Building Refactoring Tools for Functional Languages
Details:
* Presenter: Prof. Simon Thompson
* Date: Thursday, March 25, 2010
* Time: 10:30am
Abstract: Refactoring is the process of changing the design of a program without changing what it does. Typical refactorings, such as function extraction and generalisation, are intended to make a program more amenable to extension, more comprehensible and so on. Refactorings differ from other sorts of program transformation in being applied to source code (rather than within the bowels of a compiler), and in having an effect across a code base. Because of this, there is a need to give (semi-)automated support to the process. This talk will reflect on our experience of building tools to refactor functional programs written in Haskell (HaRe?) and Erlang (Wrangler). In doing this we will address system design, the pragmatics of system take-up, as well as contrasting the style of refactoring and tooling for Haskell and Erlang.
Bio: Simon Thompson is a Professor of Logic and Computation at the University of Kent. |
