We’re an inclusive bunch of makers, hackers and artists, sharing space and equipment. h.h exists to foster community and creativity, with the accessibility of some modern tools such as 3D printers, laser cutters, welders, etc.. Bring your wildest images, patterns, and tessellations!
This three-week workshop will introduce participants to the stained glass copper foil technique — a versatile, cold-glass method that allows for intricate, lightweight, and sculptural designs.
Create a colorful window panel, a lantern that glows from within, or a unique lampshade. This class will help you to confidently realize your ideas in two- or three-dimensional form.
The class will cover visual design, pattern-making, structural planning, and hands-on skill-building. Cold glass working techniques will be the focus. No kiln forming or lampworking will be involved.
What You'll Learn:
- How to cut and shape glass using hand tools
- How to apply copper foil and prepare pieces for soldering
- How to solder safely and cleanly
- How to use both traditional scribing and/or digital design tools
- How to approach the construction of structurally sound 2D and 3D pieces
- Finishing techniques: patina, cleaning, and display
What's Provided:
- Safety glasses
- A broad selection of clear, colored, and opaque sheet glass
- Glass cutters, nippers, grinding implements, pliers, and soldering tools
- Vinyl plotter for cutting custom design guides
- Copper foil, solder, flux, lead came
- A variety of support forms for assembling lamp shades
- Plenty of design help and encouragement!
What to Bring:
- Closed-toe shoes and work-safe clothing
- An old towel you don't mind dedicating to your project
- A sketchbook, or reference images (optional but helpful)
- Ideas, curiosity, and patience!

Saturday, August 30 – Construction!
- Applying copper foil

- Continued work on individual projects
Saturday, September 6 – Finishing & Display
- Final soldering and adjustments
- Cleaning, patina, and polish
- Hanging and mounting methods
- Group share and informal critique
Additional Info
- No experience is necessary, but attention to detail and respect for sharp materials is a must!
- Class is limited to 12 participants to allow for plenty of tool time and individualized support.
- A morning session will be provided if the class fills.
