The Spring Insight console, part of tc Server Developer Edition, is a dashboard view of real-time Spring application performance metrics. Without changing their code, developers can use Spring Insight to detect, analyze and diagnose application performance issues right from their desktops.
A graphical look at application performance: Within Spring Insight, application performance is graphically displayed via response time charts and histograms, providing developers an easily digestible view into where processing time is spent.

This Friday at Beer and Blog, Alaska Airlines will provide free snackage for everyone and two drink tickets to the first 40 people who arrive. As usual, our event begins at 4pm at the Green Dragon, so if you have a hankering for freebie booze you should show up close to start time.

Almost as if it was fate (and who am I to say itâs not?) the Laughing Squid crew is in Portland this week, and they plan to join us at Beer and Blog for a spell.
What is Laughing Squid? Itâs an online resource for art, culture and technology that also provides web hosting services. The Squiddies are having their own party â a PDX Drinkup â this Friday at 7pm at the Lucky Labrador Brew Pub, just down the street from the Green Dragon.
Coincidence? Or FATE? ;)
So, after weâve exhausted our wonderful Beer and Blog server Lexie, weâll trek a couple of blocks down to the Lucky Labrador Brew Pub to meet the the Laughing Squid team at their PDX Drinkup.

Our first meeting of 2010 is nearly upon us and it's going to be a big one! The theme for January is: Geographic Information. In addition to 3 (count 'em: 3!) great feature presentations, there will be a giveaway of GIS and Python books. And, after, we'll adjourn to the pub for beer. (Map to be provided.)
First up we'll have Michel's Module of the Month, a lightning talk on a randomly chosen stdlib module by an unprepared volunteer.
Then, Michel Pelletier will introduce Geohash, a clever text encoding of latitude and longitude information that is very useful for non-traditional databases, among other things. Geohashing was cooked up by Gustavo Niemeyer of Mocker and Dateutil fame.
Webb Sprague will talk about how to incorporate geographic data into relational databases using PostGIS and PostgreSQL. He will cover making a connection with psycopg2, modeling using geographic data types, and associating geographic data with non-geographic attributes.
Building on Webb's talk, Tim Welch will introduce the geographic capabilities of the Django Framework (aka GeoDjango) which utilizes PostGIS and psycopg2. He'll briefly cover geometric data types, spatial operators, the Django geographic admin and creating geo-enabled web services. In addition to examples, at least one application will also be demoed. |

It's implemented entirely in Haskell and demonstrates functional web application development, crawling, scraping and distributed architecture. Serialist uses interesting graph algorithms to add and step through content lazily. Work on the site also produced useful, reusable Haskell modules: early-finish monad, HTTP Digest implementation, database layer, recursive monadic data structures, fast/lazy character converter, etc. Jamey and Josh will discuss these topics as well as their experiences analyzing and profiling their Haskell code to improve performance and reduce memory consumption.

Monthly meeting, Technology Radio Amateur Club
Server sky is a proposal to build large dispersed arrays of 7 gram paper-thin solar-powered computer satellites and launch them into 6400km earth orbit. Arrays act as large parallel computers, as well as sparse phased array antennas, transmitting thousands of communication beams simultaneously to ground receivers and other arrays in space.
Server-sat arrays use unlimited space solar power, and operate outside the biosphere. The environmental impact of power generation and heat disposal is tiny. Other surprising biological effects will need study. Earth can return to what it is good at – green and growing things – while space can be filled with gray and computing things. |

The first 30 hour day--the livestreaming Web-based telethon we put together to raise money for charities in the Portland area--brought in around $7000 for Free Geek, the Oregon Food Bank, and Toys for Tots, a couple of barrels of food, and at least one overflowing barrel of toys. Not to mention generating 30 consecutive hours of entertainment from awesome local artists for more than 70,000 people who tuned in to watch.
Not bad for roughly six weeks from concept to completion.
Now, we're hard at work on 30 hour day 2. And it promises to be bigger and better than the first.

PRESENTATIONS
* "Serialist: Lazy web-crawling in Haskell" by Jamey Sharp and Josh Triplett
The http://serialist.net/ site provides a way to find, track and read serialized content (e.g., web comics). It's implemented entirely in Haskell and demonstrates functional web application development, crawling, scraping and distributed architecture. Serialist uses interesting graph algorithms to add and step through content lazily. Work on the site also produced useful, reusable Haskell modules: early-finish monad, HTTP Digest implementation, database layer, recursive monadic data structures, fast/lazy character converter, etc. Jamey and Josh will discuss these topics as well as their experiences analyzing and profiling their Haskell code to improve performance and reduce memory consumption.

OEN PubTalk⢠- Seed Oregon - Round 3

OEN's Seed Oregon is a unique competition held during four consecutive PubTalk events. The competition is for Oregon and Southwest Washington seed-stage companies who are seeking capital within the range of $100,000 to $2,000,000. One winner from each preliminary round will move on to a championship round, where a finalist will earn a coveted presenting opportunity at OEN's Angel Oregon, the premier angel investing event in the Northwest.
Nine presenting companies in total will be selected to compete in the 2009-2010 Seed Oregon tournament. Each will have 10 minutes to present their concept to the PubTalk audience, followed by a 10 minute Q&A session. Three companies will compete at each of the preliminary rounds, with the audience voting for the winning presentations to move to the championship round.

All programming languages welcome. Come work on your own projects, work on others participants' projects, get advice, have fun, etc.
You're encouraged to bring a computer, but can team up with others that brought one too.
Afterwards, the group descends on the 12th and Hawthorne foodcart pod for additional nourishment. |
