update Calagator::Event 1250458566 OEN PubTalk - The Art of Bootstrapping Roll back

description Join OEN at the May 12 PubTalk where five successful entrepreneurs will reveal to you their secrets on the art of bootstrapping. The founders of Jama Software, Paydici, Rumblefish, Reliable Remodeler, and Urban Airship will share with you how, prior to their first round of funding (if any), they used creative solutions and drew from nontraditional resources to build their companies with limited capital. They'll share their advice on where to cut corners and help you identify when you can't afford to be cheap. You’ll also learn how to grow a company organically; creative ways to generate and manage cash flow, and the challenges of putting everything at risk. This panel discussion will be moderated by Rick Turoczy, the founder and principal writer of Silicon Florist, Portland's premier blog on technology and entrepreneurship. Moderator: Rick Turoczy of Silicon Floriist Panelists: Eric Winquist of Jama Software, Eli Alford-Jones of Paydici, Paul Anthony of Rumblefish, Eric Doeble of Reliable Remodeler, and Scott Kveton of Urban Airship Panelist Bios Eric Doeble, Reliable Remodeler Eric Doebele is a serial entrepreneur and active advisor to startup companies. He started several companies including HandymanOnline in 1997, which raised over $27 Million in venture capital grew to over 300 employees, and was later acquired by ServicMagic.com. In 2007, ReliableRemodeler.com ranked 187th in the 2007 Inc. 500’s list of fastest growing companies. Eric sold ReliableRemodeler.com to Quinstreet in 2008, where he then held the role of Vice President of Home Services. He was named a "Leader of the Pack – 20 young(ish) Oregonians who are making things happen" by Oregon Business Magazine. Eric is a board member or active advisor to several companies, including ISG Illumination Systems, SecondPorch, Giftango, Paydici, and EnhanceScape. At Redside, Eric saw first-hand the need companies had for collaborative requirements management which led to the creation of Jama Software and the development of Jama Contour. In March 2006, Eric founded Jama Software with the vision of providing customers a more collaborative way to develop new products and eliminate the common frustrations with traditional approaches to requirements management. Jama has created a powerful Web-based application called Contour that's used by thousands every day to manage billions of dollars in research and development projects. create Calagator::Event 1250458560 Refresh Portland April: Adam DuVander on Custom Map Scripting and Design Roll back

description nil Most Google Maps are boring, but yours doesn’t have to be. There are simple, off-the-shelf tools that, along with your design talent, can make your maps stand out from the rest. You can decide where they go, how they look and how they act. Location on the web is more important than ever before. The data may originate from a phone or a check-in service, but chances are it ends up on a map. Learn how to customize markers, react to map events and layer images on top. You don’t even have to settle for the same old colors: make the maps conform to your design. Once you see how simple the tools are, you’ll want to get started right away on a mapping project of your own.

update Calagator::Event 1250458265 PDXScala Meeting Roll back

description Come join other Scala enthusiasts at our new location graciously hosted by Jive Software. Anything Scala related is open for discussion. We'll have Jesse Hallett discussing how he put together a lambda calculus to learn about Scala's parsing libraries. Leif Warner will also be showing an application he's been developing which uses the Step web framework (a workalike of the the Sinatra framework in Ruby). This app uses Simple Build Tool, RDF/OWL, graphs and federated queues and is intended to provide an "open source community family tree" of the local Portland-area music scene. If you have a project or some code you'd like to share (for review or just to look at how you solved an interesting problem) please bring it along. Pizza will be provided by Jive. update Calagator::Event 1250458552 TiE Oregon: Energy Storage for the Smart Grid Roll back

description Energy storage is increasingly perceived as a necessary and vital component of any future smart grid, yet meaningful energy storage is still a scarce and missing component. Why is energy storage so important? - Energy storage helps solve the variability issues with renewable energy (solar and wind) generation, and as such will help balance the grid - Distributed energy storage located near the point of use will provide localized power, thereby decreasing the need to build new power plants and additional transmission lines. - Energy storage has been proclaimed by some as a "killer app" by utilizing batteries in parked electric vehicle (EV) fleets to feed stored energy back to the grid. Such Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) applications have promise to feed energy back to the grid for special purposes to benefit both the utility and the electric car owner. - Significant utility-scale storage capacity solves an even bigger issue, capturing and utilizing the massive amounts of electrical generating capacity that is otherwise typically unused. The discussion will focus on: - Value chain elements of the energy storage industry - Who are local champions of energy storage - What are the interests of the investment community - What does the policy and regulatory framework look like - How do customers value energy storage - How is the smart grid expected to interact with energy storage Join our panel on April 21st, to understand the technologies, trade-offs, market segments, future potential of energy storage. Our 3 panelists are: - Dylan Steeg, Director Intel Capital, Intel's global venture capital organization. Dylan is responsible for several cleantech and semiconductor sectors, including photovoltaics, smart grid/demand response, datacenter energy efficiency, and semiconductor manufacturing - Dan Nicollet, Co-founder, Supercritical Energy, a pioneer of Supercritical Fluid Technology applied to distributed energy generation and storage on the electric grid - Marcus Wood , Partner and Chair of the Energy and Telecommunications (ENTEL) practice group Stoel Rives, . He focuses his practice on energy provider and energy facility developer clients. The panel will be moderated by John Thornton, Founder, Clean Future, a consulting firm providing business and technical expertise at the convergence of energy, mobility, sustainability and the Smart Grid. description This month's topic: TBD ---------- PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :) Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't *have* to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. Go ahead and just show up! Many people also go for a drink and further discussion following the meeting, at a location determined ad hoc (lately, the Market Street Pub at 10th and Market: http://mcmenamins.com/index.php?loc=24 ). http://twitter.com/pjug http://pjug.org/ (join our mailing list, linked from the website!) This month's topic: WebSockets WebSockets is an exciting new technology that enables bidirectional communication between web applications and server-side processes. Google's Chrome browser already provides WebSockets and developers can expect to see the technology in other browsers in 2010. This presentation will cover the WebSocket protocol and JavaScript API. We'll also discuss Jetty's WebSocketServlet API and demonstrate how to use WebSockets in a GWT application. ---------- PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :) Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't *have* to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise.
