WikiWednesday - The Power of Naming in wikis and Wagn - John Abbe
Roll back
| description |
The name you come up with for a wiki page has always been a critical part of wikis' power in creating meaning.[1] We'll be reviewing the history and background of WikiNames in general, and the further space for meaning-creation opened up by Wagn's plus cards. Probable forays into pattern languages, including a pattern language of group process under development. [2]
Wagn is a free/open source Ruby on Rails structured wiki, which wiki inventor Ward Cunningham called, "One of the freshest contributions to wiki since I coined the term".[3]
Come at 5:30 for drinks/snacks and the discussion will start at 6:15.

2. http://grouppatternlanguage.org/
3. http://wagn.org/
Facilitated by John Abbe - one of the designers of Wagn, and cited by Joshua Schachter as clarifying his thoughts in developing delicious.com. |

Galois Tech Talk: Typing Directories
Roll back

Galois is pleased to host the following tech talk. These talks are open to the interested public. Please join us!
The talk will be held at
Galois Inc.
421 SW 6th Ave. Suite 300, Portland, OR, USA
(3rd floor of the Commonwealth building)
Typing Directories
Details:
* Presenter: Kathleen Fisher, AT&T Labs
* Date: Tuesday May 04, 2010
* Time: 10:30am
Title: Typing Directories
Abstract: PADS describes the contents of individual ad hoc data files, but has no provisions for describing collections of files, i.e., directories. In this talk, I explore examples where having a declarative description of directories as well as files would be useful, including websites, source code trees, source code control systems, operating systems, and scientific data sets. As part of this exploration, I identify essential features of a directory description language and useful tools that might be produced from such a description. I end with a series of questions about how such a language might most easily be implemented in the context of Haskell.
This is joint work with David Walker and Kenny Zhu.
Bio: (from http://www.research.att.com/people/Fisher_Kathleen_S) Kathleen Fisher is a Principal Member of the Technical Staff at AT&T Labs Research and a Consulting Faculty Member in the Computer Science Department at Stanford University. Kathleenâs research focuses on advancing the theory and practice of programming languages and on applying ideas from the programming language community to the problem of ad hoc data management. The main thrust of her work has been in domain-specific languages to facilitate programming with massive amounts of ad hoc data, including the Hancock system for efficiently building signatures from massive transaction streams and the PADS system for managing ad hoc data.
Kathleen is an ACM Distinguished Scientist. She has served as program chair for FOOL, CUFP, and ICFP. She is past Chair of the ACM Special Interest Group in Programming Languages (SIGPLAN), Co-Chair of CRAâs Committee on the Status of Women (CRA-W), and an editor of the Journal of Functional Programming. She is currently serving on the CRA Board. |

Executive team members from a recently funded medical device company will share insight into today’s investment landscape. Intended to provide C-level technology professionals an inside look at creating a winning diligence package, the discussion will be uniquely focused on maintaining an edge while engaging investors and working the process to the advantage of the company. Specific attention will be given to planning, positioning and focus at the various stages of investment including the initial approach, management of the “due dilly” process and orchestration of a successful close.
Speaker bios:

Part hackathon, part geek social, these biweekly meetings are a time for you to come join others for insight, inspiration or just insanity. Bring your toys for others to see, or come see what others have been painstakingly chipping away at in their spare time. Whether it's code or chips, hacking of all sorts is encouraged. But we also like to hear your crazy ideas, so please come join us and bring your willingness to share your brilliance. We'll be the kids with all the coolest stuff on the table. Hope to see you there. |

Portland Perl Mongers -- Fennec
Roll back
| description |

speaker: Chad 'Exodist' Granum
Chad will demonstrate what he has so far, and request feedback.
From the fennec docs:
Fennec - Framework upon which inter-compatible testing solutions can be built.
Fennec provides a solid base that is highly extendable. It allows for the writing of custom nestable workflows (like RSPEC), Custom Asserts (like Test::Exception), Custom output handlers (Alternatives to TAP), Custom file types, and custom result passing (collectors). In Fennec all test files are objects. Fennec also solves the forking problem, that's it, forking just plain works.
This framework is what has come from a discussion around modern testing in Perl. It is an attempt to address, or make addressable the desires and needs expressed therein. It is also an attempt to make glue for all future solutions to current and future problems.
As always, the meeting will be followed by social hour at the Lucky Lab.

About The Social Innovation Forum: The Springboard Social Innovation Forum offers a monthly event designed to support those interested in creating a better future. Our focus is to help practitioners or potential practitioners of social projects push beyond discussion and debate into action. Each Forum will inspire and teach with ideas, powerful role models, and stories. Speakers, content experts, panels, and workshops will help you improve your strategies for planning and launching effective social ventures. The Forum will create a context to connect, learn, and take action around ideas that lead to tangible change—all in a venue designed for building community. The Forum is intended to attract people with a wide range of experience and backgrounds, but with a common interest—making a difference. If you are getting tired of waiting for someone else to step up to take on issues you care about, come see how this can be a place to make a difference, here or around the world. We invite people from both the business and non-profit community—investors and activists—to join in, work together, and make this a model for other cities to adopt. Learn more about the Forum at www.springboardinnovation.org/forum.php
About Springboard Innovation Springboard Innovation (www.springboardinnovation.org) is a not-for-profit headquartered in Portland, Oregon. Through a process of “innovation incubation” we help community members launch social change organizations and programs. We invite you to be involved in our newest initiative for change. |

Go Portland Tech
Roll back
| description |
Go Portland Tech is a chance for everyone involved in Portland technology to come try their hand at Go, a game that is loved by geeks the world over.
Go is both thousands of years old, simple to learn, and poses interesting computer science problems (a computer player has yet to beat the best humans, and amateurs can still beat the bots too).
Regular Portland Go club meetups are held on Tuesdays and Saturdays (see: OregonGo.org) but this is a chance for tech folks that are seasoned players or absolute beginners to get together and share a game.
No experience is necessary to attend, and there will be drinks and snacks. |

MDiTV Launches First
Comprehensive Medical News Network
Broadcast Health Network Features Exclusive Health News and Health Shows
Portland, ORâApril 27, 2010âMDiTV, http://www.mditv.com, has announced its official launch today. The first of its kind medical information network offers 24/7 health news and programming on healthy living. The content is produced out of the companyâs brand new Portland studio, and veteran anchors Andrew Holtz and Cathy Marshall, formerly of CNN, present the news segments.
"Weâre very excited about the building and launch of this initial web portal and our subsequent expansion into all areas of digital broadcast,â said Robert Lazzara, M.D., founder and CEO of MDiTV, Inc.
Lazzara explained, âCoinciding with the convergence of digital technologies, MDiTV will soon offer applications for iPhones, iPads, other smartphones, and Internet supported TV, allowing viewers more abundant access to live and on demand rich media programming.â MDiTV is also the first health information network to broadcast a live surgery over an iPhone, which can be seen now at www.MDiTV.com.
âTodayâs launch is just the beginning,â said Lazzara. âWe have several additional shows and social media content ready to roll out over the upcoming weeks.â
Anchor Andrew Holtz added, âWith the collapse of the traditional news business, MDiTV is a new model for professional journalism in an Internet age.â
The networkâs content is designed for patients and providers alike. MDiTVâs mission is to engage, educate, and empower.

WikiWednesday - The Power of Naming in wikis and Wagn
Roll back
| description |
The name you come up with for a wiki page has always been a critical part of wikis' power in creating meaning.[1] We'll be reviewing the history and background of WikiNames in general, and the further space for meaning-creation opened up by Wagn's plus cards.
Wagn is a free/open source Ruby on Rails structured wiki, which Ward Cunningham called, "One of the freshest contributions to wiki since I coined the term".
Come at 5:30 for drinks/snacks and the discussion will start at 6:15. |
