update Calagator::Event 1250458678 IxDA Portland: Jared Spool Roll back

description This month we are pleased to present a lecture from Jared Spool! Revealing Design Treasures from The Amazon On its surface, Amazon.com just seems like a large e-commerce site, albeit a successful one. Its design isn't flashy, nor is it much to write home about. But deep within its pages are hidden secrets -- secrets that every designer should know about. If one looks closely at what the team at Amazon has built, it's filled with innovative functionality and clever designs, all of which creates a delightful experience for its users and directly produces regular profits for its shareholders. But not all is perfect. Some design changes in the last few years have not been the success that the team had hoped for. Amazon's exceptional qualities and imperfections are critical knowledge for any designer that wants to dig deep into what makes the site tick. In this entertaining presentation, Jared will share some of UIE's latest research into the hidden treasures of (the) Amazon. You'll learn: + The simple Yes/No question that increased revenues by more than $1 billion + The elegant subtlety of Amazon's security system + Why Amazon's business model is more than meets the eye (and why designers need to care) + The wins and losses that Amazon has had with social media functionality About Jared Spool: If you’ve ever seen Jared speak about usability, you know that he’s probably the most effective, knowledgeable communicator on the subject today. What you probably don’t know is that he has guided the research agenda and built User Interface Engineering into the largest research organization of its kind in the world. He’s been working in the field of usability and design since 1978, before the term "usability" was ever associated with computers. Jared spends his time working with the research teams at the company, helps clients understand how to solve their design problems, explains to reporters and industry analysts what the current state of design is all about, and is a top-rated speaker at more than 20 conferences every year. He is also the conference chair and keynote speaker at the annual User Interface Conference, is on the faculty of the Tufts University Gordon Institute, and manages to squeeze in a fair amount of writing time. This month IxDA Portland is pleased to present a lecture from Jared Spool! Wednesday May 19, 2010 Cost: Free! You need to register and bring your ticket for admission. There are only 220 seats available! RSVP: http://spool-amazon.eventbrite.com/ Where: World Trade Center Portland 121 SW Salmon St, 2WTC, Portland OR 97204 Bridge Level Auditorium Directions [http://www.wtcpd.com/mapsanddirections.php] Parking is available below the building for $3. create Calagator::Event 1250458682 Galois Tech Talk: Developing Good Habits for Bare-Metal Programming Roll back

description nil presenter: Mark Jones abstract: Developers of systems software must often deal with low-level and performance-critical details that are hard to address in high-level programming languages. As a result, much of the systems software that is produced today is written in languages like C and assembly code, without the benefit of more expressive type systems or other features from modern functional programming languages that could help to increase programmer productivity or software quality. In this talk, we present an update on the status of Habit, a dialect of Haskell that we are designing, as part of the HASP project at PSU, to meet the needs of high assurance systems programming. Among other features, Habit provides: mechanisms for fine control over representation of bit-level and memory-based data structures; strong support for both functional and imperative programming; and a flexible type system that allows precise characterization of size and bound information via type level naturals, as well as termination properties resulting from the use of unpointed types.

He is also the conference chair and keynote speaker at the annual User Interface Conference, is on the faculty of the Tufts University Gordon Institute, and manages to squeeze in a fair amount of writing time. This month we are pleased to present a lecture from Jared Spool! What you probably don’t know is that he has guided the research agenda and built User Interface Engineering into the largest research organization of its kind in the world. update Calagator::Event 1250458641 PLUG Advanced Topics: DRDB & Pacemaker part II by Adam Gandelman Roll back

description DRBD stands for Distributed Replicated Block Device. Mainline in the Linux kernel since 2.6.33, it is used to replicate data at the block level over the network in a "network RAID1" fashion. It is generally deployed as a cost effective, shared-nothing alternative to a SAN and used as the building block for high availability clusters. Pacemaker is currently the de facto open-source cluster resource manager (CRM) for Linux HA clustering. With it, nodes and services can be monitored and managed to ensure maximum uptime in the face of the most severe service and hardware level failures. Combining the two allows admins to %99.999 uptime at a fraction of the price of proprietary alternatives. In LINBIT's second PLUG Advance Topics installment, Adam Gandelman will give a more in-depth view of DRBD and Pacemaker and demonstrate how they work closely together to keep applications running and consistent. During the second half of the presentation, Adam will provide attendees with a real-world example by configuring a highly-available LAMP cluster from the ground up. Though geared toward web services, the concepts presented can easily be expanded to provide the HA gaurantee to virtually any Linux service. Agenda: - Brief re-introduction to DRBD, Pacemaker and HA clustering concepts. - Overview of various use cases and interesting deployments - Configuration and implementation of a highly-available LAMP cluster using DRBD for data redundancy and Pacemaker for resource management. Adam Gandelman is an expert in open-source clustering and high availability. Originally from New England, Adam lives in Portland, OR where he has been working at LINBIT, developers of DRBD and maintainers of Heartbeat. Aside from providing top-level Linux High-Availability and Disaster Recovery consulting for customers in the Americas, he leads LINBIT training courses in the US, doubles as a technical writer and regularly contributes to related open-source projects. description nil PDMA LEARNING EVENT - THURSDAY, MAY 20th, 5:30-7:30 pm FIXING THE #1 CAUSE OF NEW PRODUCT FAILURE EFFECTIVELY COMMUNICATING MARKET REQUIREMENTS TO R&D Save $5 and avoid cash hassles by pre-registering here for this great event! http://www.pdma.org/oregon) Poor or incomplete requirements are the number one reason why new products fail. One study associated 74% of failed products with deficient or missing market studies. The goal is to establish a common understanding between marketing and R&D of a prioritized set of customer requirements so R&D can create customer value through innovative products. A Market Requirements Document (MRD) is an attempt to provide this critical communication, but frequently leads to frustration, confusion, and internal battles. The Oregon Chapter of the Product Development and Management Association (PDMA) invites you to its May Learning and Networking Event. At this event, three experienced product planning professionals will explain the strengths and common failings of MRDs and other techniques used to communicate market opportunities. Three important perspectives will be represented: the theory of what should be done, the reality of how it is done at a large, successful corporation (Intel), and the challenges of trying to do it at small companies with limited resources. If you don't know them, Involver is the leading creator of custom tabs and apps on Facebook. No, they don't make Farmville type stuff. *Other* people use their services to make their own tabs and apps. And, business is booming for them. So much so, that <strong>they are expanding their offices and are scouting out Portland as a potential location</strong>! I told them we had a seriously under utilized pool of developer talent here and they want to see for themselves. Help us roll out the red carpet for these out of town potential employers so they have no choice but to open up shop somewhere in PDX.

create Calagator::Event 1250458671 PDXScala Meeting Roll back

description nil Come join other Scala enthusiasts at our new location graciously hosted by Jive Software. Anything Scala related is open for discussion. We'll have Jesse Hallett discussing how he put together a lambda calculus to learn about Scala's parsing libraries. Leif Warner will also be showing an application he's been developing which uses the Step web framework (a workalike of the the Sinatra framework in Ruby). This app uses Simple Build Tool, Scardf, Jena, TDB, RDF/OWL, graphs and federated queries and is intended to provide an "open source community family tree" of the local Portland-area music scene. If you have a project or some code you'd like to share (for review or just to look at how you solved an interesting problem) please bring it along. Pizza will be provided by Jive. http://pdxscala.org/next-pdxscala-meeting-thusday-415-7pm-at-jive

create Calagator::Event 1250458663 PADNUG June Meeting Roll back

description nil Andrew Hay: Making a Mockery of .NET Andrew Hay is a developer, speaker, author, dad, husband and Chief Belly Scratcher of the family dog. He started over 15 years ago by supporting mainframe assembly language programs which exceeded his own age. A few years after this initial shock treatment, he hooked his wagon to something called Active Server Pages and has been riding the gravy train on the Microsoft platform ever since. Andrew has been an active member of PADNUG since moving from Chicago to Portland in 2002 and he currently works as a developer at Vertigo Software, Inc. TOPIC: Making a Mockery of .NET In a return to showing some good ol' code in Visual Studio, Andrew will present a blend of unit testing topics. First, a quick level-set with a sampling of seasoned and fresh unit test frameworks. Next, the discussion will advance to mock object frameworks, and then round out the evening with parameterized unit test frameworks. You'll examine tools like NUnit, Rhino Mocks, MOQ, Typemock Isolator, as well as some Visual Studio 2010 tools including Pex and Moles, two clever incubation projects from Microsoft Research. create Calagator::Event 1250458662 Portland Silverlight User Group - May Meeting Roll back

description nil WHO: Jeff Paries Jeff Paries is the lead Silverlight developer with Waggener Edstrom Worldwide, a leading integrated communications company. Jeff has a strong background in 3D graphics and animation and is also an accomplished author and instructor in that area — he has authored several books and numerous magazine articles related to 3D. An early adopter of Silverlight, Jeff’s interests lie in developing animation concepts and methodologies within Silverlight. As a developer with design experience, Jeff’s mission is to help bridge the gap between design and development. His latest book, “Foundation Silverlight 3 Animation” works to further this goal through a scenario-based approach. TOPIC: Procedural Animation in Microsoft Silverlight Come and see how trigonometry and trigonometric functions can help us create movement in Microsoft Silverlight. Trigonometry is the study of how the angles and lengths of sides of triangles relate to one another, and is quite useful in programming Silverlight applications. We'll talk about how to apply trigonometry within Silverlight to create free-form rotations, calculate the distance between objects, use Sine curves to create oscillating movement, and more. The math will be demonstrated in a scenario-based approach in order to make it easier to understand, even if you slept through math class. Warmup - Smooth Streaming w/ VideoRx At the beginning of the meeting (6pm) Robert Reinhardt, co-author of the Microsoft Expression Blend 2 Visual Quickstart Guide and the Flash Bible series, will present his latest online encoding service, videoRx.com. This service makes it easy to compress your video content at the highest quality and lowest file size. videoRx.com analyzes your uploaded source video and delivers the best compression for your content. videoRx.com can also create adaptive streaming content for Silverlight Smooth Streaming for playback on devices and the web. description nil A few of us are getting together to do work sprinting for Open Source Bridge. It's a beautiful day, so our plan is to occupy the patio at http://ristrettoroasters.com - Ristretto (3808 N Williams Ave) until my battery runs out, and then enjoy a pint at the http://www.newoldlompoc.com/5thquadrant_home.html - Fifth Quadrant in the early afternoon. I'll head over to Ristretto at 11am. Come join us if you'd like to work on a few things for the conference, or if you'd just like to hang out on this fine day. We'll be working on sponsorship-related things, checking over the schedule, writing blog posts about talks we're really looking forward to seeing, and shoring up details for the Hacker Lounge, parties, and generally fun stuff around the conference. Leslie Hawthorn (formerly program manager for Google Summer of Code), and a few people from the OSU Open Source Lab are also coming out today. We hope you're having a lovely day and hope to see you!
