EPISODE #7!
Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks!
TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to the 3rd weekly PDX TechCoffee. One commit a week is all we ask.
NOTE: We've had some wifi problems in the past, so i recommend having what you need to work locally on your laptop before you come by. |

"How can I better predict if my business will likely survive or fail? Is it possible to know in advance whether I'm going to beat the competition? How can I shape my business into a strategy that is more likely to succeed?"

Pioneering this research, first at Intel and then at Harvard, Thomas Thurston has offered to share this fascinating work, the results, and the actionable implications for managers.

Perkins & Company
1211 SW Fifth Ave, Suite 1000
Portland, OR 97204-
While Oregon and Southwest Washington economies have endured huge recessionary turmoil, signs are beginning to indicate that it is time to think future, not past. Business owners and HR professionals now need to think longer term, with an emphasis on hiring the right individuals as they lay out a roadmap for ongoing success. With so many people looking for work, the question becomes, "How do I make the right choice or choices?" This seminar is designed to help you do just that!
Too often, well-intentioned interviewers believe that asking the right questions will lead to hearing or not hearing the right answers. This seminar is designed to focus on both the questions and the answers. If youâve ever thought you made the perfect hire only to be led astray, this seminar is for you.
â¢Improve your own interviewing communication skills
â¢Identify what questions you would like your candidates to ask
â¢Know what youâre listening for when you ask, âDo you have any questions?â
â¢Uncover how serious your candidates are about your job offering
Speaker: Kathy Maixner
Kathy Maixner is a nationally-recognized consultant and trainer who specializes in improving communication effectiveness and sales performance. With a strong background in staffing, she works with companies to ensure that their communication processes surrounding hiring and coaching their employees is done with an eye on performance improvement and staff retention. www.sellingsmartonline.com.

Gubernatorial Candidate Forum - Republican Candidates

Multnomah Athletic Club
1849 SW Salmon St.
Portland, OR 97 -
The Oregon Entrepreneurs Network (OEN), Software Association of Oregon (SAO), Oregon Business Association (OBA) and the Portland Business Alliance are presenting the 2010 Gubernatorial Candidate Forums. Tech America will be a supporting organization for the forums
Oregonâs economy is facing great challenges. The state is struggling with serious budgetary shortfalls and that is exacerbated by an unemployment rate that is hovering above 10 percent. With the recent passage of measures 66 & 67 many Oregonians question what the impact will be for Oregon businesses. Policies that support and encourage business growth and economic development are a top-of-mind priority for many Oregonians. These candidate forums are intended to provide an opportunity for members of the business community to ask the candidates from each party what they would do to help support business and economic growth in Oregon.
The Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate forum will take place on Wednesday, April 7 at Portland General Electricâs auditorium located at 121 SW Salmon St, 2WTC in Portland. It will feature Democratic candidates Bill Bradbury (www.bradburyfororegon.com) and John Kitzhaber, (www.johnkitzhaber.com).
The Republican Gubernatorial Candidate forum will take place on Tuesday, April 27 at 1849 SW Salmon St. in Portland. It will feature Republican candidates Allen Alley (www.allenalley.com and Chris Dudley (www.chrisdudley.com).
Tickets are required for onsite attendees and individual live stream access. Registration is recommended for satellite venues.
The gubernatorial candidate forum will be held prior to the primaries and will be moderated by Laural Porter of KGW News (twitter.com/lauralkgw). Check-in begins at 4:00PM. The program will begin at 4:30 PM and will run to 6:00 PM. Tickets are $20 for members of presenting or supporting organizations and $40 for non-members. We encourage attendees to pre-register online using the link below.
The forums will be streamed live over the web. Individual web stream tickets can be purchased for $10 in advance, but business community members outside of the Portland area may attend a satellite event in their local area at no charge.
For more information about the forums, or to register for either of these events, please go to:

Electrogals 2010
Roll back
description |
Electrogals 2010 - Call & Response
All Women - All Electronic
The concert will showcase female electronic music performers from Portland and the West Coast, featuring synthesists, sonic explorers, deep listeners, circuit benders, and beat manglers. The performances will cover a wide range of styles, from beat-heavy song forms to abstract noise-generated soundscapes. Some of the performances will also include the audience, in ways that will definitely surprise and delight - and no, there won't be any embarrassing sing-alongs. Probably.
About the Electrogals series
Although there is nothing inherently manly about creating or performing electronic music, the female electronic musician is something of a rare bird. Electrogals 2010 will be the fourth in this series of showcases for women who have immersed themselves in this art form.
The first Electrogals show happened in 1995 at Mills College in Oakland, when composer Heather Perkins gathered a group of female electronic musicians for a show at the Mills Concert Hall. In 2004, Heather put on another Electrogals concert as part of the Sound/Craft music series at the Portland Museum of Contemporary Craft. In the spring of 2008, Heather Perkins, Mary Wright and Christi Denton put on an Electrogals concert at Holocene, filling both stages with an amazing lineup.
All compositions for Electrogals 2010 will be written by Portland composer and performer Heather Perkins, and performed by an all-star roster of female electronic music performers. |

Rapid Discussions
on
Any Topic
by
Anyone & Everyone
Instead of having a formal presentation, we will get together and
discuss anything anyone wants to discuss in brief sessions of no
more than a few minutes each. If we have enough people involved
we can break into smaller groups to handle each topic.
Two topics that I will be prepared to discuss for a few minutes
will be:
- Subsistence Computing
How to do good computing on a low budget.
- Could we lose the internet to Government and Corporate
interests?
AND YES - We are looking for speakers for upcoming months.
Volunteers and Recommendations are welcome.

EPISODE #6!

IEEE - The Impact of Resonant, Distributed, Frequency and Transmission Properties of Interconnects upon Nano-Scale VLSI Devices Reliability and Functionality

Title: The Impact of Resonant, Distributed, Frequency and Transmission Properties of Interconnects upon Nano-Scale VLSI Devices Reliability and Functionality
Speaker: Pavel Livshits, Bar Ilan University, Israel
When: Wednesday, March 31, 2010, 5:30 â 7:00pm
Where: Shiley Hall 124

Pavel Livshits from Bar Ilan University, Israel will present some of the findings of his doctoral research.
Abstract:
Rapid development of Systems-on-a-Chip (SoC) over the last decade has set tougher signal integrity requirements for on-die signal and power distribution networks. At the same time, only a very few experimental works have been conducted to study the properties of on-die interconnects constituting these networks.
In this talk, results obtained within the framework of our experimental study on global interconnects, constructed as transmission lines, that carry out on-die global signaling and on interconnects constituting power supply and ground grids, are presented. In the study we employed VLSI engineering samples typical for 90 nm and 45 nm CMOS technology nodes.
We found that local voltage fluctuations in power supply and ground grids, excited by on-die logic cell switching have a resonant-like form. This finding resolves the discussed in literature controversy over the need for considering parasitic inductance i.e., the on-die power grids should be described as an RLC circuit.
We experimentally observed and confirmed by modeling that the active element (i.e., CMOS logic cell) influences the frequency properties of power supply and ground grids during its switching (as opposed to before or after switching). Thus, it was shown that frequency properties of both grids are inter-related via the interconnecting active elements.
In our experimental study was found that the impedance matching between CMOS driver and a driven transmission line, and the Ohmic losses of on-die transmission lines, implemented by standard metal layers of modern technology nodes, play an important role in circuitsâ performance. The study suggests that impedance mismatch results in excessive power consumption and signal integrity problems. The high Ohmic losses result in a significant distortion and Inter-Symbol Interference of already a few hundreds Mega-Hertz signals.
Our study reveals that relatively low but repetitive voltage oscillations on on-die power supply and ground grids, excited by logic cells switching, may lead not only to logic faults, as it has been regarded, but also to an accumulated damage of VLSI MOSFETs. Thus, according to Berkley Reliability Tools models simulations they accelerate the device degradation due to three main wearout mechanisms, such as Time-Dependent Dielectric Breakdown, Negative Bias Temperature Instability and Hot Carrier Injection. The similar device damage, as the study shows, is caused by the impedance mismatch induced distortions of signals supplied to input of on-die CMOS logic cells.
