WikiWednesday - The Power of Naming in wikis and Wagn with John Abbe
Roll back
description |
The name you come up with for a wiki page has always been a critical part of wikis' power in creating meaning.[1] We'll be reviewing the history and background of WikiNames in general, and the further space for meaning-creation opened up by Wagn's plus cards. Probable forays into pattern languages, including a pattern language of group process under development. [2]
Wagn is a free/open source Ruby on Rails structured wiki, which wiki inventor Ward Cunningham called, "One of the freshest contributions to wiki since I coined the term".[3]
Come at 5:30 for drinks/snacks and the discussion will start at 6:15.
1. http://www.c2.com/cgi/wiki?ChoosingWikiNames
2. http://GroupPatternLanguage.org/
3. http://Wagn.org/
Facilitated by John Abbe - one of the designers of Wagn, and cited by Joshua Schachter as clarifying his thoughts in developing Delicious.com |
→ |
This WikiWednesday we'll hear John Abbe, a key designer of the structured wiki Wagn (http://Wagn.org), talk about the importance of naming in your community. Cited by Joshua Schachter as clarifying his thoughts in developing Delicious.com, John will cover concepts of ontology useful for all participatory online spaces, not just wikis.
We'll be reviewing the history and background of the WikiNames concept (http://www.c2.com/cgi/wiki?ChoosingWikiNames), and the further space for creating meaning opened up by Wagn's "plus cards". Other probable forays include Pattern Languages (http://GroupPatternLanguage.org/) , including a pattern language of group process under development.
As always, WikiWednesday is free and open to everyone, experienced wiki walker or beginner. Come at 5:30 for drinks/snacks and the discussion will start at 6:15. |

PLUG Advanced Topics: DRDB & Pacemaker part II by Adam Gandelman
Roll back
description |

→ |
DRBD stands for Distributed Replicated Block Device. Mainline in the Linux kernel since 2.6.33, it is used to replicate data at the block level over the network in a "network RAID1" fashion. It is generally deployed as a cost effective, shared-nothing alternative to a SAN and used as the building block for high availability clusters. Pacemaker is currently the de facto open-source cluster resource manager (CRM) for Linux HA clustering. With it, nodes and services can be monitored and managed to ensure maximum uptime in the face of the most severe service and hardware level failures. Combining the two allows admins to %99.999 uptime at a fraction of the price of proprietary alternatives.
In LINBIT's second PLUG Advance Topics installment, Adam Gandelman will give a more in-depth view of DRBD and Pacemaker and demonstrate how they work closely together to keep applications running and consistent. During the second half of the presentation, Adam will provide attendees with a real-world example by configuring a highly-available LAMP cluster from the ground up. Though geared toward web services, the concepts presented can easily be expanded to provide the HA gaurantee to virtually any Linux service.
Agenda: - Brief re-introduction to DRBD, Pacemaker and HA clustering concepts. - Overview of various use cases and interesting deployments - Configuration and implementation of a highly-available LAMP cluster using DRBD for data redundancy and Pacemaker for resource management.
Adam Gandelman is an expert in open-source clustering and high availability. Originally from New England, Adam lives in Portland, OR where he has been working at LINBIT, developers of DRBD and maintainers of Heartbeat. Aside from providing top-level Linux High-Availability and Disaster Recovery consulting for customers in the Americas, he leads LINBIT training courses in the US, doubles as a technical writer and regularly contributes to related open-source projects.

<b>NB: We're at a new location for Season 2.</b>
First episode of Season 2!
Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks!
TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on freenode. One commit a week is all we ask.

Galois Tech Talk: Typing Directories
Roll back
description |
Galois is pleased to host the following tech talk. These talks are open to the interested public. Please join us!
The talk will be held at
Galois Inc.
421 SW 6th Ave. Suite 300, Portland, OR, USA
(3rd floor of the Commonwealth building)
Typing Directories
Details:
* Presenter: Kathleen Fisher, AT&T Labs
* Date: Tuesday May 04, 2010
* Time: 10:30am
Title: Typing Directories
Abstract: PADS describes the contents of individual ad hoc data files, but has no provisions for describing collections of files, i.e., directories. In this talk, I explore examples where having a declarative description of directories as well as files would be useful, including websites, source code trees, source code control systems, operating systems, and scientific data sets. As part of this exploration, I identify essential features of a directory description language and useful tools that might be produced from such a description. I end with a series of questions about how such a language might most easily be implemented in the context of Haskell.
This is joint work with David Walker and Kenny Zhu.
Bio: (from http://www.research.att.com/people/Fisher_Kathleen_S) Kathleen Fisher is a Principal Member of the Technical Staff at AT&T Labs Research and a Consulting Faculty Member in the Computer Science Department at Stanford University. Kathleenâs research focuses on advancing the theory and practice of programming languages and on applying ideas from the programming language community to the problem of ad hoc data management. The main thrust of her work has been in domain-specific languages to facilitate programming with massive amounts of ad hoc data, including the Hancock system for efficiently building signatures from massive transaction streams and the PADS system for managing ad hoc data.
Kathleen is an ACM Distinguished Scientist. She has served as program chair for FOOL, CUFP, and ICFP. She is past Chair of the ACM Special Interest Group in Programming Languages (SIGPLAN), Co-Chair of CRAâs Committee on the Status of Women (CRA-W), and an editor of the Journal of Functional Programming. She is currently serving on the CRA Board. |

Fishbowl discussion of Agile software development
Roll back
description |
Join us for a discussion of topics related to agile software development! Audience participation strongly encouraged. Pizza is at 6:30; discussion starts at 7.
For those unfamiliar with the term, a fishbowl discussion works like fishbowl coding: there are a small number of people who are up
front and allowed to speak at any given time. If you want to ask a question or say something, swap in for one of the people up front. If you're up front and done speaking, sit back down in the audience.
Potential discussion topics include mock objects in testing; balancing ideology with reality; certification; no/low bugs in a codebase; contracting without being able to give a fixed bid. Or bring your own! We'll decide what we're discussing at the beginning of the meeting, but expect the conversation to wander. |

WikiWednesday - The Power of Naming in wikis and Wagn - John Abbe
Roll back
description |

Galois Tech Talk: Typing Directories

Galois is pleased to host the following tech talk. These talks are open to the interested public. Please join us!
The talk will be held at
Galois Inc.
421 SW 6th Ave. Suite 300, Portland, OR, USA
(3rd floor of the Commonwealth building)
Typing Directories
Details:
* Presenter: Kathleen Fisher, AT&T Labs
* Date: Tuesday May 04, 2010
* Time: 10:30am

Executive team members from a recently funded medical device company will share insight into today’s investment landscape. Intended to provide C-level technology professionals an inside look at creating a winning diligence package, the discussion will be uniquely focused on maintaining an edge while engaging investors and working the process to the advantage of the company. Specific attention will be given to planning, positioning and focus at the various stages of investment including the initial approach, management of the “due dilly” process and orchestration of a successful close.
Speaker bios:
Michael J. Baker
Mr. Baker has 27 years of executive management experience, including merger and acquisitions with Philips Medical, Lockheed Martin and GE. He has launched multiple entrepreneurial ventures in the medical device, medical IT and clean tech industries. Bring your toys for others to see, or come see what others have been painstakingly chipping away at in their spare time. Whether it's code or chips, hacking of all sorts is encouraged. But we also like to hear your crazy ideas, so please come join us and bring your willingness to share your brilliance. We'll be the kids with all the coolest stuff on the table. Hope to see you there. |
