Rather than posting content on many third-party silos of data, we should all begin owning our own data that we're creating. Publish short status updates on your own domain, and syndicate to Twitter. Publish photos on your own domain, syndicate to Flickr, etc, etc.
This is the basis of the "Indie Web" movement. We'll get together for a day and a half to talk about what has been done in the field, and where still needs to be done. There will be workshops and breakout sessions the second day.
For some reading on the subject, browse Tantek's documentation of his projects like Whistle and Falcon, two projects he created as an effort to begin owning his own published content.
Hosted by Tantek Ãelik, Aaron Parecki and Amber Case. |

The event is open to everyone interested in or working in the field of data visualization. This means designers, programmers, information architects, data miners, anthropologists, ect. We expect around 20-30 people each event.
---Note to newcomers---
If you haven't been to Webtrends before, you might have a difficult time gaining access to the building. Please E-mail me for detailed instructions on how to enter the building, and a phone number you can reach to gain access once inside.
---Google Group---
Ed Borasky started a Google group called pdx-visualization. As the name implies, it is a group for Portland-area people interested in languages and techniques for visualization of data. http://groups.google.com/group/pdx-visualization. |

Process Orienated Communication --- New Commuication Technology for Technical People
Roll back

Let's experiment new technology for relationship!
WELCOME! Welcome to world of connections! Even if you are not network expert CONNECTION is EVERYTHING.
You are so smart to read this. This is one of my answer to âIs there easier and cooler way to learn relationships?â.
I had so many troubles about relationships. Personal romantic, sexual connections and work place. Human being science developed so much. There must be new technology and practice to make things easier even cool way for me.
I as Tree huger computer system engineer fascinated by transpersonal psychology and Process Oriented Ecology, Non Violent Communication and Deep Democracy. And I would like to mesh up and introduce for cool technical people.
And as you know, RELATIONSIP IS EVERYTHING!
This new technology to inspire you about relationships and human connections is well designed for people who are very functioning in technical area and interested in improving relationship, communication, human connection skills and art.

PDX Weekly Hackathon - ---
Roll back
| description |
Come do strange things with computers amongst others whilst drinking fine Portland beer. Look for the row of geeks with computers in the back of the main room.
All programming languages welcome. Come work on your own projects, work on others participants' projects, get advice, have fun, etc.
You're encouraged to bring a computer, but can team up with others that brought one too.
Afterwards, the group descends on the 12th and Hawthorne foodcart pod for additional nourishment.
Also, many people meet up at the pub during the same time as the hackathon to play boardgames they bring which you're welcomed to play. |

Digital Journalism PDX: Journalism and the Future of Mobile with Jason Grigsby
Roll back
| description |
|
→ |
There's an aphorism that's making the rounds these days in journalism circles that goes something like this: News organizations are treating mobile like they did print and the Web 10 years ago. In other words, they're acting like mobile - with all its different facets - is just the Web on a smaller screen.
That may be an oversimplification, but it zeros in on a major problem: What the heck are we doing when it comes to smartphones, apps, different mobile operating systems, feature phones, tablets, and on and on? At the next Digital Journalism Social Hour, Portland's Jason Grigsby is going to help us try and get a handle on that question. |

Lunar Eclipse Meetup
Roll back
| description |

Come and freeze your tushie off for science! A total lunar eclipse will mark the solstice this year. Bring binoculars, telescopes, cameras, and hot drinks.
From NASA:
"Early in the morning on December 21 a total lunar eclipse will be visible to sky watchers across North America (for observers in western states the eclipse actually begins late in the evening of December 20), Greenland and Iceland. Viewers in Western Europe will be able to see the beginning stages of the eclipse before moonset, and in western Asia the later stages of the eclipse will be visible after moonrise.
From beginning to end, the eclipse will last about three hours and twenty-eight minutes. For observers on the east coast of the U.S. the eclipse lasts from 1:33am EST through 5:01 a.m. EST. Viewers on the west coast will be able to tune in a bit earlier. For them the eclipse begins at 10:33 p.m. PST on December 20 and lasts until 2:01am PST on Dec. 21. Totality, the time when Earth's shadow completely covers the moon, will last a lengthy 72 minutes."

Drinking and Drawing

Drinking and Drawing is an evening of collaborative animation. Each participant has 10 minutes to draw 8 frames of animation, leaving their last frame for the next person to start with. In between rounds at the light boxes, we socialize with other members of the animation community, watch some short films, and, of course, have a drink or two. Come to draw, come to drink, come to hang out and have a good time! |

LinkedIn Marketing Webinar
Roll back
| description |

LinkedIn can be a fantastic marketing tool. The problem is that very few people really understand how to market themselves effectively on LinkedIn without looking like spammers.
Iâve gotten a few hundred thousand dollars worth of business from people who found me on LinkedIn. In this webinar Iâll show you how I did it and how I use LinkedIn to promote some of my clients.
This is what youâll learn:
- The most common mistake people make on LinkedIn (and how you can avoid it).
- How to create a profile that actually gets peopleâs attention (this is extremely important).
- How you can get dozens of recommendations (and why this makes all the difference).
- How you can get people to trust you and refer business to you.
- The one thing I spend 5 minutes per week on and gets me 200 visitors a day.
- How you can position yourself as the #1 authority in your field (imagine being able to choose what clients you want to take and which one you want to turn down.)
- How to promote events on LinkedIn.
- How to use LinkedInâs advertising program to get your company in front of people you couldnât reach any other way.
