This is a CSS deep-dive directed discussion. CSS can be more complex than many realize. From crafting selectors, pseudo-selectors, selector specificity, performance, and cross browser fixes - there is plenty to discuss.
David McFarland, author of "CSS: The Missing Manual" and other web books has been good enough to provide some of his CSS and Dreamweaver books to give away at the talk.
If you are a meetup.com member, please RSVP on that site (not required, just a nicety). |

Flex and Maven - a joint event by Thetus Corporation and PDXRIA User Group
Roll back
description |

→ |
Join us Thursday, September 16, for food, networking and a look at building and deploying Flex applications with Maven. We invite experienced Flex application developers to bring their resumes and meet Thetus Flex developers.
Building and deploying complex Flex applications is a challenge. How
do you ensure repeatable builds that are correct on multiple platforms
and in multiple IDEs? Maven is one tool that has been long used in
the Java community to provide application lifecycle (build, test,
deploy) functionality that is standard across projects. By utilizing
a common filesystem layout and a predefined set of goals or targets
(the Project Object Model, POM), you can easily move between
projects without having to learn the intricacies of each project's
build and deployment setup. Modern IDEs such as Eclipse and IDEA have
support for loading Maven POM files and configuring projects
automatically. Recent additions to Maven (flex-mojos) allow this same
power to be applied to Flex as well. I'll show practical examples of
how Maven works in a mixed Java/Flex project that deploys to the
Amazon cloud.
Christopher Mason is a Flex developer at Thetus corporation. A
refugee from bioinformatics, Christopher has focused for more than 10 years
on building applications that aren't afraid of large information sets
and that scale both from a technology and a user-understanding
perspective.
Meeting starts at 6 PM. Food and networking at 5:30 PM sponsored by Thetus Corporation in association with the PDXRIA User Group.
RSVP: http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/6735069/OR/Portland/Flex-and-Maven-a-joint-event-by-Thetus-Corporation-and-PDXRIA-User-Group/Thetus-Corporation/

TechAmerica Talent Management Workshop: Tools for the Twenty First Century Workforce
Roll back
description |

→ |
About the Workshop:
The twenty first century is a knowledge worker driven era. New methods of managing acquiring, nurturing and retaining talent will be essential for a competitive organization. In this half-day workshop, a series of presenters will bring tools every HR leader should have in their toolkit and executive should hear.
Session 1 (8:00 – 9:00 a.m.):
From Start-Up to High-Growth: Shaping a Culture for Success
The shift from a start-up culture has caused many promising companies to stumble. EthicsPoint president and CEO David Childers will present the step-by-step process his company took to consciously reconstruct its corporate culture. This two-year-long project has helped EthicsPoint exceed growth and revenue expectations and position itself for international expansion.
Session 2 (9:00 – 10:00 a.m.)
Turning the Job They Have Into the Job They Want
For many companies the downturn has stalled growth, which in turn has left employees feeling “stuck” in their jobs. This dissatisfaction can be especially difficult in technology companies where employees are attracted to working fast paced growth and changing environments. Via Skype, Dr. Jane Dutton from University of Michigan will share the Job Crafting Exercise, a low cost, powerful tool that the Center for Positive Organizational Scholarship has developed.
Session 3 (10:15 – 11:15 a.m.)
Performance Appraisals – The Next Act
Few issues in management stir up more controversy than performance appraisal.
There are many reputable sources - researchers, management commentators, psychometricians - who have expressed doubts about the validity and reliability of the performance appraisal process. Some have even suggested that the process is so inherently flawed that it may be impossible to perfect it. At the other extreme, there are many strong advocates of performance appraisal. Some view it as potentially the most crucial aspect of organizational life (Lawrie, 1990). Dr. Steve Hunt will talk about how the performance management process is shifting from an administrative process used to justify pay decisions to a forward focused tool for enabling business execution.

Legal Holds: What You Donât Know Could Cost You
Roll back

Do you know what makes an effective legal hold? Do you even know what a legal hold is? Attend this webinar by leading national expert Brad Harris to learn what your company needs to do now to be ready for its next legal hold.
When the possibility of litigation or regulatory investigation arises, a legal hold is the first step a company must take as part of a duty to preserve potentially-relevant data. A legal hold is a notification directing employees to save pertinent information and data. Do it right and itâs a smooth process with little impact on your business. Do it wrong and it can severely compromise your case. No matter the size of your company, legal holds are a necessary reality.
2010 has been a watershed year for cases involving legal holds with the Courts have been issuing monetary sanctions and declarations of âgross negligenceâ in numerous cases. This webcast will review recent legal hold cases starting with Januaryâs Pension Committee v. Banc of America Securities, Rimkus v. Cammarata, Crown Castle v. Nudd Corp., Jones v. Bremen HS and other recent cases that are driving the need for making legal holds a priority in any litigation.
This timely program will address:
- Recent directions and trends in case law

- Best practices for recognizing and responding to a duty to preserve

Portland Perl Mongers -- Modern Perl + Test::Builder 2
Roll back
description |

speakers: chromatic and Michael Schwern
This meeting will be two shorter presentations back-to-back. The Modern Perl talk is broadly targetted at beginners and everyday general usage concepts while the Test::Builder 2 talk will delve much deeper into particular details of Perl's testing system.
chromatic on Modern Perl
Perl masters talk about strange subjects such as whipupitude, manipulexity, context, lexicals, and linguistic principles. It may seem that you must be a wizard to apply these notions to your code and dexterously wield Perl's essential strengths. In truth, these ideas and idioms are deceptively simple: you use them every day when you read or write plain English.
Demystifying the linguistic concepts in Perl opens up the doors of Perl mastery. Come learn the philosophy behind Perl's design in order to understand Perl and how to use its unique isms to improve your code.
Schwern on Test::Builder2
Test::Builder is what most Test modules are written with these days. It lets them quietly coordinate with each other and frees the authors from having to worry about the details. It was written in 2001 and in that decade there's been an explosion of testing modules.
A decade later, Test::Builder is starting to show its age and limitations. Its assumptions and biases are restraining the Perl testing community. Perl has moved on, too. When Test::Builder was written, testing was still a "new" thing. Now it's a given. We have a real object system now and a sophisticated community to take advantage.
Enter Test::Builder2. A total rewrite of Test::Builder to remove its biases and let test authors do whatever they can dream up while still being the solid iron core of Perl testing and remaining compatible with Test::Builder. It takes advantage of things like Mouse (that's a small Moose), method wrappers and roles. Counter-intuitively, it does less than Test::Builder does while providing more opportunities.
Schwern has a grant for Test::Builder2 from the Perl Foundation and if he doesn't release something by October they'll break his legs. So he's hoping to generate some contributors by showing off the design and code!
As always, the meeting will be followed by social hour at the Lucky Lab.

PRESENTATION
An Overview of
Berkley DB
by
David Segleau
Director Product Management - Berkeley DB
Berkeley DB originated at the University of California,
Berkeley as part of the transition (1986 to 1994) from 4.3BSD
to 4.4BSD and of the effort to remove AT&T-encumbered code.
It has evolved a great deal since then and is now part
of Oracle where it is distributed with source code under
a dual use license.
Berkeley DB (BDB) is a computer software library that provides
a high-performance embedded database, with bindings in C, C++,
PHP, Java, Perl, Python, Ruby, Tcl, Smalltalk, and other languages.
BDB stores arbitrary key/data pairs as byte arrays, and supports
multiple data items for a single key. BDB can support thousands
of simultaneous threads of control or concurrent processes
manipulating databases as large as 256 terabytes, on a wide
variety of operating systems including most Unix-like and
Windows systems, and real-time operating systems. |

Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks!
TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on freenode. One commit a week is all we ask.

<h2>IEEE Workshop on The Smart Grid - from Appliance to Generator and Back</h2>
Sponsors: IEEE Region 6 and Oregon Section
Co-Sponsored by Oregon Power and Energy and Computer Society Chapters
<b>Date: September 8, 2010</b>
Venue: Ambridge Event Center, Portland, Oregon; see <a href="http://www.ambridgeevents.com/">"www.ambridgeevents.com"</a>
<b>An IEEE Oregon âSmart Grid Weekâ (September 8-10) event</b>
<b>READ <a href="http://bit.ly/bQYhzE">"FULL PROGRAM DESCRIPTION PDF"</a></b>
A one day workshop with reception of how the Smart Grid provides interactions between the end uses of electricity ("appliances" or industrial processes) and utilities, viewed from the perspective of the technologies, standards, and policies that will enable those interactions and foster innovation and interoperability.
The Smart Grid marries the electrical grid, an extremely complex system based on mature, conservative technology, with two fast moving innovative technologies, computers and communications. It is one of the greatest electrical, electronic and information processing challenges of our time and represents a significant engineering opportunity over the next two decades and beyond. It captures information about supply, system demand, individual usage, and pricing that fundamentally shifts how electricity is used. It enables the operators of the power system to increase efficiency and reliability while reducing costs and empowering consumers of electricity to minimize their own electricity costs.
<b>Learning Objectives:</b>
Attendees will gain an understanding of the monitoring, communications, security and control systems of the Smart Grid, how they interact, the flow of data and control, and design and implementation considerations including:
</ul><li>Information requirements for optimal control of generating capacity, regional transmission grids, and municipal distribution grids to meet end user demands.</li>
<li>How generation, transmission and distribution control systems utilize digital information.</li>
<li>How suppliers and distributors of electricity use information to minimize costs while increasing reliability, flexibility, and security.</li>
<li>How usage monitoring and automation will allow end users to make informed decisions that reduce their electricity costs.</li>
<li>How to ensure grid security.</li>
<li>Balancing optimization of the gridâs subsystems and the grid as a whole.</li></ul>
<b>Target Audience:</b>
The target audience is engineers, policy makers, and entrepreneurs who want to understand the Smart Grid in order to make better professional, technical and business decisions.
<b>Prerequisites:</b>

Portland Retro Gaming Expo

The Portland Retro Gaming Expo is an annual exhibition of classic video games and systems in Portland, Oregon. We aim to recognize the history of video game systems and their authors, manufacturers and players.
That said, the classic game collecting hobby is most closely associated with the Atari 2600/5200/7800, Nintendo NES and SNES systems, Sega Master System/Genesis, and other systems released in the 1980s and early 1990s. One can expect to see these systems as well as many lesser-known systems at the Retro Gaming Expo.
In addition to home systems, we have had a larger showing of full-size arcade games to play. |
