December 9th Rose City SPIN Seminar Announcement:
Beyond Acceptance Testing
Presented by BJ Clark
Dates/Times: Thursday, December 9th, 2010; Networking @ 6:00 PM; Seminar 7:00-8:00 PM
Location: HF3 Auditorium, Intel Hawthorne Farms 3 (HF3) Campus, 5200 NE Elam Young Pkwy, Hillsboro, OR 97124 - View Map
Directions: From Cornell, head South on NE Elam Young Pkwy (near Costco). Take the first left to turn into the Intel parking lot. The HF3 campus will be directly in front of you. Parking is available on both sides of the building. See image below for detailed route.
Abstract
Fit, Fitness, and Cucumber have revolutionized development and brought the idea of acceptance-level testing and "Outside-in-development" to a whole community of developers, testers and product owners. But can we take the idea of acceptance testing to another level and test things other than the "correctness" of our software? What if we could also specify and test the quality of interaction in our applications? What if we could involve a whole other community of people, interaction designers and user experience professionals, in not just the ideation of our products, but the actual execution of the software itself? In beyond acceptance testing, we'll look into who could be writing acceptance tests and all the things that we could be testing that most of us currently aren't doing.

PDX Web: Lightning Talks!
Roll back
description |
We're going to try something a little different for the holidays, at a different time and different location, so make a note!
Rather than a specific topic with one speaker, we're going to do some lightning talks. In a nutshell, ANYONE can stand up and do a short 5 minute presentation about any topic they wish (preferably relevant to our group, but if you really want to talk about your cats...). Every speaker will be given be 5 minutes (by clock) with a 1 minute warning before the end. Slides are allowed, but not required. Props are welcome!
Here's some ideas:
* Projects you're working on
* A new toolkit you're excited about
* A new methodology you've developed
* Books/Websites you highly recommend
* A public rant/praise about our group
* Hassles of writing books (hint, Dave... hint...)
* Anything, really
if you've never done a lightning talk, here's a good thing to read: http://selenadelesie.com/2010/06/30/try-a-lightning-talk/
Please post/email your topic if you plan to present. We may be able to fit in 12-15 in a reasonable time.
We're meeting across the river at "Abstract Machines", off Ladd's Rose Gardens Circle and Squares. This won't be hard to get into - and a little more of a party atmosphere than our normal structure. Food and drinks are welcome/encouraged.

Personal Telco Project Birthday and New Node Work Party
Roll back
description |
Come celebrate Personal Telco's 10th birthday, but plugging in another node!
http://www.personaltelco.net/~russell/the-beginning.txt
Ten years ago to the day, Adam Shand, inspired by a slashdot article on Consume.net in London, wrote a message to the Portland Linux Users Group mailing list. That message got Personal Telco off the ground, and it's been flying (sometimes eating some pine cones) ever since. Come help it gain some more altitude and soar with you into the future!
We'll be plugging in a new rooftop node out in the depths of Beaverton at about 12 noon tomorrow. It shouldn't take too long, so don't be too late or we'll be all done when you get there.
Where: 16475 SW Cynthia Street, Beaverton OR 97007
When: Noon, Sunday, November 28, 2010 until 1 or 2pm
We are going to be attaching another of the Ubiquiti Bullet M2HP's toUbiquiti Bullet M2HP's to a 5 foot mast on the roof, attached to a WgtCab inside. Come join the fun, watch, learn, participate!
Ask not what free wifi can do for you, ask what you can do for free wifi! |

Presentation
Open Source Desktop Publishing
with
Scribus
by
John Jason Jordan
Scribus is just a few years old, but has already achieved
most of the features of the expensive commercial desktop
publishing apps, and a few they don't have. If you need to
do fliers, brochures, or whole books, Scribus is now the
preferred tool.
The presentation will start with a brief introduction to
some of the terms of desktop publishing, especially how to
get your computer to produce something that a print shop can
put on a press. This will include matters such as typography,
color management, banding and line screens, transparency,
imposition, and several other issues.
Then we will spend a few minutes on an overview of Scribus,
how it is different from word processors, TeX, and advantages
and disadvantages. This will include the basic features of
Scribus, including typographical controls, master pages, render
frames, PDF forms, PDF export options, scripting, collect for
output, and lots more. It will also cover how Scribus is the
end tool in a process that starts with other programs.
Finally we will reproduce the PLUG flier that was created
in Scribus. This will be presented on the screen showing
the steps and features of Scribus necessary to produce it.
Each member of the audience will have a paper copy of the
flier to assist in following the process.

Random Hacks of Kindness Seattle
Roll back
description |

→ |
+) GWOBorg and Tropo are joining forces with Random Hacks of Kindness to participate in a global hackathon — a marathon hacking event with multiple global locations bringing together developers from all over the world to hack on real-world problems relating to natural disaster risk and response.
Jigsaw Renaissance in Seattle is graciously hosting the Seattle hackathon and invites developers and coders in the Seattle area to join forces and hack for the global good - interested participants can sign up on this Eventbrite!
What is this Hackathon Event?
The International Open Data Hackathon is the first of its kind in the world - the Open Data Hackathon coincides perfectly with the RHOK, so both hackathons will take place at Jigsaw throughout the 24 hours.
RHOK includes subject matter experts from organizations around the world (if that's you then we want you too!), who are right now defining and refining real-world problems into concrete problem definitions ready for hackery magic.
When and Where for the Hackathon?
The second global #RHoK hackathon event takes place around the world on December 4- 5, 2010. Jigsaw Renaissance, a Seattle hacker and maker space, is hosting the event. Tropo.com is sponsoring food and drinks throughout the Seattle event and developers and participants are invited to use join the community and use Jigsaw space throughout the hackathon.
The event starts at 9:00am GMT on December 4th and ends December 5th at 8:00pm GMT.
Who Else is Hacking for Humanity?
Seattle joins Aarhus, Nairobi, Sao Paulo, Chicago, Bangalore, New York, Lusaka, Berlin, Toronto, Bogota, Atlanta, Jakarta, Birmingham and Open Data camps, connected over the weekend through live video streaming channels, chat servers, Skype, Twitter, blogs, photo and video sharing as we collaborate across time zones, international borders and languages to “hack for humanity” – developing software solutions that will save lives and alleviate suffering.
We Need You
This event all comes down to you - we need your participation and support: sign up, and become part of something truly globally awesome! |

Frank Helle, CEO of Axian, Inc., will lead an interactive discussion about the art and science of negotiation. Attendees will learn how to leverage their instincts for more bargaining power when negotiating. Share with other CEOs your experiences, insights and frustrations from past transactions and gain strategies for more successful future outcomes.

You also will receive a high-level recap of the discussion and an application of these principles to a participant’s current transaction.
Open only to CEOs or Presidents of currently operating companies that have employees. Boxed lunch will be served. This program is limited to 12 participants, and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Galois Tech Talk: The Rubinius Virtual Machine
Roll back
description |
Presented by Brian Ford
Ruby is a highly dynamic, strongly-typed programming language created by Yukihiro Matsumoto in 1993 and first released in 1995. It borrows from Smalltalk, Lisp, and Perl. Ruby has single inheritance, mixins, and syntax features like omission of parentheses that make it well-suited for embedded domain-specific languages. Ruby was popularized by the Ruby on Rails web development framework.
The Rubinius project began as an implementation of the Ruby programming language roughly following the design of the Smalltalk-80 virtual machine described in the Blue book (âSmalltalk-80: the language and its implementationâ by Adele Goldberg and David Robson). We have extended the initial implementation based on modern research in virtual machines, garbage collectors, and just-in-time (JIT) compilers. Rubinius currently features a stack-oriented opcode virtual machine, generational garbage collector, and LLVM-based JIT compiler. Most of the Ruby core library and the bytecode compiler are written in Ruby.
We will examine the main features of Rubinius and take a deeper dive into some aspects of the virtual machine and JIT compiler. We will also look at possible future work to address memory load, startup, and suitability for using Rubinius in Android phones. If there is time and interest, we will discuss implementing programming languages besides Ruby on Rubinius. |

Processing is an open source programming language and environment for people who want to create images, animations, and interactions. During this workshop we will explore this environment and make some fun graphics! This workshop is aimed at people with little to no programming experience who want a playground to explore programming and graphics and for experienced programmers that just want an overview of what processing offers.

* Projects you're working on
* A new toolkit you're excited about
* A new methodology you've developed
* Books/Websites you highly recommend
* A public rant/praise about our group
* Hassles of writing books (hint, Dave... hint...)
* Anything, really
if you've never done a lightning talk, here's a good thing to read: http://selenadelesie.com/2010/06/30/try-a-lightning-talk/
