Part 2: The shifting paradigm of how to firewall with IPv6. With IPv4, just about everyone uses NAT as a poor-mans firewall. update Calagator::Event 1250460617 3rd Workshop on I/O Virtualization (WIOV '11) Roll back

description Join us in Portland, OR, on June 14, 2011, for the 3rd Workshop on I/O Virtualization. Virtualization technology has grown beyond server systems to include desktops, notebooks, and even mobile devices. The rich settings in which virtualized systems are used range from cloud computing infrastructures requiring access to high-end I/O devices like GPUs and networks to the many devices present in embedded and mobile systems. While I/O systems have a long history of using abstraction to shield applications from the intricacies of devices and storage systems, the WIOV '11 workshop's focus is on the interplay of I/O with virtualization and cloud technologies. Our goal is to provide a forum to discuss the impact and challenges of I/O virtualization along multiple dimensions. update Calagator::Event 1250460616 3rd USENIX Workshop on Hot Topics in Storage and File Systems (HotStorage '11) Roll back

description Join us in Portland, OR, on June 14, 2011, for the 3rd USENIX Workshop on Hot Topics in Storage and File Systems. Storage systems continue to present important research challenges and opportunities today. The rapid increase in the volume and variety of digital data, the trend toward using commodity components rather than custom-built hardware, the ability to insert new filesystem functionality transparently in hypervisors, the emergence of persistent storage memory technologies, the challenges of "big data," the rise of distributed key-value stores (such as nosql), aand the proliferation of storage devices in consumer electronics all offer exciting opportunities and new challenges. The HotStorage workshop aims to bring together researchers interested in presenting their thoughts and engaging in discussions with their colleagues. update Calagator::Event 1250460615 3rd USENIX Workshop on Hot Topics in Cloud Computing (HotCloud '11) Roll back

description Join us in Portland, OR, June 14–15, 2011, for the 3rd USENIX Workshop on Hot Topics in Cloud Computing. HotCloud brings together researchers and practitioners from academia and industry working on cloud computing technologies. Cloud computing has evolved over the years from a basic IT infrastructure (data centers) to platform as a service (PaaS), and it includes both software as a service (SaaS) and enabling services to be deployed on a hosted infrastructure (IaaS). We believe that cloud computing will benefit from close interaction between researchers and industry practitioners, so that the research can inform current deployments and deployment challenges can inform new research. In support of this, HotCloud will provide a forum for both academics and practitioners to share their experience, leverage each other's perspectives, and identify new/emerging "hot" trends in this important area. description This month we are putting a twist on the Design Jam -- we will be jamming with dangerous ideas. We will start with three design problems, then select and describe one problem to jam on. We'll work in small groups to create potentially dangerous or controversial design solutions. At the end the small groups will pitch their ideas and sketches back to the larger group. Come convince us that your dangerous idea is a good one! Everyone is welcome -- designers and non-designers alike. This is a casual, non-sponsored workshop. Feel free to bring snacks or drinks to share. This month we are putting a twist on the Design Jam -- we will be jamming with dangerous ideas. update Calagator::Event 1250460599 Portland State Aeronautics Society Rocket Launch Roll back

description PSU students like rockets. Portland's premier rocket club is scheduling a public rocket launch in the Oregon high desert. This is the fourth launch of our third generation rocket. We expect to reach about 14,000 feet and to break the sound barrier! It's a 12 foot tall aluminum and fiberglass rocket that burns almost 15 pounds of fuel! If you've never seen a large(ish) rocket launch this could be your chance! This will be very similar to our last launch in October, but with new flight computer electronics. Read about our last launch here: http://psas.pdx.edu/news/2010-10-17-2/ Brothers is a long way from anywhere, we come in on Saturday and camp. You're welcome to join us. For the less adventurous (there are no amenities, bring your own water and food) you can stay in Bend and drive in -- it's about 45 minutes -- on Sunday morning. Directions to the launch site: http://www.oregonrocketry.com/?page_id=78 **NOTE** this is currently a tentative launch date. More information will be posed on our home page at http://psas.pdx.edu as we get closer to the date.
