This will be a pretty casual meeting, but still worthwhile. Bryan Armstrong said he could speak a bit on the new parallel collections support in Scala 2.9. Thomas Lockney may quickly show off a basic Akka demo, but that's looking iffy at this point. If you have anything else you'd like to come talk about, feel free to do so!
If you haven't been to the BankSimple office before, we have a space in the UrbanAirship building. |

Awesome Mobile Web Tools and Frameworks â Mobile Portland
Roll back
| description |
Interested in building apps using core web technologyâHTML5, Javascript and CSS?
Then you donât want to miss Mobile Portland this month as we take a look at three awesome tools and frameworks for mobile web development.
Weâre pleased to welcome James Pearce, Brian LeRoux and Patrick Mueller to Portland. Theyâve graciously agreed to take time out from their busy OSCON schedules to talk to us about:
* World Premiere! Client-side data-bound mobile charting with Sencha Touch
* Cloud-based app binaries using PhoneGap Build.
* Weinre: a remote debugger for web pages on mobile device.
If youâre doing any mobile web development work, these are tools you need to know about. And given the number of apps that include embedded web views, it means nearly everyone is doing some sort of mobile web development.
<b>Special OSCON Note</b>
Mobile Portland is a free monthly meeting open to anyone. If you are in town for OSCON, please feel free to join us. All that we ask is that you RSVP so we know how many chairs we need.
You can take the MAX train for free from the convention center and then take a short walk (.4 mi) to the meeting location.
If youâre a Portlander who isnât attending OSCON, you should! Not only is the largest open source conference, but there are mobile tracks with detailed presentations from Patrick Mueller and two of Brian LeRouxâs Nitobi colleagues.
About the Speakers
<b>Brian LeRoux, Nitobi SPACELORD!1!!, PhoneGap Contributor, Mobile Web Enthusiast, Tolerant of JavaScript, Trucker Mouth</b>
Brian LeRoux is the lead at Nitobi Software with the prestigious title SPACELORD!1!! He also has the dubious distinction of being the creator of wtfjs.com despite a twisted love for the language of the web. To make matters worse he actually has a non-breaking space tattoo.
Aside all these ridiculous distractions he is also responsible for leading the direction on the wildly popular PhoneGap software project that has the audacious goal to provide a web platform complete with device APIs for all smartphone operating systems.
<b>James Pearce, Senior Director of Developer Relations, Sencha</b>
James is a technologist, writer, developer & entrepreneur who has been working with the mobile web for over a decade. He is Senior Director of Developer Relations at Sencha. Previously he was the CTO at dotMobi and has a background in mobile startups, telecoms infrastructure and management consultancy.
He speaks extensively on the topic of mobile web development, and has written books for both Wiley and Wrox.James led the development of mobiForge, DeviceAtlas and ready.mobi, and is the creator of tinySrc, the WordPress Mobile Pack, and WhitherApps. He has declared every year since 1997 to be "The Year of the Mobile Web" - and feels like he might finally be right.
<b>Patrick Mueller, WebKit contributor, IBM</b>
Patrick Mueller is a software developer at IBM in the Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina. Heâs been working on web software and mobile software for a long time. Donât ask how long, unless you want to hear about how great it was to use Smalltalk for web and mobile software development.

Portland Java User Group: JSON Libraries
Roll back
| description |
This month's topic: Comparing JSON libraries
JSON has become the de-facto data interchange format for Internet web services. We'll examine open source libraries that make it easy for a Java developer to serialize objects to JSON. This presentation will include a discussion of three popular Java libraries ( json.org, Jackson, and GSON ) as well as a popular Scala library (lift-json).
----------
Speaker: Sean Sullivan
Sean is a software engineer specializing in web services development, mobile applications, and supply chain management systems. Sean works on e-commerce projects at Gilt Groupe's Portland office. Sean is an Apache Software Foundation committer and has contributed to various open source projects, including the OAuth Java library.
----------
PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :)
Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't *have* to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. Go ahead and just show up!
Many people also go for a drink and further discussion following the meeting, usually at Tree's restaurant in building lobby.

Here is a good link to what typically happens in a QS meetup:http://quantifiedself.com/how-to-start-your...
I am excited about meeting other people and learning what otherpeople are tracking or are interested in tracking and why.
I will bring a few gadgets and devices that people can play with:a fitbit, the zeo, the bodymedia armband, the emwave2 heartrate variability gadget.
I can talk about the various apps and services that I use or like: fitbit, zeo, 750words.com, healthmonth.com, quantter.com,gottafeeling app on the iphone, runkeeper, etc...
Also, tentatively, if the time works, Aaron Parecki @aaronpk from Geoloqi.com is going to talk about his self trackingexperiments using Geoloqi.
If we get a lot of people interested, I can look for a differentvenue than Lucky Lab. Any ideas?

Lunch 2.0 at OpenSesame
Roll back
| description |
OpenSesame wants to have you over for lunch and good conversation. Did you know they took the <a href="http://siliconflorist.com/2011/03/17/shazam-voila-alakazam-opensesame-wins-oen-angel-oregon-2011-4tell-walks-crowd-favorite/">top prize at OEN Angel Oregon back in March</a>?
Now you do, so you have a conversation starter.
Update: Iâm told Google Maps and GPS directions are a bit flakey for the address, especially if youâre coming from the West. So, for clarification, OpenSesame is in the Portland State Business Accelerator, which is at the intersection of SW Corbett and SW Meade. Need more help? Here are <a href="http://www.psba.pdx.edu/drivingdirections">driving directions from the PSBA</a>.
Are you vegan or vegetarian? Please leave a comment so we can plan food accordingly. Thanks.
Wondering what <a href="http://lunch20.com/">Lunch 2.0</a> is?
Lunch 2.0 is a phenomenon that began in Silicon Valley. You can read about their current events and the history behind Lunch 2.0 at lunch20.com.
We imported the concept to Portland in 2007, and you can follow all things Portland Lunch 2.0 at the <a href="http://siliconflorist.com/tags/lunch20/">Silicon Florist</a>. |
