Pitch Club
Roll back
| description |
Want to practice your startup pitch in front of people who've done it before? Crave the harsh criticism of your peers? Need the validation of seeing what works and what doesn't in other pitches?
Bring your 3 minute pitch. Put your name in a hat and if it gets picked, you're on. Powerpoints discouraged - just pitch. Then, answer questions and listen to painfully honest feedback from a panel of so-called experts.
The first rule of Pitch Club is you HAVE TO PITCH.
The second rule of Pitch Club is you HAVE TO PITCH. It doesn't have to be your startup - pitch your blog, your ideas for turning cat feces into gold, or your plan for world domination.
More rules as we think of them.
FAQ:
Q: Who are these so-called experts and what are they going to do to me?
A: Your pitch will be evaluated by entrepreneurs and people who pitch for a living. They are your superiors.
Q: What about NDAs? Someone's going to steal my idea!
A: There are no NDAs - use your best judgment about what to talk about and what not to. Also, remember the first rule of fight club - don't talk about fight club. We're all on the honor system here.
Q: My pitch is more than 3 minutes - can I have more time?
A: No.
Q: Will it be catered?
A: Hell no. You know what's in the lobster bisque.
Q: Can anyone critique a pitch?
A: No, only the panel. |

OEN Webinar: 7 Reasons to Replace a CEO
Roll back
| description |
As a startup CEO, do you know the things your investors are monitoring to determine whether or not you get to keep your job? Some of them may be metrics from your official business plan, but many are not.
If you want your company to succeed, and for you to succeed along with it - know the 7 deadly sins to avoid - the 7 reasons why Boards replace the CEO - and then youâll know how to avoid them. Gerry has had the pleasure of working with many successful start-up CEOs, and the duty along the way to part company with some who were not so successful. Get it straight from the VC's mouth...
Speaker: Gerry Langeler, OVP. |

Expect to meet engineers from Puppet Labs, VMware, RackSpace Cloud, openstack and other organizations in this industry. There will also be swag, like books and t-shirts.
The Portland DevOps User Group and the Portland AWS User Group meet regularly to discuss these sorts of topics, see http://pdxdevops.org/ and http://pawsug.janrain.com/ for details.

The building entrance is on SW Columbia between 2nd and 3rd Avenue. The door may be locked, but there's a guard on site that will let you in and you can use the doorbell to summon them. Ask the guard nicely to let you up to the 2nd floor conference room, the elevators require them to use a key card. When you get to the 2nd floor, just follow the "pdxruby" signs. This meeting space is kindly offered to us by Robert Half Technology, a company that provides IT staffing services and positions: http://www.roberthalftechnology.com/</a> |

Portland Java User Group: Lean Mobile Data and Open Source: Storage, Messaging and Analysis
Roll back
| description |
This month's topic: Lean Mobile Data and Open Source: Storage, Messaging and Analysis
This talk will provide a overview of Urban Airship's core data warehouse architecture - a system designed to handle capture, intake and analysis of data for 100s of millions of mobile devices with near real time precision. The talk will touch on Urban Airship's use of HBase, Hadoop Core, ZooKeeper, Kafka as well as home-grown services. Time permitting, the talk will also cover how Urban Airship takes a lean approach to working with volumes of data including the use of ad-hoc tools such as Pig and Cascading as well as how the company leverages the data architecture for fast customer discovery and innovations.
----------
Speaker: Erik Onnen
Erik Onnen is the Hadoop and Analytics Lead at Urban Airship, the Portland-based leader in mobile application engagement services. He has over 10 years in distributed systems experience including the design and implementation of multiple "big data" systems. Erik joined Urban Airship in October of 2010, prior to that he was a Principal Engineer at Jive Software.
----------
PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :)
Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't *have* to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. Go ahead and just show up!
Many people also go for a drink and further discussion following the meeting, at a location determined ad hoc (lately, Trees restaurant in the same building).

Here is a good link to what typically happens in a QS meetup:http://quantifiedself.com/how-to-start-your...
I am excited about meeting other people and learning what otherpeople are tracking or are interested in tracking and why.
I will bring a few gadgets and devices that people can play with:a fitbit, the zeo, the bodymedia armband, the emwave2 heartrate variability gadget.
I can talk about the various apps and services that I use or like: fitbit, zeo, 750words.com, healthmonth.com, quantter.com,gottafeeling app on the iphone, runkeeper, etc...
Also, tentatively, if the time works, Aaron Parecki @aaronpk from Geoloqi.com is going to talk about his self trackingexperiments using Geoloqi.
If we get a lot of people interested, I can look for a differentvenue than Lucky Lab. Any ideas?
