description nil Want to practice your startup pitch in front of people who've done it before? Crave the harsh criticism of your peers? Need the validation of seeing what works and what doesn't in other pitches? Bring your 3 minute pitch. Put your name in a hat and if it gets picked, you're on. Then, answer questions and listen to painfully honest feedback from a panel of so-called experts. The first rule of Pitch Club is you have to be ready to pitch. No teams, no moral support, no looky-loos. More rules as we think of them. FAQ: Q: Who are these so-called experts and what are they going to do to me? A: Your pitch will be evaluated by tech entrepreneurs who have pitched and gotten funded. They are your superiors. Q: What about NDAs? Someone's going to steal my idea! A: There are no NDAs - use your best judgment about what to talk about and what not to. Also, remember the first rule of fight club - don't talk about fight club. We're all on the honor system here. Q: My pitch is more than 3 minutes - can I have more time? A: No. Q: Will it be catered? A: Hell no. You know what's in the lobster bisque. Q: Can anyone critique a pitch? A: No, only the panel.

Here's what Tom Peters, author of In Search of Excellence and The Little BIG Things has to say about Howard's book: "To call Your Business Brickyard a 'bible' would not be an exaggeration. Doesn't belong on your Kindle or bookshelf - belongs in your pocket for permanent and immediate reference." You not only get to meet the author of this book, but attend his workshop, learn about his ideas first-hand and get a free pdf version of the book. Howard Mann, author of "Your Business Brickyard" has collected twelve essentials to any business foundation based on his experiences as an entrepreneur. Mann shows you how to get back to basics, reconnect with your purpose, and grow your business, instead of getting stuck following the latest trend or "Me too" fad. You will learn how to unlock your company's true potential instead of playing catch-up with your competitors. When you're at an entrepreneurial roadblock, this is the book you need to reboot your thinking and get you back on the right road," says Andy Sernovitz, Author, Word of Mouth Marketing: How Smart Companies Get People Talking. There is a fee for this event Online: Members $15 Guests $25 Onsite: Members $20 Guests $30 Register at www.oregon.tie.org.

It uses 'pacman', its home-grown package manager, to provide updates to the latest software applications with full dependency tracking. Operating on a rolling release system, Arch can be installed from a CD image or via an FTP server. The default install provides a solid base that enables users to create a custom installation. In addition, the Arch Build System (ABS) provides a way to easily build new packages, modify the configuration of stock packages, and share these packages with other users via the Arch Linux user repository.

create Calagator::Event 1250461411 CHIFOO: Why It’s Time to Move Beyond the Usability Lab Roll back

description nil Why It’s Time to Move Beyond the Usability Lab Usability labs and similar settings have served us well for 30+ years of research and practical study of human interfaces. But it’s time to move beyond that and leverage the power of the web. In the early days of computers, when users tended to be much more uniform, usability labs and their associated smaller numbers of study participants worked well. The internet, web, and proliferation of mobile devices have changed things. It’s hard to imagine someone who wouldn’t be a candidate user for the applications that many of us design and develop these days. We also know much more about what works and doesn’t work for users. Now, instead of being used to uncover major design issues, usability testing is often used to identify small design improvements that can make a big impact to a company’s bottom line. Thomas will present case studies and discuss the pros and cons of some of the latest trends in usability testing, from “crowd-sourcing” to automated techniques for metric collection. About the Speaker Thomas S. Tullis., Ph.D., is Vice President of Usability & User Insight at Fidelity Investments. He joined Fidelity in 1993 and was instrumental in the development of the company’s usability team and a state-of-the-art Usability Lab. He received his B.A. from Rice University, M.A. in Experimental Psychology from New Mexico State University and Ph.D. in Engineering Psychology from Rice University. With more than 30 years of experience in human-computer interface studies, Thomas has published over 35 papers and holds eight U.S. patents. description nil Hackathons are participatory event. You don't show up to watch or to hang out; you show up to lead or to join a team of other developers to imagine, create, and build something cool and useful in the course of a single day. This may sound impossibly ambitious. It is not. You can get a lot done when you can ignore your inbox and simply focus on the task at hand. The ability to tap in to high-level services certainly helps, as does the fact that everyone shows up expecting to work. create Calagator::Event 1250461401 Portland Perl Mongers -- Shebangml: a markup language with bacon Roll back

description nil speaker: Eric Wilhelm Shebangml is a <a href="http://search.cpan.org/dist/Shebangml/lib/Shebangml/Syntax.pod">markup language</a> which saves programmers from gouging their eyes out on pointy angle brackets. Most pointy ML data (SGML/XML/XHTML/HTML) can be translated to and from this human-readable, bacony syntax. This allows modern programmers to interface with legacy software such as WWW browsers and other relics like "Enterprise Java Software". But the true power of shebangml lies in the '#!' (hash-bang/shebang) and its programmable templating features. Unlike most "don't make me write HTML" generators and markup replacements, hbml preserves the good parts of the quoting constructs and attributes+content nature of XML. This makes it not only a fine replacement for obsolete markup languages, but also an ideal foundation for new dialects and applications. The pluggable syntax and interpreter allow you to define static or dynamically loadable constructs, which allows your application to balance convenience features with security issues using clear separations. This presentation will cover the Shebangml syntax, the basics of the parser/interpreter module, the extensions API, and two real-world applications (the FreeTUIT declarative GUI toolkit and the presentation generator Text::Slidez.) As usual, the meeting will be followed by social hour at the Lucky Lab.
