August Meetup - Creating R Packages

Our August meetup will feature a talk on creating R packages, by Brian Diggs!

Creating a package in R using devtools and roxygen2

One strength of R is its built in support for extending functionality using packages. Packages have specific structure and tools built to enforce some documentation and testing; these lead to a better final product but create a higher hurdle for package creation, especially the first time when the conventions are being learned. This talk will walk through all the steps of creating a package including fulfilling the documentation and testing requirements (and options), resulting in a package that can be distributed and installed by others. A combination of standard tools as well as those provided by the devtools and roxygen2 packages will be used.
|

Summer Social & Lightning Talks
Roll back
| description |

It's been a crazy half year in the web world. Lots of new standards taking hold, lots of new services, tools, and methodologies have popped up. Time to kick back and wrap out collective heads around just what's been going on.

This will be a series of lightning talks - or 5 minute talks about whatever you wish to talk about. It can be anything, such as: a tool you like to use... a design philosophy... a business idea you want to pitch... a story of when you were a boy raised by wolves; whatever you feel like sharing. Just let me know, there are only 12 slots available. Email me if you want to present. Anyone who signs up and presents will get a gift (I'm not sure what yet, but something nice).

This is also a potluck, so please bring something (dessert, chips, drinks... whatever you like to eat). You can still come even if you don't present or bring anything. All are welcome as always!

We've had a couple of these in the past, and many people claim it's their favorite event. It's very low stress and fun gathering... far more open and social than our structured talks.

So, let's grill some hotdogs (and vegi-dogs), crack open some root beer, and trade some stories!
|

Roll back

Personal Telco is a collection of individuals, businesses, and organizations who share -- or plan to share -- internet connectivity rather than hoard it. It's also a group of volunteers who want this network to grow. We believe internet access should be available, fair, and uncensored. Personal Telco Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in PDX.
Whether you're a technology wizard or technically incompetent, volunteering with us is a great way to learn something new, enjoy teaching others, or use your skills to do something useful!

Your Future in the Cloud - Come for the Predictions, Stay for the Drinks
Roll back
| description |
It's no secret that the cloud is growing - and fast. But where is it going in such a hurry? What can we expect (and prepare ourselves for) in the years to come?Â
Â
Join us on Thursday evening (7/19) on the gorgeous Wieden + Kennedy rooftop for drinks, networking and a special discussion on the future of the cloud. The short discussion will be led by cloud evangelists Ben Kepes (@benkepes) and Krishnan Subramanian (@Krishnan), and moderated by TechCrunch's enterprise reporter, Alex Williams (@alexwilliams). From Hobbits to heterogeneous infrastructure, we'll take a look at where the cloud is going and what it will look like when it gets there.
Â
Stick around after the talk, mingle, and catch the breathtaking Portland sunset like you've never seen it before. |
