create Calagator::Event 1250463416 CHIFOO Presents Feb 6 Quantifying Kick-Ass ROI from Social & Mobile User Experiences in the Enterprises Roll back

description nil Thanks to mobile device and social networks, enterprise computing stands at the start of the biggest revolution in computing since the transition to client-server. Tablets and smartphones are not laptops with small screens and no keyboards, yet that is how enterprise IT executives persist in treating them. In fact, to fully grasp the potential of these devices, enterprises will need to re-image every business process and user experience in the enterprise. This will be expensive, but when done correctly, the ROI will indeed kick-ass. This talk will address some of the challenges facing companies in thinking about the social, mobile web and how to approach user experience and business process design to achieve kick-ass ROI. About the Speaker Since 2002, Paul Brody (@pbrody) has served as a Partner with IBM Global Business Services and Global Lead, Electronics Industry Strategy Practice, and has led engagements with leading electronics companies in the US, Europe, and Asia Pacific. Brody has worked extensively with business strategy, supply chain management and product life cycle management, including planning and scheduling, logistics, and procurement solutions.
Prior to IBM, he held senior supply chain executive positions at ClearCross and i2 Technologies. He has also been a consultant with McKinsey & Co., primarily in the high-tech electronics sector in the United States and across the Asia Pacific region. Brody began his career at Mobile Telecommunications Services Ltd., where he developed marketing programs for one of Africa’s first mobile cellular systems, turning the company into a national brand name. He holds a B.A. in Economics, and a Certificate in African Studies, from Princeton University.

create Calagator::Event 1250463414 What Happens When Execs Become Agile Champions Roll back

description nil Mark Lawler on Why He Loves and Hates Agile One of our local madmen is coming to talk to AgilePDX at Puppet Labs on February 20 at 6:30p. Having clawed his way up from the ranks of programmer, Mark Lawler now sits on top of 40 agile teams at Cambia Health Solutions (formerly Regence Blue Cross/Blue Shield). Barreling his way through yet another enterprise agile transition the last couple of years, Lawler occasionally shouts out the world what he loves and hates about agile to any of us who are willing to listen. Carrying around the title of Chief Technical Officer for one of the largest employers in the Portland metro area doesn’t slow him down one bit. Come prepared to listen to an agile executive talk about why agile is the best way to drive an organization to thrive. As Lawler says on his blog, “I love Agile; I also hate Agile. I love how it can free teams to truly delight customers while delivering high quality products on time. I hate how Agile zealots can use the Tower of Agile Babble to confuse the heck out of teams trying Agile on for size. My goal is to help new teams actually embrace and become Agile without having to learn all of the pomp and circumstance in one big fat swallow.” Mark Lawler is the VP and Chief Technology Officer of Cambia Health Solutions, responsible for transformative IT strategies, technologies and efforts for its portfolio companies. With over 30 Agile teams the group delivers and supports solutions across the business spectrum, including award winning products that are sold and hosted in a SaaS model to other leading health insurance payers. A Portland, Oregon based technology executive with over 20 years of experience of delivering software products, Mark believes strongly in the mantra of delivering high quality products on time while delighting customers. You can find Mark sharing his opinions on technology, software development and quality, as well as Agile methodologies as @mark_lawler on Twitter and through his blog at: http://markslawler.wordpress.com/ About Cambia Health Solutions Cambia Health Solutions is a nonprofit total health solutions company based in the Pacific Northwest/Intermountain region, serving consumers and communities for nearly 100 years. Cambia companies provide a wide range of products and services, including health care information technology and software development, retail health care, health insurance, life insurance, pharmacy benefit management, consumer engagement and wellness.

create Calagator::Event 1250463413 Hadoop and Data Science Meetup Roll back

description nil Soren Macbeth is the chief data scientist at Yieldbot, co-founder of StockTwits. His talk will describe, "the various problems and solutions that we've run into at Yieldbot running Hadoop on AWS in the various configuration that we've used over the years. I'll be focusing on a lot of the weird edge cases that are specific to running in AWS." Should be a fun talk, more technical and Hadoopy than we've had in a while. Nittier, grittier.

These are the local industry that can use some help to identify solutions to reduce carbon footprint and lessen any negative environmental impact to local residents. Our goal is to brainstorm innovative ideas utilizing information technology by leveraging the mobile and social web. Of course, creative juice often comes after a glass of nice brew. That's how drink is involved in this. If you not a drinker, the Pub serves good food of you to hack & eat. We are not really building an app at the meeting (but if you would like to crank out an app in 90 mins, that would be awesome too). And what are we doing with these ideas? You'll have to come to find out. For those who won't be able to make it in person you can join via G+ Hangout. Please let me know in advance. Thanks and hope to see you on the 15th!

description nil Bio: Michael G Schwern is the author of Test::More (the Perl testing system) and Gitpan, 21,000 repositories on Github representing every release of every Perl module on CPAN. Schwern does not push to master, master pushes to Schwern. Synopsis: Tinker Toys are the best illustration of a Git repository I’ve found. Side-by-side with issuing Git commands, we’ll build a Git repository out of kid’s toys to show what’s going on behind the scenes. Mind bending concepts like remote branches, rebase and the staging area become child’s play. Basic knowledge of git commands is expected of the audience (init, add, commit, diff, log, push, pull). If you’ve started using git, but are uncomfortable with it and don’t really get it, this is for you. WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD – Small Parts. Not For Children Under 4 Years.

description nil Estimating stories, sprint commitments, and releases--estimating in general--remains a real bugaboo for all teams. Agile teams have different approaches to estimating. What's worked best for your team? Has your team come to consider estimating "waste?" How do you make that work in your environment? What's your rationale and how does it test out in practice? Come share your techniques, tactics, strategies, and war stories with colleagues over lunch. Same bat time, same bat station. See you there. And, hey, we're about to bust our seams again. If you ping [email protected] or the AgilePDX list that you're coming, it can help us help the restaurant to provide fast service and the best possible layout for the tables. RSVP's appreciated NOT required.

description nil In the first hour, Pete Forsyth will give a presentation and Q&A about Wikipedia: what is it, how did it come to be, how does it work? And, what's with Oregon's special kinship with Wikipedia and all things wiki? After the first hour will be an open "edit-a-thon" - you can pair up with experienced Wikipedians to improve any Wikipedia article you like. Some suggestions: Portland's food scene, stuff that "keeps Portland weird", Portland area businesses and startups. Or even zombies. If you have reference materials, bring them along! Event sponsors: Wiki Strategies and Prichard Communications. Do bring a laptop, if you possibly can! If you don't have one, that's OK -- we may have a few loaners on hand, or you can just work with somebody else who has one. See here for more details -- and feel free to edit this page with your ideas: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Portland/February_2013 (You can sign up either on Meetup.com or on this Wikipedia page).
