create Calagator::Event 1250464655 Nerd Nite #6 -- Junk in The Trunk: Recent Controversies in Genomics Roll back

description nil Nerd Nite is a monthly event that strives for an inebriated, salacious, yet deeply academic vibe. We aim to entertain, educate, elucidate, enlighten, and other things that start with "e." Come drink along with us! <b>Cost</b>: $8.00 suggested cover at the door, or tickets available <a href="http://www.etix.com/ticket/online/performanceSearch.jsp?performance_id=1745598&cobrand=mcmenamins">online</a> This Nerd Nite will feature: <b>Junk in The Trunk: Recent Controversies in Genomics</b> You may have heard-- less than 2% of the human genome is comprised of protein-coding DNA. What is the 98% composed of, where does it come from, and what does it do? Sarah Schaack will take you on a guided tour through the genomic landscape of some fully sequenced plants and animals, including humans. Her talk will explore the recent heated debate among biologists surrounding "junk DNA", its utility (or lack thereof), and why bigger isn't necessarily better, at least when it comes to genome size. <b><a href="http://www.reed.edu/biology/professors/schaack.html">Sarah Schaack, PhD,</a></b> is an assistant professor of biology doing research in the area of evolutionary genomics at Reed College.

create Calagator::Event 1250464654 PLUG Linux Clinic Roll back

description nil The Linux Clinic meets once a month on the third Sunday from 1 - 5 pm at Free Geek, 1731 SE 10th Avenue, Portland, 97214. Bring you Linux computer that is being a brat and we'll teach it some manners. Or bring your computer that has some evil operating system on it and we'll send it home with a shiny, clean Linux distro. Or just come and look over shoulders to see what Linux is all about. If you already know Linux well, the Clinic is also a good place to learn how to help users troubleshoot problems. It's excellent training for tech support work in Linux. We have monitors, mice, keyboards, and miscellanous other perifpherals, so generally all you need to bring is the box. There is also coffee and people usually bring munchies as well. After all, you can't computer on an empty tummy.

update Calagator::Event 1250464510 ChickTech Problem-Storming for Nonprofits Roll back

description Let's use our skills to make our community a better place for women and girls! Are you a woman interested in brainstorming and creating solutions for a nonprofit? We're bringing in nonprofits who are focused on women and girls (or issues that women and girls struggle with) who have something that they've been struggling with...and our goal is to have a viable solution for each of them by the end of the weekend! Although each project will have a tech component, women with expertise in many different areas wil be vital to creating a solid and successful solution. Each team will consist of 7-10 women with a variety of backgrounds. Some of the areas the teams will need expertise in include technology, nonprofits, marketing, business, psychology, education, and design. We'll kick off with heavy hors d'oeuvres Friday evening and everyone will choose their projects and meet their team members. Saturday and Sunday, it's all up to the teams to create something amazing! At 4pm Sunday, we'll hear from each team about their solution, and we'll adjourn at 5:30. Also, we'd love to hear ideas on how to help teams continue working on their projects for the nonprofits! A light breakfast, lunch and snacks are provided Saturday and Sunday. Childcare will be provided on-site. And we would *love* to have some supportive techie guys help out with the childcare in order to break yet another stereotype! We're hoping to have some fun, hands-on activities for the kids too, depending on ages (and age ranges). Please let us know if you have a nonprofit you think would like to be involved and get some free problem-solving, or if you'd like to be a volunteer and help to organize this event. All people who identify as women are welcome, although we have set a lower limit on age to 15. However, we are open to persuasion...if you are a young woman under 15, feel free to contact us. Sliding scale fee. All fees collected are donations that go to paying for the costs associated with this event. Anything above cost keeps ChickTech K-12 programs free for their participants. ChickTech's fiscal sponsor is TechStart, a registered 501c3. Event Schedule Friday: 6:30p - 9p hors d'oeuvres, choose projects, meet teams! Saturday: 9:30a - 5:30p breakfast, work with teams, lunch, more work! Sunday: 9:30a - 5:30p breakfast, work, lunch, work, present (not the noun, the verb)! Questions? Email us at [email protected]! **NEW DATES AND MORE DETAILS ON NONPROFITS TO COME!** Let's use our skills to make our community a better place for women and girls! update Calagator::Event 1250464647 August Meeting | C# on Mobile: Using Xamarin to Create Cross-Platform Mobile Apps Roll back

description Bryan Costanich, Xamarin’s Director of Education, will be speaking about mobile development and the state of the mobile industry. To start off the evening, Kelly White will be giving a brief demonstration of the new Nokia Imaging SDK for Windows Phone. In Bryan's session we’re going to examine how to create cross-platform mobile applications using C# for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone. We’ll look at the architecture necessary to support code sharing and reuse, as well as best practices for minimizing fragmentation across the various platforms. We’ll also examine how to handle platform divergence and take advantage of varying device capabilities. To illustrate these points, we’ll look at real world example applications and the architecture and patterns that power them. - WHERE: Intel Hawthorne Farms 3 (HF3) 5200 NE Elam Young Pkwy Hillsboro, OR 97124 Map: http://binged.it/IntelHF3Map - WHEN: Tuesday 08/06/2013 6:00 p.m. Pizza 6:30 p.m. Presentation ~8:30 p.m. After Words at **Morgy's Pub** ---------------------------------------- SPONSORS: Big thanks to our Premium Sponsors that help make our meetings possible: azad Technology Partners | Technology Consulting - Engineering - Project Management | Committed to Your Success Cinetopia | Why watch a movie in coach when you can see it in first class? create Calagator::Event 1250464642 AgilePDX Downtown Pub Lunch: Consider the State of Agile in Portland Roll back

description nil Quite a bit is happening with agile in Portland as the pub lunchers know. But where are we going with all this agile experimentation, this retrospecting and iterating? Are we making progress, stuck in a rut, evolving new forms of agility? On 8/21 the evening Agile PDX gathering will be all about the future of Agile PDX and what we hope for the future of agile in Portland. This month the pub lunchers will be talking about whether we’re getting what we hoped for out of agile principles and practices, whether we’re getting what we need from Agile PDX, and what we hope for the future. Whether you plan to be at Puppet Labs on 8/21 or not, come this Friday and have your say. We’ll also open by polling the group for special issues anyone needs help with or connections anyone is trying to make.

description nil COPIOUS is a user-centered digital experience agency. We build digital products with the user at heart and technology in our bones. We recently moved to a new office and now have a large space to host our TechTalks. **About TechTalks:** COPIOUSLabs TechTalks series meets every other Friday at 1pm at the COPIOUS offices. Our talks span artificial intelligence, new programming languages and techniques, computational linguistics, geographic data processing, systems and software architecture, augmented reality, network security, and more as proposed to the Copious engineering team. **About this talk:** Speaker: [Aaron Edmonds, Software Engineer](http://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=91457881&locale=en_US&trk=tyah) Not many pieces of software can claim a 7 point manifesto, let alone deliver on all points, but the Remote Dictionary Service (Redis) stands as an outstanding example of code written with conviction. With just over 4 years since its initial release, many of the biggest sites online are leveraging Redis because of it's speed and simplicity. In this tech talk, we'll walk through the basic commands and various data types of Redis and also see how companies like Instagram, Craigslist, and Github are using it in their core architecture. Bring your unix based laptop to follow along.
