He’s worn many hats and titles; his current is Harbinger of Doom (no really, it is on his business card). <strong>Demo time!</strong> After the talk/Q&A, we will reserve time for folks to demo their favorite security/privacy tech tool. update Calagator::Event 1250464613 PDXScala Monthly Meeting Roll back

description Come join other Scala fans, whether you're a seasoned oldtimer or complete beginner. We'll have open discussions and a variety of presentations and examples. If you have topics you're interested in hearing more about or something you'd like to give a presentation on, please let us know! Also, feel free to bring code you'd like to show off or get input on from the rest of the group! As we've been doing for some months now, the first hour of tonight's meeting will be oriented towards people who are new to Scala. If you have questions you'd like to ask about general usage, specific libraries, or overall understanding of the ecosystem, we'll be here to help you find your way. For everyone else, we'll have plenty of extra time tonight for any other discussions and topics, so if you have something you'd like to talk about or code you'd like to show, come prepared! We'll have pizza here at 6, so come early if you're hungry. Come join other Scala fans, whether you're a seasoned old-timer or complete beginner. If you have topics you're interested in hearing more about or something you'd like to give a presentation on, please let us know! Also, feel free to bring code you'd like to show off or get input on from the rest of the group! This month, we're actually planning something a little bit different form even our new format. I (Thomas Lockney) will be giving a quick introduction to Scalatron (http://scalatron.github.io/), which is a fun way to learn and hone Scala skills in a group environment. The idea is that you build Scala-based "bots" that compete against each other in a common environment. Depending on how the group feels, we can potentially just spend the evening focused on this. But we'll also have time, if people are interested, to explore other topics, as well. We'll have pizza here at 6, so come early if you're hungry. We look forward to see you all there!

update Calagator::Event 1250464612 pdxfunc: Portland Functional Programming Study Group Roll back

description <i>ABOUT THE GROUP: Join programmers, researchers and enthusiasts to discuss functional programming. pdxfunc is a study/user group exploring the world of functional programming based in Portland, Oregon. The group welcomes programmers interested in all functional languages, including Haskell, OCaml, Erlang, Scala and others, as well as using functional techniques in non-functional languages. The group meets regularly and provides presentations, demos and discussions applicable to all skill levels, from newbies and experts. The meetings are usually on the second Monday of the month. </i> This month we're happy to have Carl Howells presenting "A Tale of Two Libraries, or How Recent GHC Features Make Type Hackery Easier Than API Design", stemming from his recent work on a haskell library using many of the new type system features added in GHC 7.4 and 7.6. Topics will include type-level naturals and their reification via singleton types, lifted data types, kind polymorphism, and fiddly GHC details that make all these things slightly less awesome than they should be. Also included will be an object lesson in the dangers of naming and releasing too early. Also, we'll have Lyle Kopnicky talking on "Just-in-Time Compilation in Haskell". See you there! <i>ABOUT THE GROUP: Join programmers, researchers and enthusiasts to discuss functional programming. pdxfunc is a study/user group exploring the world of functional programming based in Portland, Oregon. create Calagator::Event 1250464700 Quality Enablement through Agile Testing Roll back

description nil Producing high quality software, closely aligned with the constantly changing requirements of business stakeholders is more important than ever. Especially in an Agile development setting, every team member has to ensure that their work is of the highest quality – all the time. Testers can verify quality but not ensure it – proper QA procedures and a quality mindset are essential for high performance development teams. During this event, your local Microsoft Developer Technology Specialist will provide you an inside look at Black Box Testing, show you the capabilities of Microsoft Test Manager, and address the Developer’s experience in quality enablement through white box testing. Furthermore, we’ll cover how quality is an accountability and addressable by the entire development organization. You’ll also have an opportunity to learn the value of Build, Deploy, Test, and Lab Management from our ALM Partner, Crosslake Technologies, and gain exposure to enterprise cloud based cross platform application testing with Perfecto Mobile. We look forwarding to seeing you there!

update Calagator::Event 1250464045 PDX Web & Design: Alternatives to Conveying Interactive Design Concepts Roll back

description <p>Many of the processes and deliverables widely used in web design today have been inherited from print, or born in the early days of web design. Deliverables like static wireframes or rounds of Photoshop comps provide a muted glimpse of the experiences they are trying to represent, which often result in mismanaged expectations and wasted resources. Erin Kurtz, Substance's Experience Director, will present some of the ways we are redefining our methods and deliverables by capitalizing on the broadening skill sets of our UX, Design and Development teams to work smarter and more efficiently in our User Experience and Visual Design phases.</p> <p>I'm pretty excited for this talk, as the design web field could use a bit of disruption. Thanks to Erin and Substance for presenting this talk, thanks to Webtrends for the space, and thanks to Vitamin T for catering dinner!</p> <p>Many of the processes and deliverables widely used in web design today have been inherited from print, or born in the early days of web design. update Calagator::Event 1250464510 **RESCHEDULED** ChickTech Problem-Storming for Nonprofits Roll back

description **NEW DATES AND MORE DETAILS ON NONPROFITS TO COME!** Let's use our skills to make our community a better place for women and girls! Are you a woman interested in brainstorming and creating solutions for a nonprofit? We're bringing in nonprofits who are focused on women and girls (or issues that women and girls struggle with) who have something that they've been struggling with...and our goal is to have a viable solution for each of them by the end of the weekend! Although each project will have a tech component, women with expertise in many different areas wil be vital to creating a solid and successful solution. Each team will consist of 7-10 women with a variety of backgrounds. Some of the areas the teams will need expertise in include technology, nonprofits, marketing, business, psychology, education, and design. We'll kick off with heavy hors d'oeuvres Friday evening and everyone will choose their projects and meet their team members. Saturday and Sunday, it's all up to the teams to create something amazing! At 4pm Sunday, we'll hear from each team about their solution, and we'll adjourn at 5:30. Also, we'd love to hear ideas on how to help teams continue working on their projects for the nonprofits! A light breakfast, lunch and snacks are provided Saturday and Sunday. Childcare will be provided on-site. And we would *love* to have some supportive techie guys help out with the childcare in order to break yet another stereotype! We're hoping to have some fun, hands-on activities for the kids too, depending on ages (and age ranges). Please let us know if you have a nonprofit you think would like to be involved and get some free problem-solving, or if you'd like to be a volunteer and help to organize this event. All people who identify as women are welcome, although we have set a lower limit on age to 15. However, we are open to persuasion...if you are a young woman under 15, feel free to contact us. Sliding scale fee. All fees collected are donations that go to paying for the costs associated with this event. Anything above cost keeps ChickTech K-12 programs free for their participants. ChickTech's fiscal sponsor is TechStart, a registered 501c3. Event Schedule Friday: 6:30p - 9p hors d'oeuvres, choose projects, meet teams! Saturday: 9:30a - 5:30p breakfast, work with teams, lunch, more work! Sunday: 9:30a - 5:30p breakfast, work, lunch, work, present (not the noun, the verb)! Questions? Email us at [email protected]! create Calagator::Event 1250464696 CHIFOO Presents: Using Value to Position Design, UX, and HCI More Strategically In an Organization Roll back

description nil Demonstrating the value of design in business is key to positioning design, UX and HCI more strategically in an organization. Yet demonstrating this has been a vexing challenge for designers. Using metrics that matter to leaders as the kernel in a story is key to meeting business leaders halfway in their quest to understand what design, UX and HCI can do for them. Furthermore, contrary to popular belief, there is not a clear-cut set of metrics, a “clip of silver bullets”, that works for all situations. What to measure then, is highly situational. Design Thinking is perfect for developing solutions to highly situational challenges. This presentation will cover the presenter’s examples and experiences in successfully applying Design Thinking to demonstrate the value of design, UX and HCI to business in: •Determining what to measure for a situation •Measuring what matters to key stakeholders •Designing a viable, sustained measurement system •Communicating the results with impact to key stakeholders About the Speaker Steve Sato is the founder of Sato+Partners, a management consulting and organization development firm by and for design leaders. Steve works with executives, directors and their teams to build experience, design and innovation capability through using existing work to bootstrap. Previously, Steve was at Hewlett-Packard and led its customer-centered strategy and planning consultancy, then later in Corporate Design, led building experience design capability across the company. Steve was formerly at Doblin Group as a design planner and also at Accenture, pioneering customer-centered design for the company in their advanced R&D group. He has a Masters in Design from the Institute of Design at IIT, Masters of Engineering Management from Northwestern University and a Bachelor’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois. His clients include Microsoft, Yahoo!, Coca-Cola, Industrial Design Society of America, The Hershey Company and HP. See www.satopartners.com for further details.
