Grand Opening for Flux: A feminist hackerspace in PDX
Roll back
| description |
What's a feminist hackerspace? Why does Portland need one? Where can I go to work on my projects? Can I solder and paint and build stuff at Flux? Come to the grand opening of Flux and find out the answers to all of these questions! Maybe you'll meet a cute person and solve a major world problem together via craft and science!
Don't identify as a hacker? No worries, Flux is a place to get stuff done from collaging to soldering. We've got room for you!
Flux â a new hackerspace in Portland â is the work of a small group of artists and hackers. We found ourselves frustrated with the difficulty of finding welcoming, affordable space for hardware workshops in Portland, OR. Itâs easy to talk software at a bar-- but you canât very well solder arduino boards over brewskies! Also, as members of âtraditionally underrepresented populations,â we found that existing meetups and maker spaces just didnât represent us or cater to our needs. Where are the women, the people of color, the queer folk, the blue collar workers? Where are our trusted allies?
The technology world is often a binder full of testosterone. Weâre tired of the exclusivity that pervades tech culture in this town-- so weâre taking action! Flux aims to create a new culture of artists, makers, benders and breakers in Portland, OR.
Our workshop is filled with people and tools to help members navigate the technical and emotional hurdles of finishing their dream projects. As an all-volunteer group, FLUX prides itself on maintaining an explicitly feminist space. We strive to make technology inclusive for people of all backgrounds and technical abilities. To that end, we welcome makers of all genders, orientations, and ethnic and cultural heritages.

Mathmusician Robby Kraft and artist and synesthete NÃm Wunnan team up to explore the concepts and relationships behind this analogy. Kraft will abstract musical shapes from representative works and illustrate the way these shapes evolved and changed as they were assimilated by the next generation. Wunnan will describe (and paint) the same structures through the lense of his grapheme > color and visual > audio synesthesia. Together the two interpretations of the musical structures will support a dialogue about the nature of tranlsation and what matters in music and art. |

Flux Grand Opening
Roll back

Our first public opening will be September 27th at 6pm featuring an unconference style series of 10 minute talks covering why a feminist hackerspace is necessary in Portland and related topics.
Fall Puppet Triage-a-Thon
Roll back

Interested in contributing to Puppet? Want to come hang out with fun people and do geeky things all day? Come to our Triage-A-Thon on Wednesday, October 2nd! You can participate virtually from anywhere in the world, or join us in person in our office in Portland, OR.
Our goal is to review all the open tickets in the Puppet and Module projects to:
- Update and confirm that issues are still relevant
- Ensure tickets are in the right status and all the right information is present to fix the problem
- Close any invalid or no longer relevant tickets
Weâll assign blocks of tickets to every participant, explain what you need to do, and provide people on the ground to answer questions and help you make decisions. If you want a few more details about how you can help, you should read about the process we use to triage bugs.
Participate online worldwide: Virtually weâll provide an IRC channel (#puppethack), IM, and rewards for people who triage tickets and get involved. The Triage-a-Thon will be happening online from 1am-5pm PDT so that our friends and employees outside the US can also participate, so drop in any time that works for you.
In Portland: Join us in person at our office in the Pearl! We'll provide breakfast, coffee, a delicious lunch, snacks and space in our office. Please bring a laptop computer with you. The in-office portion of the Triage-a-Thon starts at 9am, and runs all day, so you're welcome to drop in at any point.

CHIFOO Presents: Finding the Awesome in Education feat. Karen Mahon
Roll back

There are hundreds of thousands of apps available in the app store and the numbers are ever increasing. A reasonable percentage of these apps focus on education. But there are few apps that quantify their effectiveness or value for the students who use them or the teachers and parents who purchase them.
How can behavioral science, instructional design, gaming and UX/UI design assist in this effort, not only to build products that are effective and fun, but to define these metrics and educate consumers about how to identify them? What makes an app AWESOME and how can we quantify that? Not only in terms of fun, but in terms of teaching kids meaningful stuff! This talk will explore these questions, using example apps to illustrate the relevant features.
This event is sponsored by Clarity Innovations, which is paying for non-members to attend for free. Seating is limited, so you should register in advance to be sure you have a seat!

OEN Angel Oregon Fall Application Deadline
Roll back
| description |

→ |
OEN’s Angel Oregon has been a key element in the funding and development of seed stage companies in Oregon since 2005 when the first investment award was presented. However, the program was only offered once a year. Due to an increasing demand on the part of entrepreneurs for access to capital, education, mentors, and other resources, OEN has responded by making Angel Oregon a year round program, starting with the new OEN Angel Oregon Fall Program. - See more at: http://www.oen.org/events/angel-oregon/?loggedin=true#sthash.IH5zFm3W.dpuf |

#Brunch 31
** *September 29, Noon - 2pm* **
This month through the end of 2013, Brunch has its own apartment, smack in the middle of downtown Portland.
Please Note: Brunch has slimmed down. Talks start at 12:30, and everything finishes by 2pm.
We are doing something a bit different this month. A member of the RC Board has been working with the Lewis and Clark College Venture competition and suggested we have some of the student businesses do a "dress rehearsal" of the final pitch they will present to a panel of judges where they could receive up to $30,000 in funding for their venture.
In keeping with the spirit of the competition, we're going to give you very little info about these businesses. The students will be looking for feedback on their presentation and how well they pitch their venture. Exciting!
**Bring some or all of these things for the optimum Brunch Experience**
* A healthy sense of curiosity
* Food to share
* Friends! Lots of friends!
* Your own plates and utensils
