update Calagator::Event 1250464753 Read the Docs Hackathon Roll back

description We will gather and hack on Read the Docs all day. If you've never contributed before, this is a good chance since both of the main maintainers (one of which is the original author) will be there. Read the Docs is written in Python but we could also use front end help in the form of design input and css/javascript. There will (likely) be pizza and beer provided by Mozilla to fuel folks. create Calagator::Event 1250464933 ACM Tech Talk: Connecting Android to MySQL: An Interactive Tutorial Roll back

description nil In this talk, we will cover the basics of how to connect an Android device to a MySQL database. The technique used is adaptable to any database server (SQL Server, PostGRES, etc...) As you probably know, Android does not have a built in functionality to access remote databases, instead it uses SQLLite, a flat file system. However, using Java EE 7 and a simple PHP connectivity script, it is practically trivial to do the basic CRUD operations on a remotely hosted database. Bring a laptop with Java 7 and Android SDK with Eclipse installed, and get ready to code. Or just bring yourself, and a sheet will be passed to have the connection code EMAILED to you after the venue. About the speaker: Sean Walsh (aka Azadi) is the current vice chair of the Portland State Chapter of the ACM. Sean is currently finishing his Bachelor's of Computer Science with a Mathematics Minor at Portland State University, and has industry experience with deploying mobile apps for Android.

create Calagator::Event 1250464931 Mobile Portland: When Responsive Web Design Meets the Real World Roll back

description nil Why are so many responsive web designs crap? Over 90% of responsive web sites are bloated. These sites may look good on mobile devices, but few people will ever see them because they take to long to load. While the core tenets of responsive web design are easy to understand, doing it well is much more difficult. Slapping a few media queries on your existing site isn't enough. The solution is mobile first responsive web design. Mobile first and responsive web design aren't simply two great tastes that go great together. No they represent much more than that. Mobile first responsive web design is the responsible way to build responsive design. It is the best way to build something that is both responsive from a layout AND a performance perspective. Image of Boston Globe Responsive Design But if mobile first is the right way to do responsive design, then why are so few people doing it? In this session, we'll dig into why mobile first responsive design matters and the five techniques necessary to make it work. If your company is exploring responsive design of even if you're already building responsive designs, you won't want to miss this talk. About Jason Grigsby Jason GrigsbyJason and his Cloud Four co-founder Lyza Gardner wrote Head First Mobile Web which teaches web developers how to take their web skills and transfer them to mobile. He was a signatory to the Future Friendly manifesto which addresses sensible approaches to device diversity. Jason travel frequently giving talks and workshops helping individuals and organizations figure out how to best apply web technology to their multi-device efforts. Jason is also the founder of Mobile Portland. He normally avoids speaking at Mobile Portland meetings for this reason, but we've twisted his arm this month.

description nil Come join your fellow geo nerds for some map hacking, geographic learning, beer drinking, and conversation having! update Calagator::Event 1250463837 Portland JavaScript Admirers' Monthly Meeting Roll back

description The monthly meeting of Portland's first JavaScript and ECMAscript users' group. We host presentations and discussions on everything JavaScript-related - including JavaScript frameworks, node.js, CoffeeScript, and whatever else comes up. This will be a lightning talk meeting! I encourage everyone to give a short presentation - five minutes or less - especially if you have not presented at pdxjs before. The talk can be on anything you want. Pick a topic and make some slides, if you want to use slides. A five minute talk works well with ten or fewer slides, which gives you 30 seconds per slide. Add your name and a link to your slides (if any) to the <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AsEHtxZZUtqidExwNnN4U3FCb0QzN3FLbkJEQWcySmc&usp=sharing">signup sheet</a>. An addition, Kyle Drake will be presenting on <a href="http://coinpunk.org">Coinpunk</a>, the future of browser cryptography, why he thinks server-side encryption and password hashing is going away, and how to use HTML5/JS/Node to develop secure applications for Bitcoin, a technology Rickard Falkvinge called "the Napster of banking". Feel free to join our mailing list at http://groups.google.com/group/pdxjs if you too are a JavaScript admirer. update Calagator::Event 1250464800 Gimme Shelter! Roll back

description When: Competition begins 6pm Friday, September 20th, and ends at 6pm, Sunday, September 22nd, followed by an awards ceremony and after party. Challenge: Design, source, and build the most comfortable, good looking, easy to build, and sustainable micro-home you possibly can in a single weekend, spending no more than the equivalent of a single month's rent. Guidelines: -For fairness, we recommend teams of no less than 3 and no more than 7 team members. You may have unlimited active supporters, and are encouraged to get as many people following and supporting your as team as possible, as this will help you instantly source materials, tools, and skills, and problem-solve in realtime. -Teams may build onsite or off. They must have their completed houses at Green Anchors by the time the competion ends at 6pm, Sunday, September 22nd. -The goal is to create an open-source micro home design that can be build for the equivalent of one month's rent. Therefore, meets can spend $0 using found materials, but teams cannot spend more than $500 on materials. You should keep a record of everything you buy, and everything you get for free. -Every team must have someone filling the roles of photographer and blogger and social media expert. This can be the same person, or many people. The purpose of this rule is so the people supporting the teams can be kept up to date as the project progresses in realtime, with blog posts, Facebook posts, and tweets. This also helps to create a very well-documented record of how you built your house- so that other people can do the same. It's much easier to document a project while it's happening than to try to explain how you did it later. -You may assemble materials and brainstorm designs before the event, but please don't start building! It won't be very much fun to watch if you already have a house built! Scoring Criteria: Cost -Actual cost to build -Cost to replicate with new materials -Embodied energy cost/ sustainability of materials Replicabilty -Detail of documentation -Ease of building -Availability of materials Style -Flow -Comfort -Looks Functionality -How does it fair in the waterproof test (this should be fun…) -How many human needs, besides shelter, does it meet? -Does it have a kitchen? -Electricity? -Toilet? -Shower? Prizes: Teams should compete for the fun of it. However, we will reach out to local businesses, particularly restaurants, bars, and coffee shops, for free perks like rounds of beers, coffee, and free meals. This is also an opportunity for crowdsourcing, and anyone is free to throw a non-monetary gift or perk into the prize pot. Awards: In addition to the grand prize, which will go to the team with the highest cumulative score, there will also be awards in each sub category with their own prizes, and a bunch of silly, made up awards to keep it fun. Award Ceremony and After-Party At 6pm on Sunday, there will be an after party. Entry to this event will be sliding scale, from $5 to $1,000,000, with 100% of the proceeds going build more tiny houses, following the winning design. When: Competition begins 6pm Friday, September 20th, and ends at 6pm, Sunday, September 22nd, followed by an awards ceremony and after party. NOTE: Meet at [Fernhill Community Center](https://www.facebook.com/fernhillcreations) at 7pm September 20 for a planning meeting. update Calagator::Event 1250464915 Your Path Through Agile Fluency: Making Agile Work for You Roll back

description Your Path Through Agile Fluency: Making Agile Work for You<br>Presented by Diana Larsen and James Shore Networking with complimentary hors d'oeuvres at 5:30pm<br> Presentation at 6:30pm Abstract: The promise of Agile is simple and compelling: a team that effortlessly surfs the wave of business possibility, changing direction to meet the needs of a changing market. Transitioning to Agile confers many benefits to an organization, but all too often teams don’t (or can’t) deliver on the promise. Too few teams achieve the ideal. Diana Larsen and Jim Shore developed a model of the ways agile teams deliver value. This model describes four conditions of Agile fluency, what you can expect from each condition, and how to increase your team’s fluency, so you can achieve what Agile promises. Diana and Jim will demonstrate how the organization’s desire for benefits and willingness to invest make the real difference. From creating value, to delivering, optimizing, and beyond, you will learn the practices, techniques, and change necessary as teams stretch their understanding of Agile and achieve new levels of excellence. This talk is based on the ideas behind the article at www.agilefluency.com. Bio: Diana Larsen is a founding partner of FutureWorks Consulting. She is considered an international authority in the areas of Agile software development, team leadership, and Agile transitions. Diana works with organizations in the western US and around the world. Deeply in tune with how work teams grow, adapt, and develop, she co-authored Agile Retrospectives: Making Good Teams Great, Liftoff: Launching Agile Teams and Projects, and most recently, with James Shore, “Your Path through Agile Fluency: A Brief Guide to Success with Agile” at www.agilefluency.com. An active volunteer, Diana is a current board member for Agile Open Northwest and the Organization Design Forum, coordinating committee member for AgilePDX, and past board member of Agile Alliance and PNSQC. She is also an associate of the Human Systems Dynamics Institute. You can follow her on Twitter (@DianaOfPortland) or contact her directly at [email protected]. James Shore teaches, writes, and consults on Agile development processes. He led his first Agile team in 1999 and was an early adopter of Extreme Programming in 2000. Today, he focuses on helping people understand how all aspects of Agile, from technical, to business, to social, fit together to create successful software projects. James is an inaugural recipient of the Agile Alliance’s Gordon Pask Award for Contributions to Agile Practice and is co-author of The Art of Agile Development (O’Reilly, 2007). In 2012, InfoQ named him as one of the “most influential people in Agile.” He writes about software development on his “Art of Agile” blog at http://jamesshore.com and he hosts the screencast series “Let’s Code: Test-Driven JavaScript” at http://www.letscodejavascript.com. A Special Treat from PNSQC Plan on coming early! In collaboration with the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference (PNSQC) the SPIN meeting will complimentary hors d’oeuvres and beverages beginning at 5:30 pm. This is a great opportunity for networking and knowledge exchange with other practitioners on the current state of software development. PNSQC is the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference, a group of volunteers interested in Software Quality. The Mission of the PNSQC is to enable knowledge exchange to produce higher quality software. As a non-profit, it seeks to promote software quality by providing education and opportunities for information exchange within the software community. How to Register This is a FREE lecture sponsored by the Rose City SPIN. But you can help us plan by registering at: https://2013octspin-reg.eventbrite.com Rose City SPIN The Rose City Software Process Improvement Network (SPIN) is a monthly forum for networking, mutual support, and promotion of effective software practices. update Calagator::Event 1250464915 Your Path Through Agile Fluency: Making Agile Work for You Roll back

description Your Path Through Agile Fluency: Making Agile Work for You Presented by Diana Larsen and James Shore Networking with complimentary hors d'oeuvres at 5:30pm Presentation at 6:30pm Abstract: The promise of Agile is simple and compelling: a team that effortlessly surfs the wave of business possibility, changing direction to meet the needs of a changing market.
