November PMI Agile Round Table
Roll back
| description |

→ |
The PMI Agile Roundtable provides a forum for exchanging ideas, techniques and real world experiences (good and bad) in managing agile projects. Although sponsored by PMI, all roles and backgrounds are welcome and encouraged to participate / debate. We value the variety of perspectives and levels of experience with agile.
This Month we're honored to have Jean Richardson present: Servant Leadership: A Grounding Discussion
Summary:
For agilists, servant leadership has long been the go-to leadership model. Most agilists aren’t grounded in what servant leadership really is.
This discussion will introduce you to the founder, his initial conceptual overview of servant leadership, modern thought leaders, and common critiques of the model. You will leave with an easy way to determine whether you really are a successful servant leader.
_______________________________________________________________________________
Jean Richardson led the webinar “Intro to Servant Leadership for the Flummoxed” last month. She will set the context for a discussion on this leadership model and encourage discussion among the attendees. Jean is the author of The Preservation of the Agile Heart, an advanced discussion of agile advocacy and where agile advocates need to go from here. Learn more at agileheartinfo.com.
We will meet at:
The Standard: 900 SW Fifth Ave, Portland, OR 97204
Broadway CR (Basement - signs will show the way)
Thanks to The Standard for providing space for this event
Note: PMI Certification holders can claim 1 PMI PDU for attending this event.

Portland Ruby Brigade - Monthly meeting
Roll back
| description |
We'll have pizza & beer starting at 6pm, so stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the presentations.
PRESENTATIONS 7pm-9pm
**Pragmatic Microservices**, by Randy Shoup, VPE @ Stitch Fix
If you are considering, or in the process of, moving to microservices, you probably want to come to this event. Randy Shoup, a 25-year tech veteran in Silicon Valley, will share his insights into whether and when an organization should consider migrating to microservices and how to do that successfully, referencing examples from Google, eBay, Stitch Fix, as well as many smaller organizations he has worked with.
THE TALK
One of the most powerful trends in software today is building large systems out of composable microservices. Many large-scale web companies have migrated over time to this architecture – and for good reason. But, as with any powerful technique, microservices come with their own brand of tradeoffs, and it is important to be aware of them before deciding whether they are appropriate in any particular case. They are not for every scale of problem, for every stage of company, or for every team.
This session takes a pragmatic approach to microservices, and compares them to the alternatives at different stages of company evolution. Using examples from Google, eBay, and Stitch Fix, as well as from smaller organizations, it makes practical suggestions about whether, when, and how an organization should consider adopting a microservices architecture. Assuming microservices are the appropriate choice, it outlines an experience-based, incremental approach to making a successful re-architecture to microservices.
---
**Dana Scheider** will speak about executive dysfunction, a set of cognitive/psychological conditions that affect the brain's planning and organization functions. These conditions affect a lot of neurodivergent folks and a lot of people who have them don't even know what they are. The talk discusses what executive dysfunction is and how to deal with these conditions as an affected individual or someone who has to work with one.
After presentations we'll have more socializing time. |

PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) Global Day of Code Retreat
Roll back
| description |
***Registration through Eventbrite (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-national-code-retreat-day-tickets-38483100991) is required to avoid having to manually check-in at the event ***
Come join us for the first anniversary of PDXWIT Coderetreat! Our first Coderetreat was on last year’s Global Day of Coderetreat, an event during which groups of coders the world over follow the sun and stay in communication via Twitter about their progress and learning throughout the day. If you have attended one of our Coderetreats in the past, please come back and help us celebrate.
If you are new to Coderetreats, know that Coderetreat.org is a self-organized, volunteer-led organization dedicated to enabling software developers to help each other improve their craft and teaming skills. Software developers of all sorts gather with their machines, IDEs and the ready-to-code Conway's Game of Life. A Coderetreat facilitator assists the developers during several 45-minute sessions throughout the day. Iman Bilal, Tracie Lee, and Jean Richardson will be teaming up to facilitate this Coderetreat. Tech Academy is donating space and providing breakfast and lunch for the event.
Come along for a day of codeplay in a supportive environment and help Coderetreat follow the sun during the global celebration of software development! If you were there in February, we look forward to seeing you again. If you missed that event, grab your laptop, your favorite IDE, and join us.
Agenda:
8:30 AM: Doors open
9:00 AM: Introduction and orientation
5:00 PM: Event ends
PDXWIT Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Trans and non-binary people are always welcome at our events. |

PDXWIT Presents IP Law for the Tech Industry
Roll back
| description |
Trademarks, patents, trade secrets and copyrights are important assets to any tech company. Whether you want to advance at your current job or start your own business, familiarity with intellectual property will help you succeed. Listen to Carla Quisenberry and Alicia Bell talk about the various types of intellectual property law, including how they can be distinguished by what they cover, how to get coverage, and how long the coverage lasts.
Agenda:<br>
5:00 : Arrive and mingle<br>
5:15 : Introduction of ourselves and short overview of the different types of IP.<br>
5:20 : More in-depth discussion of trademarks, patents, copyrights, and trade secrets—how to get coverage, what is covered, how long does coverage last—including issues specific to the tech field.<br>
6:30 : Q&A<br>
7:00 : Event Ends
Carla Quisenberry is an Intellectual property attorney at Miller Nash Graham & Dunn. As a woman who has been in a male dominated field for the past ten years, she has a great interest in advancing the careers of other women. Alicia Bell helps develop and implement intellectual property strategies that are consistent with clients’ business priorities and corporate culture. She assists clients with clearance, registration, licensing, and enforcement of their intellectual property assets, corporate transactions, and general business matters. Ali is the leader for the firm's Intellectual Property team. She also assists clients with issues related to their online presence, such as Digital Millennium Copyright Act compliance, domain name disputes, and development of website policies, including terms of use and privacy policies. She is a member of Oregon Women Lawyers and has also been recognized as an Oregon Rising Star℠ by Super Lawyers® from 2013-2016.

Good Data, Bad Info @DAMA PDX - November 16
Roll back
| description |
Join your fellow Portland area Lovers of Data for breakfast, networking, and a data talk by Michael Scofield from Loma Linda University; hosted by your local Portland DAMA chapter. We meet at in Downtown Portland at 8:30am for registration and networking with the presentation from 9 to 11:30am.
RSVP Required.
More Information and RSVP at: https://damapdx.wordpress.com/2017/10/05/november-2017-good-data-bad-info/
Free for members and employees of corporate members.
<br>
Students only $5 (to cover breakfast and speaker travel).
<h3>About "Good Data, Bad Info"</h3>
Producing decision-able information from lots of raw data often requires complex processes which must be carefully designed and architected.
<b>Mind the Gap:</b> This presentation looks at the gap between raw data and decision-able information. Most of the chatter about data quality focuses upon raw, granular data describing discrete events and entities inside the enterprise and around it. But for data warehouses and decision-support, data must be converted into useful information meaningful to the decision-maker.
<b>Raw or Derived? Trend and Pattern Examples:</b> We will also examine numerous examples between raw data and derived data (“information”) which show us trends, patterns, etc. Examples come from astronomy, military intelligence, and criminology. For example, in image analysis (in the intelligence community) we see a succession of “derived” data as we move from pixels to clues about the enemy’s strategic intent.
<b>The 9 MetaData Types - Which and Why:</b> As an enterprise is inundated with more data (raw, intermediate, and advanced information) the designing and population of good metadata becomes even more important. We will look at nine distinct kinds of metadata. Not all kinds are of equal importance, but we will show the value of each. The larger the organization, and the more diverse the “institutional memory”, the more important it is to properly document the data asset for broader exploitation of its value.
<b>Correct Conclusions? Handle with Care:</b> We will also look at how incorrect conclusions may be drawn because of mishandling of the process to derive “higher level” information from the raw data.

Agile PDX Westside: Overcoming a Culture of Fear: Improving Psychological Safety for Individuals and Teams
Roll back
| description |

Imagine coming to work every day where you're free to be your authentic self, you have open trust with all of your coworkers, and you can easily focus together, experiment, and create great value without regard to role or hierarchy. What if all individuals and teams got to experience this kind of open, creative, productive, inspiring workplace? We too often see that this is not the case for ourselves or our teams as we often lack Psychological Safety in our work environment.
So what are the culprits that cause this lack of safety? Is it miscommunication, politics, old management practices, or something else? Join us as we explore the challenges to Psychological Safety and learn from each other's experiences where Psychological Safety was at it's best and teams thrived. If you've been on either side of this Safety line, we invite you to share your experiences and what has helped your teams to open up or caused them to shut down.
Continuing with our theme of learning, the Westside cafe will discuss how we can create a culture where it is ok to probe deeply into our mistakes without fear.
Please join us Nov 17th for this discussion.
[Note: This session will be held at the McMenamins Cornelius Pass Roadhouse. Please ask the host at the front of the Imbrie Hall building for the AgilePDX group's location.] |

Operation Code Benefit & Dinner

The 2017 Operation Code Benefit Dinner & Auction will celebrate the tens of hundreds of life-changing educational and mentorship opportunities provided throughout the country and across the globe since 2014 while aspiring to deliver more next year.
Every day a new active military service member, citizen-soldier, veteran, spouse or military family member joins Operation Code for software mentorship, career guidance and assistance, for the lifelong friendships, tech conference and code school scholarships, and to be part of something bigger than themselves— an open source community comprised of passionate volunteer software developers and technology entrepreneurs all dedicated to helping the men and women who’ve served in uniform and their families get the technical skills necessary for the 21st century new skills economy. In too many cases, they face financial barriers and hardships to get started.
At Operation Code, we believe every service member, citizen-soldier, veteran and family member deserves exceptional technology training and mentorship. We believe that all who’ve worn the uniform and their families should fill the nation’s technical talent shortage.
That’s what drives each and every one of us: our global network of volunteer software developers, who donate tens of thousands of hours towards mentoring those who’ve served and their families, and our supporters who back us through employee-employer matching, in-kind contributions, and generous sponsorship.
On Friday, November 10, 2017, we will come together at the Sentinel Hotel’s Governor Ballroom to pause, reflect, toast and celebrate how far we’ve come. We will honor those who’ve served in uniform and how much they’ve learned through the communities generosity. With your support, we will continue to fund our education programs and seed our first scholarship endowment so we can go further, faster tomorrow. |

PDXWIT Presents Intro to Bitcoin, Blockchain, Cryptocurrency

| description |
Due to the popularity of a previous event in this format, we have taken steps to ensure additional seating capacity. That said, please plan to arrive early to ensure you have a spot as seating is limited.
<br>
Want to learn how Bitcoin and Ethereum work, how cryptography plays a key role in securing funds, or how a network of untrusted computers guessing random numbers quadrillions of times per second adds security to the blockchain? Join Scott Bigelow, Back-end Developer at Augur, in an introduction to the blockchain and some common blockchain-based applications. New technologies, such as the blockchain and Ethereum, can provide new opportunities in the startup-rich ecosystem of Portland. Additionally, understanding these revolutionary new design principles can help illuminate new ways of designing your own systems. No previous working knowledge of cryptography or other supporting technologies necessary, this will be a ground-up introduction.
