update Calagator::Event 1250468066 EAST Knowledge - Locating Intrusions Using Fiber Optics Roll back

description EAST Knowledge invites you to attend our fifth meeting! *All* are welcome! * **What:** Locating Intrusions Using Fiber Optics * **Who:** Jim Rulla * **Where:** The Story Room at the Gresham Library * **When:** 10:30am-Noon, Saturday, April 18, 2015 * **Why:** Sharing what we know Interferometers measure distances to within fractions of the wavelength of light. Put a couple of these incredibly sensitive devices on the fence around an airport, and you can not merely detect a would-be intruder — you can locate him. Put a pair on a pipeline, and you can not merely detect nearby digging that could damage the pipe — you can locate its source. You might even be able to detect — and perhaps even locate — leaks in the pipe. The detection and location mechanisms are fascinating examples of clever engineering. I'll explain how these patented systems work and illustrate new algorithms that improve performance. Join us as we make a loop around the pond and document plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist mobile app. We'll work together as a group, no experience needed. No phone required either as we should have plenty. We'll set out about 15 minutes after the start time so find us in the parking lot. SE 7th Ave & Sellwood Blvd RSVP [on eventbrite](https://www.eventbrite.com/e/inaturalist-oaks-bottom-wildlife-refuge-tickets-16435251279) Your hosts: Tim Welch and Matt Waddell What to bring: * iPhone or Android phone (if you have one) * Northwest plant ID book (if you have one). An excellent one for this location is "Plants of the Pacific Northwest Coast" * Suitable shoes/clothing (could be a little bit wet/muddy) * Snacks, water & drinks to share * A cup, plate, and spoon couldn't hurt either What to do before coming: * Create an account with iNaturalist - http://www.inaturalist.org/ * Install the iNaturalist mobile app on your phone * After opening the mobile app, search for and join the 'Dots Connect' project. create Calagator::Event 1250468164 Galois tech talk: From Haskell to Hardware via CCCs Roll back

description nil abstract: For the last several years, speed improvements in computing come mainly from increasing parallelism. Imperative programming, however, makes parallelization very difficult due to the many possible dependencies implied by effects. For decades, pure functional programming has held the promise of parallel execution while retaining the very simple semantics that enables practical, rigorous reasoning. This talk describes a prototype compiler from Haskell (not a library) to low-level hardware descriptions for massively parallel execution on reprogrammable logic devices. The compiler works by monomorphizing, miscellaneous other transformations, and conversion to the vocabulary of cartesian closed categories (CCCs), as captured in a small collection of Haskell type classes. One instance of those classes provides an interpretation as parallel circuits. I will show many examples of simple Haskell programs and corresponding compiler-generated circuits. bio: Conal Elliott has been working (and playing) in functional programming for more than 30 years. He especially enjoys applying semantic elegance and rigor to library design and optimized implementation. He invented the paradigm now known as “functional reactive programming” in the early 1990s, and then pioneered compilation techniques for high-performance, high-level embedded domain-specific languages, with applications including 2D and 3D computer graphics. The latter work included the first compilation of Haskell programs to GPU code, while maintaining precise and simple semantics and powerful composability, as well a high degree of optimization. Conal earned a BA in math with honors from the College of Creative Studies at UC Santa Barbara in 1982 and a PhD in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University in 1990. His latest position was at Tabula Inc, where he worked on chip specification and compiling Haskell to hardware for massively parallel execution until their closure in early 2015. Before Tabula, his positions included Architect at Sun Microsystems and Researcher in the Microsoft Research graphics group. He has also coached couples and led conscious relationship workshops together with his partner Holly Croydon, with whom he now lives on 20 acres in the woods in the California Gold Country. For publications, CV, professional blog, etc, see http://conal.net.

update Calagator::Event 1250467699 Portland Ruby Brigade monthly meeting Roll back

description We'll have pizza & beer starting at 6pm, so stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the presentations. # PRESENTATIONS at 7pm ### Mike Perham: Using Background Jobs with Sidekiq and Rails You know how to make a controller and view in Ruby on Rails. But what's a background job? How do I use them to make my website as fast as possible? This talk will introduce the notion of background jobs, why you might want to use them and show how to integrate Sidekiq with your Rails app to make background jobs easy! ### Lightning Talks Sign up at the meeting to give a 5-minute lightning talk. # After presentations we'll have more socializing time. # Thanks to New Relic for providing the venue and beer, pizza & snacks this month! # ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 29th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." You can get up by buzzing in with the intercom, and saying you're here for New Relic. Ride on up to the 29th floor, you'll easily find the bike parking. ABOUT THE GROUP: The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group welcomes all programmers interested in the language and its implementations, tools, libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the mailing list. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday" -- see you there! We'll have pizza & beer starting at 6pm, so stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the presentations. # PRESENTATIONS at 7pm ### Mike Perham: Using Background Jobs with Sidekiq and Rails You know how to make a controller and view in Ruby on Rails.
